“THE COQUI KAI COTTAGE”

Welcome and enjoy our Island Cottage in the centrally located 2 bedroom tropical retreat 'THE COQUI (Ko-Key) KAI COTTAGE' the perfect place to see the beautiful east side of the island and hear the small Coqui Tree Frogs sing you to sleep at night!

The cottage was built in 2006, and it’s very well maintained and refreshed at least yearly with preventive maintenance on anything that needs attention (including the appliances). We completely refurnished, painted and updated the cottage, with a tropical decor at the end of 2012 including bringing a little of the outside in with a huge hollowed out tree stump dining table. We wanted to give you the feeling of your Tropical Hawaiian Vacation while you are indoors or outdoors! There is also a very large (500 sq. ft.) screened in Lanai (patio) so that you can enjoy patio dining or playing cards, or board games - rain or shine- while looking out at the tropical flowers, and a garden view of the outdoors, with sometimes Bananas, Papayas, Pineapple, and Guava!

This is a private home with 2 bedrooms + 1 bath -The Master BR has a California King, an Armoire and closet for your clothes, and a 32 in. TV/DVD. The 2nd bedroom has a Queen size bed, a dresser and closet for your clothes.

In the open floor plan Kitchen, living and dining rooms, there is a Queen size Hide-a-Bed for our little Keiki's guests. There is a 47 in. Samsung Smart TV with Blu-Ray DVD so that you can stream your music, pictures, and Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, etc. We have Hi-Speed Satellite Internet and WiFi so that you can keep in contact with family and friends.

The Kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, cooking and baking dishes, microwave, crock pot, rice cooker, coffee maker, and also a Keurig Coffee Maker (with complimentary Kuerig Hawaiian coffee and goodies at your arrival), Toaster, Blender, etc. Full size refrigerator and bottled water dispenser.

In the enclosed Lanai there is a washer and dryer with laundry soap provided There are also some children’s beach toys, boogie boards, flash lights for exploring lava tubes, umbrellas, and a cooler to take with you for your day trips.

We are 20 minutes from Hilo Airport and Hilo Town

Here are a few of our favorites things to see and do and distance from the Cottage:

Volcano National Park- See the Kilauea Crater, explore the many miles of hiking trails, lava tubes, Visitor Center, Guided Nature walks with park ranger, Museum, and our most favorites are hiking through a rainforest to the floor of a dormant volcano crater and then returning at night to view the glow of the crater, it’s amazing! - (25 mins)

Kopoho Tide Pools and Wai’opae Marine Sanctuary- Some of the best snorkeling in huge pools filled with coral and amazing fish on the east side of the island. (25 mins)

Ahalanui Park and Warm Ponds- A beautiful and free naturally heated thermal pond with water up to 90 degrees depending on the tide. Just down the street from the Kopoho tidepools. (25 mins)

Whale Watching- (Seasonal) see the Humpback Whales migrating Nov-Mar. right from the shore- (10 mins)

Relax and take a Beautiful scenic drive through the lush green side and stop at one of the many magnificent waterfalls.

Rainbow Falls- (15-20 mins)

Akaka Falls and Nature walk- (25 mins)

Botanical Gardens- (20 mins)

Kaumana Caves Lava Tube- Explore a 23 mile long (the whole length is not accessible, but there’s plenty to explore and enjoy) lava tube in it’s natural state, and see the amazing way the island was formed. (20 mins)

Mauna Kea- Watch the sunset or sunrise and see what the island looks like from above the clouds at 10,000 ft. elevation and for those who love the stars there’s World Class Star Gazing with Narrated free tours, as the different planets rise. (1 hr drive)

Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory and Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo- It's the ONLY natural tropical rainforest zoo in the U.S. and it's free! AND it’s is less than 10 minutes away.

Visit Black Sand Beaches almost guaranteed to see a few Turtles sun bathing.

Don't forget the culture of 'Old Hawaii'--- in Pahoa Village visit the old wooden boardwalk and dine at quaint restaurants & feel like you've stepped back in time; or stroll through downtown Hilo Town learn about the history and tradition of Hawaiian Culture through live shows, storytelling, music, film, and Hula by visiting the Historic Palace Theatre since 1925, the Tsunami Museum, Art Galleries, local Farmer's Market with organic fruits and veggie's, and don't forget the Shave Ice! So many things to do for every type of traveler.

We provide our recommendations of places to eat, shop, Day Trip's and Activity Brochures, car rental companies, timing your vacation, and helping to personalize your vacation to your families lifestyle. We are here to help you plan more than just where you’ll sleep, so you can take the time to relax and decide how you will enjoy this wonderful place.

About Shauna Knutsen

We would like to introduce ourselves to you, our guests. We are John and Shauna Knutsen, and we have two children Cindy and Zane.

We fell in love with Hawaii when we got married on Kauai, and have been coming back every since. There is no other place to us like Hawaii, its not just the beauty you see with your eyes, its the beauty of the humble people, the culture and the slowed down island time feel that allows you to truly relax and take the time to enjoy creation.

We love to bring our family and friends to enjoy this wonderful place, and even though all of Hawaii has so much to offer we decided on the Big Island- since it is so large and there is so much variety and so many climates- What other island can you be in a rain forest, an arid desert, an active volcano, on top of the tallest mountain from the sea floor (snow covered in winter), all on the SAME DAY! And even though all the islands are beautiful we feel that this island has some of the Best of the Best right here!

Shauna Knutsen purchased this house in 2012

Why Shauna Knutsen chose Hilo

We chose this area since we love the beauty, the tropical rain at night, the Coqui frogs singing, and the area is centrally located to our favorite places! And we love the easy going friendly laid back atmosphere.

What makes this house unique

This house having the private and separate cottage that our Gardener stays in. it allows our guests their privacy while being close enough to take care of things and be there in case we need him for our guests, puts our mind at ease.

We also like the quiet, country feeling so that when you get up and look outside you see nature, you hear the birds, and not the hustle of the city.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Making this charming place available for world weary travelers was a kind and generous thing to do! Thank you for the clean sheets, nice towels, the complete instruction tips on what and where. You will find everything needed here and the best coffee beans this side of anywhere!

The cottage caretaker (Rich) has a good natured presence. I've told all my friends about you and Coqui Cottage. Don't be surprised if some of them beats a path to your door!

All I can is is WOW, AWESOME!

This home was awesome, we will most likely stay here again. There was everything there that we needed except a rice cup and rice spoon. I will be sending that in the mail for the Coqui Cottage. Our babies loved it, lots of space, gave the care taker in front some of the home cooking that we did and he enjoyed it. Will let friends know about this home if they will be traveling to the Big Island of Hawaii.

We had a wonderful time in hilo and were very comfortable in this lovely home. We had a two year old with us and she had a blast. Owners have thought of everything and have all kinds of outdoor gear you can use as well as detailed day trip info on local sites. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Coqui Cottage

This home away from home was a wonderful place for us to stay. Every amenity was provided, and then some. The guide book provided by the owners was invaluable, with countless suggestions on local attractions and exact directions to each location. You do need a car, because this place is off the beaten path. Snorkeling in the tide pools was one of our favorite vacation activities EVER! All the gear is provided. We loved the local farmer's markets, cooking at home and being able to do laundry during our extended Hawaii vacation. The owners and caretaker were very professional, friendly and accommodating. If we return to the area, we would stay here again.

From our first contact with the owner to our arrival at the lovely cottage to our departure everything was wonderful! There are so many thoughtful details and amenities that it truly makes you feel at home! Everything is lovingly kept, well maintained and very clean. Lots of nice little "extras" - pretty much everything g you could think of! Plus there are binders of personalized and valuable information about things of interest nearby with trail and hiking guides, activity brochures not to mention detailed and very helpful emails from the owner! We have worked in tourism and have travelled quite extensively and definitely recommend this location to anyone - we are sure to be back!

Cozy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Cozy cottage, that is in a great location. Short drive from town, central to attractions we wanted to see and do. Frogs are very vocal, felt like we were in a rainforest, with evening showers. Cottage is clean and spacious. Shauna is awesome to deal with, gave us so much helpful information. She writes detailed emails and also has binders at the cottage. Beach gear to flashlights to explore caves. We stayed 5 nights and were very busy, days exploring all the areas she told us about. Thanks Shauna.
