Issigeac Barn Rental Photos and Description

High quality, comfortable, detached cottage. 3 bedrooms 3 bathrooms. Free WiFi.

This is our special house for friends and family. It is light and airy, spacious, comfortable and cosy. It retains its original features, old beams and thick stone walls, but with modern double glazing, underfloor heating and a fitted kitchen. There are antiques and original prints and paintings. The sejour with dining area is spacious with comfortable sofas and chairs, a large farmhouse table and dresser and there is a wood burning stove. We have books, magazines, board games and sky TV.

The two upstairs bedrooms (1 king, 1 double), have en suite facilities and the twin bedroom downstairs has a shower room nearby.

We provide all linen (changed weekly) plus poolside towels, free heating, some logs for the fire, and a welcome pack of your choosing.

Lighting and heating are free and we leave everything that you might need at the start of your holiday.

Outside, there is a covered terrace at the front of the house with oak pillars and young vines and from here, a path leads to the swimming pool.

The 9m by 5m heated pool (Roman steps) is new and is well screened both from our house and from the neighbours. There is an electrically controlled, solid safety cover conforming to French legal standards; in addition, this retains the heat overnight; with this and the heating, we ensure that the water is always comfortable for you.

The pool terrace is large and sunny and south facing, and there are six comfortable loungers. There are four parasols, six drinks tables and swimming towels are provided free.

The pool, terrace area and garden are checked and cleaned or tidied daily around 8 am, before you are up, so that we don't disturb you.

The pool and terrace will be entirely private and for your sole use whenever you want to use it. We, the owners, will use it rarely in order to clean it and do extra gardening, if you are out for a prolonged period, but we shall never be there while you want to swim or sunbathe.

Newly built for 2011, we have had an ironwork gazebo made, where you can sit near to the pool in the evening sun for your aperitifs. This is shaded by a cover, wisteria and a vine. Nearby is a built in, covered, charcoal barbecue and some pots of culinary herbs.

For the more energetic, you are most welcome to use our lawn for football or badminton, and you can go on several walks or bike rides directly from our house.

There are lovely views across our neighbours arable farmland and woods. Please note that due to a nearby lake, we cannot accept young children.

The immediate area: We are only 5 Kms from a lovely, medieval village. Issigeac has a very popular Sunday morning market where you can stock up on all the food you could wish for. in the summer, we are overwhelmed by melons, strawberries, peaches, all sorts of plums, duck, wine, pates, wonderful cheeses, numerous types of loaves, and later in the year we feast on pumpkins, grapes and walnuts. Also there are plenty of food shops including two good butchers, two little supermarkets and three boulangeries. We have several good restaurants and a pizzeria. There are some very tempting small shops and can buy French things for the home, clothes, jewellery, paintings, hand blown glass, pottery, textile wall art, flowers and garden ornaments, just to mention a few. In addition, on Sunday, there are loads of stalls selling gifts of all sorts.

It is well worth visiting Issigeac on a quiet weekday, when you can really appreciate the medieval buildings, visit the shops when they are calmer and have a coffee in one of the many small cafes.

We have a GPs surgery, a dentist and two pharmacies and there are people who will help you by speaking English.

Since Issigeac sells anything that you might need and for the bigger items, large supermarkets are only twenty minutes away in Bergerac or Beaumont, you don't have to travel far afield. Bergerac has a picturesque port on the Dordogne, a cathedral and there is a charming vielle ville with shops, a covered market and many restaurants and cafes.

We live next door and are very happy to help you with advice for planning your holiday. We can book outings for you in the area.....for canoeing on the Dordogne, visits to caves, wine tasting venues, and restaurant outings.

Further afield there is lots to do in the Dordogne, for all age groups; to help you enjoy it, we have two books, one of our recommendations and one written by our previous visitors, with some really good descriptions of what they enjoyed. There are also loads of brochures. If there is something that we don't describe, we can help you find it. Also there is a very friendly tourist office in Issigeac and a bigger one in Bergerac.

The walks locally are easy and scenic and the roads are not too hilly and ideal for cycling. We can arrange to book tennis courts for you in Issigeac, horse riding can be had locally: canoeing on the Dordogne, either white water or calm water, is a must. You could take a river boat down the Dordogne in Bergerac or Beynac or there is go karting for the boys.

For short or all day visits, there are numerous ancient towns or villages, wine tasting, caves with prehistoric paintings or vast caves and fascinating tunnels, gardens to visit, chateaux, markets, night meals in village squares and coffees on sunny terraces. We are close to several bastide towns which come alive on their market days and we keep a list of when to visit each one.

Further away, there is the coast and Bordeaux, and to the east, Beynac with its perched chateau and of course, lovely Sarlat. St Emilion is great for a day out and for buying wine. A train links all these and you have wonderful views along the Dordogne.

You will be spoilt for choice!

And finally, Aquitaine is famed for its food and we have plenty of very good and well priced restaurants close to us.

However, if you just want to relax and unwind, you will be left in peace to enjoy the heated pool.

This is our third year of letting and we are delighted that we now feature in Alistair Sawday's website as a Special Self Catering property. We have previously let a second home in Provence and so have experience of holiday lettings. In order to continue attracting holiday makers, we are still marketing this lovely property at very competitive rates, given that the dairy has been refurbished to a very high standard and the cost of the holiday is all inclusive from May to the end of September. There will be no further costs once you have paid for your holiday.

Why Felicity Stamp chose Issigeac

John and I spent a long time searching for a region in which to settle in France. Bergerac and the Dordogne river, even in winter, held a special attraction for us. We think that Issigeac is a charming ancient village with a great welcome from the local French and we chose to live in this area all year round, a decision which we do not regret. Our house is medieval, like Issigeac, and we bought it with a barn next door. We loved the barn when it was totally unrestored and it has exceeded all our expectations now that it is renovated. It has retained many of its old features which give it character, but the inside is fresh and unobtrusively modern. We have named it after the ancient old horse plough that we found in the building.

What makes this barn unique

What we now offer is a stone cottage that has been renovated to a very high standard and that we hope, gives you all the luxury and comforts that you have in your own home. In addition, we have a heated pool set in a small garden with plenty of terrace space and shady areas for outdoor meals.

We also hope to enthuse you with all that there is to do and see in our lovely area of the Dordogne. Come and see for yourselves!

Beautiful, relaxing.

We spent a wonderful 3 weeks at La Charrue. It was the most beautiful and clean property we have ever stayed in. It has been fully furnished to a high specification, with great attention to detail. The pool was always a perfect temperature, and well maintained. Most of the work in the garden and pool were done before we even got up! John and Felicity are fabulous hosts, are very in tune with their guests, and are always there if needed. They quickly ascertained what activities we might enjoy, and made all the necessary bookings.

The countryside around the villa is lovely, as well as the surrounding villages. Most mornings we went to nearby Beaumont for coffee, which was especially interesting on market day.

We spent a wonderful morning in a nearby organic vineyard for a tour, followed by lunch.

We also went canoeing, which was very enjoyable, and was the highlight of the holiday for our two teenage sons.

The restaurant that Felicity and John recommended was the best we had gone to in France for many years, in that price bracket. We went there numerous times.

We would thoroughly recommend this villa for a great holiday. We hope to stay there again ourselves.

Our second visit to Lacharrue. The Gite was just as perfect as before but with the added advantage of sunny days. This is a most idyllic property, absolutely spotless with everything you need for a perfect holiday and set in a beautiful, peaceful location. There are plenty of places to visit but on this trip we spent most of the time around the pool. Thank you Felicity and John for making us so welcome.

Nigel and Marina Jerome, West Sussex.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for this lovely review. We were so glad that this time you were able to enjoy the pool and the swimming and we were delighted that the sun shone for you despite what was forecast! Thank you too for taking such good care of our cottage: we do so appreciate that. Best wishes, Felicity and John.

Perfect place for a relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

Thank you very much for allowing us to stay in your lovely gite and enjoy your hospitality.

The gite is in a perfect "get away from it all" location just below Bergerac and just outside of Issigeac; peace and quiet when you want it and not far away from the lovely local towns when you want something to do/see. Things to do include paddling a canoe/kayak on the river Dordogne - very peaceful way to take in the views; horse riding/trekking and most importantly visiting the evening markets to sample the local food and hospitality.

Fe and John were the perfect hosts; never far away if you needed anything or were looking for advice on where to go and what to see.

The quality and standard of the accommodation is excellent; I cannot think of anything that was missing or would have made a difference to our stay. There are all the usual kitchen facilities and even a TV with English channels if you really really really can't find anything else to do.

A big thumbs up from the whole family and looking forward to another visit sometime.

A perfect peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

Our first holiday in the Dordogne proved very successful. We visited a number of local villages and found them to be unspoilt, interesting and very welcoming. The lacharrue gite was the best rental accommodation we have ever found and the high standards of quality and cleanliness coupled with lots of space made our stay just perfect. We were unable to make good use of the lovely pool as the weather was a little indifferent but the hosts, Felicity and John made us feel very welcome and we have already made our reservation for June 2014.

Owner's Response: We are always very pleased when visitors enjoy being in our holiday cottage, and even happier when they take the time and make the effort to post a review for us. It is most kind of you both, thank you and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

Gorgeous cottage in stunning location

La Charrue is a very well appointed holiday home set in the countryside just 5 minutes from the beautiful medieval village of Issigeac.

We stayed there for 2 weeks in July 2013 and did not want to leave as we were so comfortable. It was as though we were in our own home. Everything one could need to make for a comfortable holiday is there. The decor and furnishings are charming and very light and airy. There are 3 places to eat; two being outside and also a large dining table inside that can accommodate 8 easily.

There are three pretty bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, the master being very spacious, light and airy and having a large bathroom.

The swimming pool with umbrellas and comfortable sun loungers were in constant use the whole time we were there (it was very hot every day). John and Felicity kept the pool in top condition and were very discrete doing this early in the morning.

The kitchen is great, with lots of equipment, a dishwasher and a full stove top and oven. We found everything we needed was there and as we all loved cooking, were happy to find all the things we required to make some marvellous meals. There was a very good charcoal barbecue outside next to a comfortable vine covered eating area.

Felicity and John were wonderful hosts. They speak French and have an intimate knowledge of the area. They booked restaurants for us and made several good recommendations to us.

We would definitely return to La Charue and can recommend this lovely house to anyone wanting a holiday in a beautiful area in the Dordogne.

Perfect, Beautiful Gite

  • 5 of 5

The Gite is ideally situated, immaculately clean and furnished to a very high standard. Bergerac airport which is only a 15min drive from the property is very useful. A delightful heated pool and first class barbecue. The small hamlets and villages with there chateaux, churches and medieval buildings were a delight to visit. We specially enjoyed the Sunday market at the nearby Issigeac with its fresh food, cheeses, hams etc. The owners Felicity and John were welcoming, friendly and very helpful. It was a joy to stay here and we will certainly return.

We live in a little hamlet situated in rolling farmland, with abundant wildlife...deer, hares, red squirrels and plenty of birds. Only 5 Kms away is the lovely medieval village of Issigeac with restaurants, all facilities (butchers, bakers, PO, pharmacies, Dr) and a bustling Sunday market where you can buy all the local delicacies.

From our gite you can visit eastwards up the Dordogne for canoeing or seeing the numerous castles perched on rocks, west for the wine towns, south for the bastide villages, or north for Bergerac (the old town or the supermarkets). Further north and east, the ancient caves and prehistoric paintings are well worth a visit. For all the above, we can supply suggestions and recommendations. Or, of course, you can just laze by our luxury heated pool, unwind and relax.

If you are coming by train, there is an excellent TGV to Libourne, or if you are flying, Bergerac airport is only 15min away on country roads so your holiday starts as soon as you leave the plane.

Golf: There are three very good golf courses within easy reach of us and details have been left in the gite.
