More than 50,000 people visit Samaná each year to watch the humpback whales during their mating season between January 15 and March 15. These mammals come during the winter from the North Atlantic in order to enjoy our warm waters and give birth. There have been times when up to 300 whales have been counted in the area.
Los Haitises National Park
This is an experience of pristine mangroves, virgin wildlife, and archeological wonders. It lies in the northeast of the country, in the southwest angle of the bay of Samaná, near the delta of the river Yuna. The area covers 826 km and was originally settled in pre-columbian times by the Tainos, the natives of the island. Los Haitises takes you on a tour to the past, nature as seen by the conquistadores. Taino caves, subtropical forests, and mangrove swamps blend to make this the perfect Caribbean adventure.
Cayo Levantado
This small island is located in the very center of Samaná Bay. It has a beautiful beach, a small exclusive hotel and various facilities for visitors, especially those that arrive from cruise ships to Samaná.
Rincón Beach
This 1.2 mile beach-bay is is still undeveloped and can be reached from the road that goes from Samaná to Las Galeras. It has the peculiarity of being several beaches in one. One side of the beach has incredibly docile and calm waters, while the other side has intense waves that are perfect for bodysurfing. Although it is relatively untouched, it is still considered one of the best beaches in the world.
Las Galeras
This is a quiet beach in the most north eastern point of the country. The highlight of this beautiful beach is the recreational diving aquarium built by the Japanese man, Kaio. Close-by are Madama beach and Frontón beach, which are both great for climbing.
The 'El Limon' Waterfall
A great adventure that you will never forget, this trip takes you to the interior of the peninsula where the mountains reach a height of 2,100 feet. You will get to go on horseback for 30 minutes along very steep paths with incredible tropical vegetation, wildlife, coffee and cocoa plants and a great variety of tropical fruits. When you arrive at the 120 foot high waterfall, you will be captivated by its spectacular beauty that makes the whole trip worth it.
