We had a not so pleasant experience with Christine. She was rude and tried to talk us out of staying in the apartment an hour after I confirmed by email. She said she double booked and wanted us to stay somewhere else. We insisted we stay and then discovered 84 steps to the apartment after reaching the top of the funicular. Christine's room is in the same apartment and she walks in whenever she wants. After 9:00 at night there is absolutely no one else in the fortress and it feels kind of strange.
The castle is a fantastic place to stay in Salzburg. We spent 4 nights here & thoroughly enjoyed it although we had to do the steep walk up twice - once by design & once by mistake - the last car UP is 9pm (Down is 10pm). Christine couldn't have been more helpful & negotiated our week Festungbahn passes which were 12 euro per adult & 5.50 for the children (14 & 12) & well worth the investment.
Worth noting is that the entrance to Christine's apartment is within the 2 bed apartment but it was not a problem for us although I cannot say the same for Christine!!!
Highly recommend a unique & memorable experience
This place was fabulous and unique experience. Ms. Christine, the proprietor, was fabulous, as well. Thank you. How cool to stay in the fortress above Salzburg. Kids (9 and 12) had a blast. Can't wait to return in the future. Great views from the fortress.
Unique expérience, staying in an apartment actually inside the fortress! I went with my husband and young children and we loved it. The apartment was modern, the owner Christine was lovely and even produced a huge Christmas tree, decorations and gifts for us. It was fun getting to it by funicular railway and even on the one occasion we had to walk up one evening, it was still fun as we got to use the keys to the castle to open the main gate!
The fortress is over 900 years old and you can view inside, there are lots of interesting artefacts. Our children loved being there. What a unique experience ! Highly recommend it.
I stayed in the two bedroom apartment with two of my friends for 3 nights. We had a fantastic time staying in the castle apartment. However, I would like to point out that to get up and down from the apartment to the town you have to take the tram costing 12 euros p/w unlimited travel. The last tram to come down from the castle is 9pm and to go up is 8pm. After that, one must hike up to the castle! We were not aware of this until we arrived. The path is well lit but fairly steep. Overall, I would recommend for others to stay in this apartment as it was clean, nicely decorated and staying in the castle is a very unique experience! Thank you Christine!
Yes, this apartment is in the fortress. Excellent customer service. 2 Adults and 2 pre-teen kids fit comfortably. Clean and very light. We would recommend this room for a future stay. Be prepared to buy a Festung ticket.
I recommend parking in the Hypo-Garage if you can get into it - we found it easy to find and cheaper than other lots.
Great food at Paul-Stube and other Rick Steve's "Best of Europe" restaurant recommendations. We found his recommendations spot on, especially eating at the University cafe. Michelin Guide also has a good walking tour. Old town is relatively small and easy to learn.
We did the Sound of Music sights on our own. It was much more fun finding the locations instead of having to follow a tour.
Catacombs were a let-down. Stiffskellar was expensive so we only had coffee and dessert.
So far, Salzburg is my favorite European city.
Salzburg, one of the most beautiful towns in Europe has to offer a variety of sights and cultural events in every season during the year. Idyllic Christmas markets during winter time or the famous places of Sound of Music and the music festival at summer time. We help you with the organization to the most beautiful sights in and around Salzburg to make your stay as exciting as possible.
