My wife & I love to ski. We live and work in Portland Oregon, but love Sun Valley and the Wood River Valley. Good friends recommended the Sun Valley Ski School as one of the best in the nation and we took our first lessons on Baldy in the mid 70's. The 300 days of sunshine, the snowmaking, the grooming and the improvements made by Earl Holding, have made it our favorite winter resort. The groomed corduroy with an inch of 'cheater snow' make everyone a wonderful skier, you just can't make a mistake! But as the saying goes people come to Sun Valley for the Winters but stay because of the Summers. As good as Sun Valley is in the Winter, it is even better in the Summer.

Jim Pittman purchased this house in 1979

With a name like 'The Red Neck Retreat' you know there has to be a story and there is! After way too many drinks on a ski trip to Park City in the 70's we decided we could do our own version of a 'time share.' We took a vote and Sun Valley was everybody's favorite. When we sobered up the next day it still seemed like a good idea. So 5 guys formed a partnership in 1979 with a mandatory Buy/Sell in the event of death, disability or divorce and came up with the name 'The Red Neck Retreat,' after the Jerry Jeff Walker song 'Up Against the Wall Red Neck Mother.' There is a ski sign over the garage with double black diamonds that says 'Hardcore.'

Hardcore is what we call the boys 3 day ski trip in January that has being going on since the mid 60's. It still only has two rules: One, no matter what you do the night before you are on the lift at 9 am. Two, you ski the last run of the day from top to bottom and the last guy down buys the first round of beer.

My last remaining partner died on the chairlift in Feb. 2012. He skied the bowls all day in a foot of new snow, had lunch at Seattle Ridge and died of a heart attack on the Cold Springs lift heading home. Not a bad way to go, but way too young at age 69. As a result we have decided to expand the rental beyond the handful of friends who go every year.

We choose the house out North of town because it is out of the hustle and bustle of downtown Kethum, yet only 15 minuets from the Warm Springs and 11 minuets to the River Run lifts in the Winter. It also catches the afternoon sun.

With an easement to the Big Wood River we enjoy some of the best fly fishing in the Wood River Valley. Only a few locals know of the access to the river from our neighborhood. In the Summer when the town is packed with tourists, you are not affected. You are just 2 miles to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, the Harriman trails for Cross Country Skiing in the Winter and Mt. Biking and Hiking in the Summer. Galena Lodge is just 17 miles North and Red Fish Lake Stanley 33 miles from there.

During the Winter we drive 11 minuets to the River Run Lodge and ride the Gondolla, to the Round House, to begin our day.

We brought a bunch of teens that are on a competitive snow sports team and this house worked really well for us. We had more then enough beds, and bathrooms and the living room was nice and large. Kitchen was a great size for making meals for everyone and then the table where we all could eat. Having that huge fire place was also really enjoyable.

Comfortable house, great location

I am the coach of a small high-school Nordic team and we recently stayed in this house while attending the Boulder Mountain Tour. The location, a few miles from the race and close to Ketchum, was ideal for us. The house accommodated us quite well, with enough bedrooms for multiple sets of parents and a bunk room for kids. The common areas were spacious and spread out enough so that everyone felt comfortable. The large dining room table was nice for dining and a bunch of kids playing Monopoly! The glass-enclosed walk-around fireplace was spectacular and really added to a cozy and luxurious ambiance. Lovely art on the walls and fresh flowers were a special touch.

Having three full bathrooms made it much easier for a large group to stay here. And the water stayed hot through multiple showers! And we were able to use the spacious garage to wax skis in before the race.

Add to all this the plush towels, linens, and robes and this made for a lovely stay.

We are so pleased with this house that if we have the same sized group next year, this will be our first choice of houses to rent!

Redneck Retreat is just wonderful in every respect. Our family loved this home. The bedrooms and baths are very comfortable (complete with terrycloth bathrobes) and it was nice having three bedrooms up and one down near the kitchen. The living room/dining room is just huge and the large fireplace is located in the middle of the room. There is seating at the dining room tables for an entire extended family and there are little spaces throughout the room to be slightly separated for private time. The ceiling is high and the windows are numerous so there is so much light that it is a very happy home. The kitchen is well stocked and well located in the home. There is a wonderful entry hall with heater off the large garage for wet coats, gloves and boots. The home is located in a beautiful area among the trees on a little lane. The backyard and hot tub were enjoyed by all. The owners are so accomodating that is was a true pleasure to rent this home. We hope to return very soon.

Red Neck Resort!

The house was wonderful with the big fire place and the cabin look inside! We loved the forest in the back yard with lots of trees! It looked like a post card picture, and we were in it!!! A GREAT place to take afternoon walks, go jogging, bike riding, & take hikes! We loved every minute we spent there! The house has everything you need- towels, bedding, pots, pans, anything & everything needed to cook with! It is very relaxing, very big, & so very clean & organized. There is no cramping here! If you decide to stay here since this is the best place within miles of the lodge & downtown, be sure to treat it as your own, because I feel like it is my own! I will be back! This is no "Red Neck Retreat", it is a RED NECK RESORT, with a hot tub & all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry, I just renamed your place :)

Ski Club Stay at Redneck Retreat

The Retreat was perfect for our team. The spacious living / dining room had enough nooks and separate tables for study, games, visiting and snacking that multiple activities went on at once. The long dining table comfortably sat the whole team to pleasant sit-down meals and doubled as an effective prep space. Afternoon sun on the deck, and the hot tub were enjoyed by all. The Retreat is a bit out of town and in a quiet residential neighborhood so there is a peaceful, lazy atmosphere about it. It is also very close to some of the best hiking trails in the valley, and only a few hundred yards from the Big Wood River and great fishing. The owners were exceptionally easy to work with and we certainly would sign up to use the property again!
