Hang loose in our comfortably appointed Kawaihae Village beach cottage. Turn key Kama'aina home in close proximity to high-end hotels and resorts. Island style decor outfitted for Hawaiian adventure. Enjoy the private yard, barbeque, and outdoor shower with spectacular whale watching and sunset views of the Kohala Coast. An adventurous alternative to the resort experience.
For our second trip to the Big Island, we wanted to stay on the Kohala Coast but not at one of the resorts. We thought our options would be limited and that we would have to sacrifice quality of accommodations. We were wrong. This cottage was ideal for our family. There was yard space overlooking the coast with a bbq grill. There was an outdoor shower to wash away the sand. There was laundry, ample bedroom space, cozy lanai, easy parking space, and close proximity to wonderful beaches. There were also beach toys, boogie boards, snorkeling gear, towels, and wifi! In short, we had everything we needed and more. Also, when we arrived the property was in immaculate shape. I do not have enough good things to say.
This is like the movie you saw and loved but that no one else ever heard of it. It's an outstanding value, not because you should pay more for it, but because of the proximity to all other fancy resorts that you would otherwise pay too much for, and because of all the amenities provided. Save your money and go to Mauna Kea Beach Hotel to enjoy the same beach through public access, sunset drinks at their Kaunao'a beach bar, then come home and barbecue some freshly caught fish from Eddy La'au's Fish market nearby. There is a bit of road noise, but for me it is easy to overlook given all of the other benefits.
We were lucky to have found this cottage at VRBO. Location is superb. Literally, only a few minutes away from Hapuna beach. The owner also pointed us to other local attractions which we would not know about. The house itself was beautifully furnished, equipped with everything we needed from doing laundry, cooking, and gear needed for a day out at the beach. Couldn't ask for more. We especially loved the outdoor shower and bonus room in the back of the house. Every morning, my father would wake up before everyone else, sit in the sun-filled room and read his news off his iPad while enjoying the fresh air from the ocean. It's an ocean view Internet cafe. :)
We were glad to find this rental in VRBO - it fit into our travel plans very well and would definitely stay here again if given the same opportunity.
The supplied amenities were great for a comfortable stay. The pictures do not show it, but there are individual air conditioning units in each of the bedrooms which helps with having quiet and comfortable night's rest after a busy day at the beach or trails. We were literally minutes away from well-known beaches such as Kauna'oa Beach (Mauna Kea) and Hapuna. And the outdoor showers were fantastic after a hot day.
The owner was really helpful -- getting us a beach umbrella when we asked for it. Also, we accidentally locked ourselves out but again, he took care of everything to ensure our plans were not affected.
Couple of nitpicks: the location overlooks a highway, so there is some traffic noise, though you get a fantastic view to the West (sunsets). The noise was not bad, and was able to open the windows when we were inside (the breeze through the property was nice) and not be bothered by traffic. Also, sometimes it was difficult to keep the main (indoor) bathroom floor dry after a shower; may be just some water getting around the curtain.
Overall, we recommend this property -- we have stayed in 3 other vacation rentals on the Big Island and this one was our favourite.
Minutes from some of the big islands best beaches, surf spots, snorkeling, fishing grounds, Resorts, golf courses, and one of the most significant historical sites in Hawaii (Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site). Overlooking the route of the world famous Ironman Triathlon.
