Diamond Cove is a unique vacation experience, and the Firebarn is one of its charms. It was once the fire station at Fort McKinley, on the National Register of Historic Places. Where the fire wagons were parked is now the living/dining/kitchen area, open and sunny, with soaring ceilings. The horses' stalls have become the light-filled master bedroom. Upstairs, the firemen's dormitory is now a second bedroom; here you'll be able to climb the original ladder through a trap door to the top of the hose tower, offering 360 degree views of the large private yard, the landscaped parade ground, the swimming pool, and peeks of the ocean. Also on the second floor, the large sleeping loft can provide additional play space for the children
Diamond Cove is heaven for history buffs, and for families with children - no cars are allowed, so the roads and paths are great for bicycling and wandering. We're located on Great Diamond Island, a short ferry ride from Portland (well-known for its restaurants and waterfront attractions). A convenient location, easy to access from the airport or a two-hour drive from Boston, yet you'll feel you've stepped back in time, to a place quite remote from the real world.
Fort McKinley was built during the Spanish American War to guard Portland Harbor. It was manned through the end of World War II, and was restored as a private residential community, Diamond Cove, during the 1990's. The Firebarn is set in the heart of the restored historic buildings, in close walking distance to all of our island amenities.
