This was our second stay at Mike's house and apartment on Gaulding Cay Beach and it will not be our last. If you're looking for a quiet and tranquil getaway on a pristine beach with crystal clear water, than this is the place. Mike arranged for Wallace to pick us up at the airport, we stopped off at the grocery store and to pick up a few Kalik beer before arriving at the apartment. If you like exploring, you can rent a car, or have Wallace look after your transportation needs. There is plenty to see on North Eleuthera, but we also recommend a short water taxi ride to Harbour Island or Spanish Wells to spend the day. In both locations, a golf cart is the best means of transportation. Governor's Harbour is also a great field trip.
Mike is a fantastic host that will give you your privacy and he is always available for advice and ideas or to assist you. If your idea of a vacation or getaway is low key, with a beautiful beach, then Mike's house is for you. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer.
Thanks Mike for your hospitality,

My daughter and I could not have chosen a better location. Mike's place was so comfortable and inviting. We walked out the door and were in the beautiful turquoise water in just a few steps. Beautiful location and accommodation.

This cozy little cottage on Gaulding Cay Beach was absolutely perfect for the quiet and relaxing vacation I was looking for. From the moment our driver Julian picked us up at the airport, to the moment he returned us to the airport, our vacation was fabulous. Mike's spot on this beach is simply ideal. The crystal clear water was very calm, and great for swimming, with lots of sand bars at low tide. The color of the water was simply gorgeous, various hues of turquoise that always changed.
The apt. was immaculate and just as described. Its location on the beach was prime, walking just a few feet out the door to the water and chaise lounges. Mike was so very helpful and accommodating, and his friend Sandy as well. He arranged for us to hire a driver he knew, to take us on day trips. Julian, being a native of Eleuthera, was very knowledgable of the island.
I would highly recommend taking a day trip to Harbor Island and to Spanish Wells. The islands are only a 5 minute boat ride, and golf carts are available for rent. We rented them on both islands and had lots of fun driving them around and seeing all the sights.
Eleuthera and Mike's cottage are a great choice if you are looking for a low key vacation on a beautiful and quiet beach. If I could only put it in my backyard...
My sister and I chose this spot wanting peace and quiet (not the noise of an all inclusive) and that is exactly what we got. Hardly a person on the beautiful sandy beach. The water in the cove is shallow so nice for swimming and there are some sights to see snorkelling around the rocky points. This isn't really a 2 bedroom apartment as stated so that surprised us a little. It is actually a studio apartment with 1 bedroom. There are twin beds the living room, and twin beds in the bedroom. Everything you need is there including towels, lawn chairs and grass matts for the beach. Mike, our host who lived above the studio apartment is absolutely lovely and was very accommodating. If we needed anything he enthusiastically found it, loaned or gave it which is wonderful as there isn't a store close by. What is close by (walking distance) however are the Queens baths (google, it's cool), the Glass window bridge, twin sisters beach and Danny's bar for a Sunday night Bahamian Rake and Scrape. The pictures don't do it justice so we are sending Mike new ones. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!! Thanks Mike!!
My boyfriend and I went there to escape part of the Ohio winter and explore some of the places I had read about. Property description accurate, clean and cozy. We slept VERY well there. The owner, Mike, was helpful throughout our stay. Prior to our trip Mike was willing to make adjustments to booking after the fact when travel arrangements shortened our stay. He arranged for a driver to pick us up at the airport and take us grocery shopping. He accommodated us with use of phone, a beer delivery, hitching a couple of rides, and (from Sandy) a tomato when I inquired. Thank you Mike - and Sandy! I researched a lot of options before choosing this place. I wasn't looking for a resort, but wanted to be on a beach, somewhere private, but budget minded. While visiting we snorkeled, walked the beach morning and evening, collected shells, visited Harbour Island on a golf cart, explored Surfer's Beach, Glass Window Bridge, Cow and Bull rock formations, Governor's Harbor, and the Leon Levy Plant Preserve, hitch-hiked, tried the Bahama beers, Kalik(gold!), Sands, Strong Back Stout, and High Rock Lager. Did not try the Bush Crack Special. Local restaurants we tried included: Daddy Joe's, Pammy's, Laughing Lizard, and Tippy's. I had the best rosemary tea at Laughing Lizard and a delicious chicken wrap. We had our first conch pizza at Tippy's, very good! Wish we could have stayed longer. We rented a car only one day. I would recommend the car for more than that if you wish to see more sights during your stay. Do bring insect repellent for the "biting hour" during dusk! For fun, I invested in the driSuit waterproof case for my iphone. This allows use of the touch screen underwater, unlike similar products. It worked great for taking photos while snorkeling!
We’ve just got back from a really great holiday over Christmas. A family of four, it was our first time in the Bahamas, and was an opportunity to introduce our two daughters to snorkelling with tropical fish.
Mike and Sandy were great hosts - really friendly, tremendously helpful, but struck just the right balance of offering helpful suggestions or even hands-on help when required, yet giving us privacy to enjoy our Christmas break when we wanted that. The house is great - well equipped and accommodates 4 no problem. The kitchen has all you need for catering. We barbecued turkey hotdogs on Christmas day outside. The electric convection worked well - we used it quite a bit for meals and even baked a surprisingly even and light sponge birthday cake in it.
The best thing about the house is the location though - right on the beach looking across the bay right into the evening sunset. The sand is soft, and the water shelves cleanly and gently deeper and is perfect for learning to snorkel. To left and right by the rocks, there are interesting places to snorkel once you have confidence. By the Cay we saw coral, clams, anemone, angel fish, a ray and a huge range of fish of all sizes and colours. Particular high points for me were a family of large, sharp-nosed silvery fish about three feet long hovering 10 feet off, and a glorious 10 minute period watching a stingray (3 feet wingtip to wing tip) simply cruising the bay backwards and forwards, settling regularly on the sand to feed then fluttering on.
There are a number of things to see locally - the Glass Window Bridge, the Queen’s Baths most notably. It is possible to walk to these and to Gregory Town (around 3 miles off), but you’ll need a car to see much else. Luckily it is possible to rent cars by the day, and again Mike can help (for us, Julian was helpful and reliable, a good guide and a perpetual delight). Even without a car though, we’d recommend a few visits to Daddy Joe’s - right by the house - good food and friendly service.
The only black spot for us were the noseeums. These were tenacious and vicious, and we still have the scabs. Come better equipped than us with effective repellent or resign yourself to being driven crazy with scratching.
We really enjoyed our stay on Eleuthera - we swam, relaxed, laughed, read books, and got around the island. Really recommended.
Most of the time you will be on the beach alone.
