Humpback Whales Watching
More than 50,000 people visit Samaná each year to watch the humpback whales during their mating season between January 15 and March 15. These mammals come during the winter from the North Atlantic in order to enjoy our warm waters and give birth. There have been times when up to 300 whales have been counted in the area.
Los Haitises National Park
This is an experience of pristine mangroves, virgin wildlife, and archeological wonders. It lies in the northeast of the country, in the southwest angle of the bay of Samaná, near the delta of the river Yuna. The area covers 826 km and was originally settled in pre-columbian times by the Tainos, the natives of the island. Los Haitises takes you on a tour to the past, nature as seen by the conquistadores. Taino caves, subtropical forests, and mangrove swamps blend to make this the perfect Caribbean adventure.
This small island is located in the very center of Samaná Bay. It has a beautiful beach, a small exclusive hotel and various facilities for visitors, especially those that arrive from cruise ships to Samaná.
This 1.2 mile beach-bay is is still undeveloped and can be reached from the road that goes from Samaná to Las Galeras. It has the peculiarity of being several beaches in one. One side of the beach has incredibly docile and calm waters, while the other side has intense waves that are perfect for bodysurfing. Although it is relatively untouched, it is still considered one of the best beaches in the world.
This is a quiet beach in the most north eastern point of the country. The highlight of this beautiful beach is the recreational diving aquarium built by the Japanese man, Kaio. Close-by are Madama beach and Frontón beach, which are both great for climbing.
The 'El Limon' Waterfall
A great adventure that you will never forget, this trip takes you to the interior of the peninsula where the mountains reach a height of 2,100 feet. You will get to go on horseback for 30 minutes along very steep paths with incredible tropical vegetation, wildlife, coffee and cocoa plants and a great variety of tropical fruits. When you arrive at the 120 foot high waterfall, you will be captivated by its spectacular beauty that makes the whole trip worth it.

Location, location, location
breathtaking views, memorable romance
The views are addicting. The humpbacks are visible (binoculars) from a large balcony off the bedroom and the living area. The unit has daily maid service, which is excellent. The AC is beyond excellent. The staff was consistently friendly and helpful. The pool is well maintained with another pool and cool jaquzzi below. The beaches are very private, but 88 or 112 steps down and up. We are mid range and it is worth the walk. The restaurant is very good, but options may be limited. Negatives: Very limited housewares. No salt No pepper No anything. Simple cooking and serving options were limited The grocery is across from Scotia Bank and they are very helpful. Know your currency exchange rates and possibly convert some for gas stations.
We arrived at Vista Mare after dark (after a slightly harrowing drive avoiding motoconchos and buses...), unaware of what lay before us, and awoke the next morning to the most spectacular sweeping views of Samana Bay. Vista Mare is a gem of a hotel with comfortable accommodations, a good restaurant and two beautiful private beaches. It is impeccably maintained. We took day trips to Las Galeras, Las Terrenas, Cayo Levantado, and went into Santa Barbara de Samana often for meals, and each time we returned to Vista Mare we knew we'd made an excellent decision. If you're looking for all-inclusive bustle and entertainment, this is not the place for you; but if you're looking for a beautiful, peaceful place to relax, you can't go wrong here. Be advised that the photos are of a representative unit, but all are similarly furnished, and a car is a must if you want to get around.
My wife and I spent a week at Vista Mare after two days in Santo Domingo. We had a great time. The unit is just fabulous for two people. The king-sized bed and daily maid service were just right. We loved the balcony that looked out over Samana Bay. We spent several cocktail hours at sunset there enjoying the wonderful view. We even ate two meals out there after enjoying several restaurants in Samana for larger meals. The private beach at Vista Mare was empty during our one-week stay although we did a lot of exploring: Playa Fronton, whale watching El Limon donkey ride, etc. We loved the Dominican Republic and the friendly people. We also spent a week in Punta Cana as part of this trip and liked the Samana area better. Will plan to go back some time in the future.
Our stay at Vista Mare was amazing and my husband and I would love to return there in the future. We visited in January and had good weather about 75% of the time. It sprinkled almost every morning, but the afternoons were very sunny and the temperature was perfect (high 60s, low 80s). The hotel was almost empty for most of our trip, which was very nice because it felt very quiet and private. There was almost no one at the beaches and very few people in the restaurant. However, on the last few days more people showed up, and on our last night there was a large party with very loud music playing at the pool. It continued all night, and there was no where to go in the restaurant to get away from the loud music and have a quiet dinner. (I found out l later that January 21st is Our Lady of Altagracia Day.)
The food we ate during our stay was all very good. The fresh fruit in our kitchen on the day we arrived was some of the most delicious fruit I have ever tasted. Likewise, the food at the restaurant was gourmet quality, reasonably priced (US$ 9 for a pasta dish) and the service was exceptional. My husband and I speak very limited Spanish, but the friendly servers spoke some English, so this was not a problem. We also ate some delicious dinners in Samana.
Vista Mare itself is an amazingly beautiful place. Each unit has a balcony that has a breathtaking view that overlooks the beach and gets plenty of sunshine all day long. The resort is built onto the side of a very steep hill which makes for incredible views from the restaurant and pool at the top of the hill. We watched whales from our breakfast table all week long. The hill drops more than 200 hundred feet from the main gate to the beach. We are young and healthy so this was not a problem for us, although I would not recommend this place for people with bad knees or who can't climb more than a few flights of stairs. The room was cleaned everyday and the maid even tended to our dishes.
All the employees at Vista Mare were very friendly and very professional. Humberto and Jose, who work at the restaurant, were excellent. The front desk concierge spoke enough English to make up for our poor Spanish skills, and the maids and security guards always greeted us with a smile.
Vista Mare is gated and most of the units are set back from the road. There are security guards stationed around the property, which contributed to the overall feeling of safety.
