I have been coming to the boundary waters for over 17 years and have enjoyed each and every visit. It is truly something my family and I look forward to every single time. You never tire from the incredible beauty and serenity of this peaceful place. There is plenty to do and plenty of time to NOT do.

Karla Cahlander purchased this cabin in 2002

Simply put, this cabin and it's surroundings are the perfect way to experience the Boundary Waters in comfort and style. It is a real home away from home and provides everything you could possibly need. Being just one mile off the Gunflint Trail, the location is also very convenient.

HeartRock Haven provides comfort, warmth and ambience the minute you walk in. You immediately feel like you're in a true cabin setting; not just a lake home. It is the feel of the woods without being completely isolated.

A FRIEND FILLED ESCAPE

  • 5 of 5
I rented this beautiful North woods home for a weekend away with my fiancee and a few of our friends. The cabin is tastefully decorated in a rustic style that makes it easy to relax and forget about your cell phone and email. We spent one of our days using the excellent cross country ski trails on East Bear Skin which was no more than a 10 minute drive from the cabin. At the end of the day we used the full kitchen to cook up substantial meals and had a few drinks around the big table before heading over to the near by Hungry Jack Lodge. This property has it all, proximity to ski trails, local watering holes, and it's easy to stay in and relax! We can't wait to come north again and hopefully use this little gem of a cabin.

GREAT PLACE TO GET AWAY AND RELAX

  • 5 of 5
My wife ,son and I stayed here over the summer for a well deserved break. The cabin is even better in person than the pictures on here. We could tell the owners have spent a lot of time and thought into the place by how nice it is decorated inside. It was also way more spacious inside than we even expected it to be. The lake the cabin is on is smaller in size, but the nice part about it is there are only a couple other cabins on it so you feel like you have the lake to yourself. For what you get in price for the place, it is well worth it in comparison to renting a cabin at any of the local resorts. Someday we will be back and would highly recommend the cabin to anyone who wants a quiet relaxing vacation in the "true"up north!!

HEARTROCK HAVEN, CABIN ON LEO LAKE OFF GUNFLINT TRAIL

  • 5 of 5
We loved the cabin. In terms of water activities, we love to canoe. ... and we wanted a quiet lake that was not filled with motor boats. Leo Lake proved to be a wonderful haven of peace and solitude. We literally had no noise on the lake until the 4th of July, and that was minimal .. only a few fisherman. If you love the call of loons, then you will be on loon heaven on this lake. And, if you want a longer canoe trip (versus Leo Lake), Hungry Jack Outfitters is just down the road .. where you can rent a Kevlar canoe and make a day trip into the BWCA.

Karla, the owner, has a very nicely appointed kitchen with high end dishes, knives, and cookware. It was a pleasure to use the kitchen. The beds were very comfortable ... and the instructions about how to feed "Shermie the squirrel" were much appreciated (including his antics).

The wild life in that area was spectacular --- we saw moose, baby foxes, nesting loons on Leo Lake, beavers, blue herons, turtles, lots of trout jumping, and flying squirrels. The cabin is also very close to Trail Center and Hungry Jack Lodge. We enjoyed meals and malts at both of those places. Trail Center has the best malts every!! And, of course, we listened to WTIP, the local radio station.

We especially enjoyed the wood burning fireplace on the screened porch, where we could sit by the fire in the evening, and not be tortured by mosquitoes. A BIG PLUS!!!

We will return again next year ... our experience was magical. But, those of you who love the BWCA, and the call of the loons at night, know that about the Gunflint Trail.

A very happy vacationer ....

WONDERFUL, FUN, RELAXING STAY

  • 5 of 5
After spending the morning shopping and eating in Grand Marais - we headed to the cabin. Gunflint Trail and all its curves and thousands of trees is awesome. The cabin is tucked back about a mile from the trail and is absolutely amazing! All 3 families in our group found Heart Rock Haven to be beautiful, comfortable and in a wonderful location. The cabin itself is very charming and has everything you need to relax. You can tell the owner really cares about the cabin and its guests.
We spent a lot of time on the dock - from swimming, to trout fishing, to sunset kayak trips - it was truly amazing. We practically had the lake to ourselves - and some pretty vocal loons! A few of us enjoyed a massage at a nearby resort and ate breakfast at Trail Center one morning. The kids couldn't believe the size of the giant pancakes! A hike on Caribou Rock trail was a fantastic start to one of the days of our trip. The one afternoon it rained - we had a blast in the cabin. The kids did crafts, played darts and watched movies while the adults gathered around the dinning table for cards.
Overall - we all had a wonderful time - it felt like you were in the middle of nowhere. We made tons of memories and were able to relax and simply enjoy the beauty around us. This will likely become an annual get-away for our group and we'd all highly recommend Heart Rock Haven.

PEACEFUL RESPITE AT HEARTROCK HAVEN

  • 5 of 5
Weary after a long year of the trials of life, I turned to VRBO to find the perfect vacation rental where my family and I could disconnect from our modern lives and reconnect with each other and with nature. I'm glad to say that Heartrock Haven was definitely the perfect rental.

The cabin is nestled snugly into the hills alongside Leo Lake. It is a very short walk to the lake, where we did a little ice fishing. The lake is small and private but reportedly has great trout fishing. The cabin was much larger than I expected from the pictures. It was very warm, inviting, and well decorated. Our evenings were filled with fun and laughter as we played darts in the game room or watched the old Johnny Carson DVDs on the comfortable couch in the living room. Our nights were restful in the very comfortable beds.

It was wonderful to be immersed in nature. We were greeted each morning with fresh snow. We saw a grouse in the pine trees near the cabin. We saw a fox on the road. We hear wolves howling at night and, to top it off, we saw two wolves up the Gunflint Trail!

The owner of the property was very kind and helpful as we prepared for our trip. When dealing with online transactions like this, there is always a concern that you cannot trust the party you are doing business with. It was truly a pleasure to do business with this property owner and I would trust her with my family vacation again in the future. Thanks so much!

Finally, I highly recommend the Hungry Jack Lodge too. They had great food and beer and were very friendly and helpful too. It's just a mile up the road.
