The Blue Jay Cottage (500 sqf) was built in 2009 and is located in Kalapana Sea View Estates near the entrance.
This property has ocean view from living room and lanai(deck). In winter time you will see whales.
1 bed room+ convertible bed.(sleep 2 to 4),full kitchen,living/dining room,full bathroom(bath tub,shower,toilet and washbasin counter),BBQ (on deck), washer and gas dryer.
We purchased this property in 1994 because of beautiful and dramatic scenery,warm weather year around and fantastic sight seeing(historical sites,botanical garden,volcano park,Tsunami Museum,Mauna Kea and Observatory,and many more)
We enjoy to go to hot pond and steam caves. Also we enjoy shopping and eating in Pahoa area.
Big Island is the most interesting and exiting Island of all Hawaiian islands.
We love this place very much,so we built this cottage in 2009.
You will enjoy the view of the Ocean, the beauty of park in front of the property with bus service,enchanting surrounding terrain and vegetation.
You will experience very different climates,vegetation and scenery every few miles throughout the island.
I stayed at Blue Jay Cottage for the month of March and loved it! This small cottage is perfect for 1-2 people who want a quiet vacation stay at a very reasonable rate. It’s comfortable and clean, with almost everything you need for a short or long stay in the area. I felt very much at home there. A person can sit at the dining table and look out over the yard, see lots of birds, and a little bit of ocean view, and there are blinds on the windows so you can also have privacy. It’s noteworthy that the deck is well sheltered from the rain, so you can sit out there without getting wet. It was great to have the full kitchen and the washer and dryer. The internet connection was reliable, though not necessarily fast enough for streaming video. There is a small collection of books to read. The property manager is easy to communicate with and responds quickly to questions via email or phone. She allowed me to check out late (due to my flight schedule). Although there are many properties to rent in Seaview, Blue Jay cottage is one of the closest to the ocean, only 2 blocks from Seaview lawn/park, a wonderful spot to view the ocean, star gaze, play frisbee (or whatever), or just sit and enjoy the view. There is usually some level of cell phone signal at Seaview lawn also. Kehena black sand beach is ~1/2 mile down the road, easy to walk to. There is a great Saturday market at Kalapana, 4 miles down the road. Also, Kalani Oceanside Resort is just under a mile away (0.9), close enough to walk or bike. I purchased an inexpensive month-long day use pass that enabled me to use the pool/spa, where I met people from all over the world. A person can also book a massage there, or attend a variety of workshops and classes for a small fee. The only thing I would like different is that, in the booking process, it would be helpful to have an invoice that at least describes what you are paying for (property identifier, number of days, dates, fees). As is, you just get a PayPal invoice for “goods”, with no other information.
Overall, I loved staying at Blue Jay Cottage and highly recommend it.
Blue Jay Cottage is a perfect place to stay on the Big Island if you are looking for a peaceful, quiet, remote, relaxing and beautiful jungle getaway. It's clean and has every amenity you need (except snorkel gear). Comfortable bed and a kitchen with all the utensils. Nice deck for morning coffee. A little far from the Kona side but still a great location with lots of pools and snorkelling nearby. We loved it.
We returned to this quiet oasis where we stayed 3 yrs. ago. We came for the same reasons we enjoyed our stay the last time. A more back to nature experience than the crowded Kona side of the Island. Really friendly people and neighbours,( our immediate neighbours were the famed ice cream makers on the Island). We enjoyed the short walk to the Meditation and Yoga Centre where we met interesting people from all over the world. On Wednesdays and Saturdays there is a market and live music at Uncle Henry's, a couple of miles down the road. Good food and the experience of being in the old Hawaiian Kingdom. Close proximity to the Queens Pond and Champagne ponds and several natural parks. The cottage is fairly simple, but modern and well equipped, especially the kitchen. Enjoyed the symphony of the Coqui frogs at night, and saw colourful Gekkos during the day. Lovely scenic drives through the jungle canopy! A great restful getaway.
Blue Jay Cottage made the best escape from our Canadian winter.We arrived with our road bikes and snorkels and we weren't disappointed.The beautiful tropical forests were amazing to ride through.We picked avacados out of the trees regularly.So many places to swim and snorkel.The snorkeling was the best on the island that we had found.We did rent a car for days we didn't want to bike so we had access to all the fresh markets,loved them all but Hilo was my favorite,because of the large size.From Blue Jay the rest of the island was easily explored.The cottage was clean simple and comfortable.Motion lights would come on when we arrived late,I appreciated the laundry more than I thought.The cabin is just cute, and everything is very clean.We had no lack for anything there,it was well stocked with kitchen tools etc.The layout of the grounds was filled with tropical bushes plants and palms. We stayed a month from mid Dec to mid Jan and really enjoyed the locals and the different events that they put on.It was a very relaxing community with all kinds of characters.The huge grass covered palm filled park is only a short block away and we went there often to watch the sunrises the sunsets and hopefully a whale show.I couldn't get enough of watching the surf crash onto the lava cliffs.If your looking for the Islands best kept secret...this is the spot.
Had a great time in Hawaii. This cottage made a nice base camp for our travels around the island. Near black sand beach, Volcano National Park, tide pools. Very nice for the price. Would recommend this cottage. That being said, would make a suggestion. As you can see from pictures you are quite close to other rentals and would have like to have blinds or curtains in main room. We were gone most the time during the day and when we were there at night, we felt like we were on display (not that we thought anyone was looking in) being that close. Again, if you are looking at this part of island for your stay, would recommend.
I took my family to Hawaii for Christmas this year and we stayed at the Blue Jay for most of our 10 day visit. We were so pleased to find this charming cottage. As a residential leasing agent in San Francisco, I have seen many units. The Blue Jay exceeded our expectations.
The kitchen is well equipped not only with pots, pans, dishes and utensils but even had spices and some condiments. We were able to cook with ease which really helps since we have 2 children. The on site laundry facilities are also a big plus.
The place was immaculate but it still felt kid friendly. There is a small yard for them to run in on the property as well as a large lawn a short walk down the street where they could really run. We watched sun rises from there, just stunning.
The property managers are very professional. They provide other services as well so contact them for other tourism needs.
We loved our visit at the Blue Jay!
