Welcome to “The House that Fred Built”. Charming yet practical, our nearly century old home is comfortably set in a quiet neighborhood in the nostalgia of small town Wisconsin. While carefully maintaining its historic charm, Fred's received some renovations and a few modern upgrades in 2006. You could not ask for a better place to hang your hat during your visit to the Baraboo/Dells area.
Fred’s is a 1930 brick home that was proudly showcased in Baraboo’s 2010 Historic Tour of Homes and is respectfully named in honor of its builder. Fred’s is only a 1 block stroll from Baraboo's historic downtown where galleries, specialty shops, wine bar, spa, sports bar, breakfast/coffee shops and “America’s Prettiest Playhouse”- the Al Ringling Theater are all perfectly arranged around the courthouse square. It is also only 6 short blocks from Baraboo’s historic Ringling Bros. Circus, the Circus World Museum and Riverwalk, 6 miles from Devil’s Lake, 10 miles from Wisconsin Dells, sits conveniently between Devil's Head Ski Mountain and Cascade Mountain and is a 3 1/2 hour drive from amazing downtown Chicago's shopping, dining and famous Navy Pier.
Fred’s has been fondly referred to as “cozy”, “charming” and “homey” boasting a comfortable living room with wood burning fireplace, television with DVD player and a video library, book collection and plenty of games and puzzles for guests. The ground floor is rounded out with a formal dining room that seats 6 comfortably, a full kitchen and a bathroom. The upstairs has 3 neatly arranged bedrooms straight from the plans of 1931 practicality with 1 queen bed, 1 full bed and 2 twin beds. Each bedroom is uniquely decorated in warm colors and inviting decor. The living room sofa also folds out into a super comfortable, queen size pull-out bed for additional sleep space.
Fred’s shades a private, grassy backyard with a large patio appointed with fire pit, outdoor furniture and a gas grill; a perfect setting for relaxing with a book, enjoying a glass of wine and a safe place for the kids to play. The basement has a full laundry and additional open space.
Each amazing season offers a diversity of activities and there are endless things to do locally no matter what your interests may be.
FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES there are circus performances, parks and playgrounds, Ochsner Zoo, miniature golf, go-carts, Devil’s Lake and, of course, Wisconsin Dells (the Water Park Capital of the World!) just far enough away to give Mom and Dad a break from water park madness (10 scenic miles) but close enough to spend the day and be home before sunset to walk downtown for a pizza or cook some burgers on the backyard grill.
FOR THE ACTIVE AND OUTDOORSY types, there are plenty of options at Devil’s Lake State Park (6 miles) for beach, windsurfing, scuba diving, hiking, swimming and rock climbing with other opportunities close by for golf, cycling, horseback riding, kayaking, fishing, wildlife and boat rental and water skiing. In the winter months, both Devil’s Head Ski and Golf Resort and Cascade Mountain are within 10 miles of Fred’s House providing a beautiful setting for downhill skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing with snowmobile and cross country ski trails and sledding hills also nearby. Not to mention, the indoor water parks and relaxing spas in the nearby Dells, which have a thriving winter season.
FOR THE CULTURE LOVERS the community promotes diverse shopping, circus history, historic walking tours, art, wineries, outdoor live theater, regular performances at the historic Al Ringling Theater, concerts on the square, farmers market, poetry readings and simple strolls on the Riverwalk. And don’t forget the Ho-Chunk Casino, located on the outskirts of Baraboo, for those travelers with a gambling itch to scratch.
With so much to do right at your fingertips it is easy to overlook the surrounding DAY TRIP destinations. If you haven’t already been, here are a few of our favorites that we find worth the drive; the Mid-Continental Railroad, Taliesen: A Frank Lloyd Wright home, the House on the Rock, Cave of the Mounds, the Aldo Leopold Foundation and the drive to the Merrimac Ferry.
If you are unsure of when you want to visit Baraboo, check the town schedule for year round, annual & bi-annual, DOWNTOWN FESTIVALS such as the downtown Wine Walk Fest (May & Nov), Brew Ha-Ha Beer Fest (Mar & Sep), Circus Celebration (Jul), Christmas Light Parade (late Nov) and the Fair on the Square Festival (May & Oct).
Fred’s, nestled in the valley of the beautiful Baraboo bluffs, is surrounded by the perfect blend of culture, history and adventure. Whether planning a family vacation, a romantic getaway, a girls’ weekend or an extended business stay, Fred’s is a uniquely special choice for accommodations.
We hope after sharing your time here, in the midst of making many wonderful memories, you will be left with the same fondness that we have toward the sweetness of the house, its history and the beauty of the surrounding area. Currently living in Florida, we cherish the changing seasons found up north and visit as often as we can. She was born and raised in Baraboo and he in Sarasota, FL. We met in high school when her family moved to the Gulf coast.
We both keep very busy working in creative fields and always look forward to the mental reprieve we can count on when visiting our home away from home in Baraboo.
We are proud supporters of downtown Baraboo, the Baraboo community and passionate about preserving history, family values and small businesses across the nation.
Edie Hanson purchased this house in 2005
After twenty years in Florida, she was fortunate enough to find this beautiful slice of history nestled in a sweet downtown neighborhood which seemed like a dream come true. Not ready to move back to the snow but passionate about the seasons and her hometown we purchased the house for the opportunity to visit friends and family more often and to be able to share the nuances and charm of her wonderful town with others.
With an appreciation for history, architecture and nostalgia the decision to buy this house came easily. Built by Fred Terbilcox in 1931, he and his family ran a cab service out of the three car garage in the alley. A wealth of history surrounds Fred's House and the Terbilcox family.
After purchasing the house and poking around its nooks and crannies, we found, stuck in the attic rafters, a fascinating charcoal portrait of a man in a black suit. On the back, was written the words Fred Terbilcox.
We couldn't believe the drawing had preserved so well! Soon it was framed and now hangs in the front entryway to honor the gift of his craftsmanship.
There is so much available to do in the Baraboo area, as indicated above in our Welcome, and the choices can be overwhelming.
For your convenience, a more detailed and personalized 'Recommended Activity Guide' is provided for guests at Fred's which includes our personal favorite restaurants, local hot spots, tours and activities.
