About Nora Crouch
We live in Virginia Beach, Va. We are home remodelers and keep very busy in this industry. We love the water and the serenity of nature. Our home overlooks a beautiful reservoir where wildlife abounds. Our retirement dream was to find a home like ours here in Virginia but smaller and on the inter-coastal waterway.
Nora Crouch purchased this house in 2012
Why Nora Crouch chose Edenton
My husband and I discovered Holiday Island while on a trip in 2012. We fell in love with the view from the home and its location midway between two wonderful towns---Edenton and Elizabeth City. We were able to purchase the house and begin the process of creating our retirement paradise. Along the way, our friends have been so interested in our project; they asked if they could rent it out for a weekend or week. We decided to make it available year round. Holiday Island is not a 'touristy destination'. It is just a wonderful area to relax, take a walk or just sip coffee (or wine). A 65 foot long pier has been built with a 16x24 platform at the end, We are adding an additional 100 feet of pier this year providing even more dazzling views, fishing and a wonderful time on the largest freshwater sound in the country at 55 miles long. We just recently acquired the lot right next door to the house which now provides an additional 81 feet of soundfront privacy. The pier is located inside of a cove. The water is 8-24 inches deep at the bulkhead and a couple of inches deeper at the end of the pier. At the edge of the cove the water is 5 feet deep, once outside of the cove it goes to 15-20 feet deep. The bottom of the cove is sandy with some sea grass. It is a great place to launch kayaks that are provided, or let the children play. The small beach is great for the children to build sand castles and they can hunt for treasures in the water. The newly acquired adjacent lot has added an 85 foot beach, horse shoe pits and a second pergola to relax under while adding a place for yard games and enjoyment.
What makes this house unique
Once you leave the island, the town of Hertford about 15 minutes away, which was chartered in 1758 making it the seventh oldest town on North Carolina. It is a lovely historic town with a pharmacy and a soda fountain counter. There is an art gallery and delightful lunch spots right on the main street.
The Albemarle Plantation is next door to Holiday Island. The public is welcome to dine in their fabulous clubhouse and grill. The food is super and we always feel welcome there! More information about restaurants and activities are available in the welcome package.
In this area, history abounds with Edenton established in November 6, 1712 and Elizabeth City in 1793. The Outer Banks, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and many other towns are an hour to an hour and half away. You can take a day trip to visit the ocean and avoid the traffic inconvenience and high cost of staying there. Of course, the fishing is great here and boating makes the area even more enjoyable. There are four kayaks on the property. You can rent additional boats from Hertford or order one from Nags Head to be delivered to the marina. You can bring your own boat and launch fro the boat ramp on the island. The pier has approximately 20 inch water level in the summer and you can tie up your boat or PWC there.
