Description: Sausalito is a small town located just below the famous Golden Gate Bridge north of San Francisco. Originally a fishing community, it is now the home of dozens of yachts, houseboats and weekend homes. An easy 10-15 minutes drive south back across the bridge brings you right into the heart of San Francisco....or forget the car and take the ferry across. Protected by the hills of the Marin Headlands, and facing east, Sausalito typically has less fog, more sun and warmer temperatures than San Francisco. Being located on the north side of the Bay provides easy access to all of Marin County and the wine country of Napa Valley as well.
From the home, it’s a short walk down the hill to Bridgeway and Calidonia, the two main streets of Sausalito where there are many excellent restaurants and boutique shops. Bicycle and kayak rentals are close by. There is also a movie theater, several parks, and a terminal for the ferry service that takes you directly to Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco.
The home is a charming remodeled and expanded California cottage. Seen from the street, it appears small, but in fact it has over 2000 sq. ft. of interior space. What you can’t see from the street is the large stone terrace in the back that affords a commanding bay view and sweeping vistas from Mt. Tamalpais and Mill Valley to the center of Sausalito itself. You can literally spend hours just watching boating activity on the bay.
The main living area of the house has Brazilian Cherrywood floors while the remainder of the house is fully carpeted. The kitchen has black granite countertops and comes fully equipped for cooking. The house is wired for broadband communications, WIFI and has a 184 channels of cable TV. There are books and travel literature to read and even toys for children.
Welcome home !
We are a family of three, including our teenage son.
Basically, we live and work in Santa Cruz, California, approximately 90 miles south of Sausalito. The house in Sausalito is our home away from home, our weekend getaway. We use the home ourselves almost as much as we offer it to guests, which is why our 'calendar' shows that the house is not booked 100% of the time each month.
Lee Bookman purchased this cottage in 2001
We were looking for a getaway location somewhere around San Francisco. We looked at condos and apartments in the City itself, but decided that Marin County, across the Golden Gate Bridge, was close enough, was a lot quieter and had better weather. We chose Sausalito because it is an older, well-established town with true community spirit among the locals, and because it reminds us a lot of Portifino, Italy.
The weather in Sausalito is just fantastic! It can be cold, gray, wet and foggy in San Francisco, even at the Bridge, but in Sausalito the sun will be shinning, the sky will be blue, and the temperature about 5-10 degrees warmer.
Sausalito is also the gateway to all things North....Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, Anderson Valley, Mendocino, Muir Woods Redwoods, The Marin Headlands, Stinson Beach, San Rafael, Santa Rosa and so much more. Just an ideal Northern California location, and yet, only minutes from downtown San Francisco.
I brought my family to enjoy a vacation in the Bay Area and we picked Sausalito for it's proximity to both SF and to make day trips to Napa and the Muir Woods.
This house quickly felt like home. Waking up the breathtaking views of the Sausalito and sipping coffee from the deck is something I will always remember from this trip.
Everything we needed was in the house, and there was plenty of space for our two young children. The kids room was set up just like their room at home so they were very comfortable.
We are a family that likes to cook a lot and pack lunches for day trips, and the kitchen was stocked with exactly what we needed. Lee was also very helpful in giving me hints on where to park, pick up groceries, and how to navigate the ferries.
I will gladly recommend staying here and hope to visit again some day!
We were in Sausalito for a wedding and family reunion. We absolutely loved this house. The view was amazing, the house comfortable and the town charming. The house was described accurately, but it didn't do it justice. It was even better than we had imagined! There were 5 adults and we were very comfortable. The house was spotless and stocked with necessities needed.
We were so tired from driving up the coast from Big Sur. When we opened the door, our fatigue vanished - the beauty of the house invigorated us! We spent the next hour unpacking and gawking at the boats in the harbor. We just loved this place. My son was thrilled with the "kid's room" - toys, games, books! We were loathe to leave the house but we did walk down to the ferry and ride over to san francisco. On our second day we drove a couple of miles north to Muir Woods. Just amazing! Tips: We loved eating at Bar Bocce on Bridgeway. If you need reinforcements, Molly Stone's near the Bay Model is a must. Sausality Bakery was also a big hit. We can't wait to come back to this magnificent property!
Beautiful views! Very nice house, well furnished and comfortable. We had 4 ladies enjoying a cousins reunion and were quite comfortable. The ferry ride over to San Francisco was wonderful with so much to do you could not do it in a day. It was a short walk down to the waterfront but a climb to come back. Nice quiet area around house. Quick response from owner by email for questions. I would recommend this to just about anyone but do caution that there are some wooden stairs down to the lower 2 bedrooms that might be a challenge for young children or older adults.
We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful house. We found it to be very spacious and welcoming, equipped with everything that a family of five needs. It was a great base for exploring San Francisco at the end of our California road trip. We didn't use the car once, preferring to walk to the ferry terminal and catch the ferry to the city. It was a pleasure to return to Sausalito each evening. We loved the place so much that we spent the final day of our holiday relaxing on the terrace and kayaking in the bay, from the kayak rental place a few minutes walk down the hill. Highly recommended.
We had a fantastic time in Sausalito, it was a great start to our month in California! The place is lovely - we were pleasantly surprised that it was even more spacious with even better views than the website showed - so often its the other way round.
We loved being a short walk away from Sausalito's waterfront, fantastic restaurants, sweet little park and the ferry terminal.
The deck at the house was perfect for hosting friends from the city, and for resting up between exploring.
