Photos and Description of the Santa Teresa vacation house rental
Big 6 Bedroom Home, 3400 sq. ft, By The Beach, Centrally Located

The Jungle House is the best value vacation rental home right in the heart of Playa Santa Teresa. For an adventurous family, or any group of self-sufficient, adventurous travelers that prefer rustic charms & independence, The Jungle House is the ideal rental near the beach, and everything the town has to offer.

An adventurous family, three-four couples, or six-eight friends traveling together can enjoy renting an entire large house and walk to the beach and the best surf breaks in Costa Rica within five minutes. 2-4 people benefit by renting the upstairs apartment all for themselves.

Naturally and artistically designed in a rustic style, accommodations at The Jungle House are 6 rooms in a safe & secure two story, 3400 square foot house built to make you feel intertwined with the natural environment. It feels secluded because we are totally surrounded by big trees, and you can hear the Pacific Ocean. We are one of the few lodging options where you don't have to walk uphill to get back & forth to the beach and town. And, out the front gate is the lively main street with shops & restaurants.

The upstairs part of The Jungle House is like its own apartment with a small kitchen, big living room, two bedrooms, and 1.5 bathrooms. The upstairs rooms are:

The Jungle Suite: This room is perfect for a couple. It has a king size bed & its own full bathroom, A/C, and views of palm tress all around. It is upstairs & shares a living room w/ a large sofa & bar area.

The Junior Suite: This bedroom has a double bed, and one half bath. There is no A/C, but two ceiling fans keep the room cool. Private bamboo showers are outside too.

1-4 travelers can rent just the upstairs apartment -- The Jungle Suite, Junior Suite -- with its own little kitchen, 1.5 baths, and living room; and have that area all to yourselves for $899/week.

The downstairs has the main kitchen, dining area, four bedrooms and one bathroom. The downstairs rooms are:

The Jungle Room Grande: 2 beds (1 queen & 1 single) with A/C & ceiling fans. There is a common bathroom for 5 rooms, bamboo and outdoor showers are outside.

The Jungle Room Solo: 1 double bed with shelves & a place to hang clothes, A/C & ceiling fan.

The Jungle Surf Bunks: 2 identical rooms with bunk beds & A/C. There is a common bathroom for 5 rooms, bamboo showers are outside.

With one of Central America's best beach breaks right outside our backyard, it is perfect for a Costa Rica surf vacation. We often host yoga retreats & surf schools at the Jungle House too.

Forbes Magazine ranked Santa Teresa, Costa Rica one of the top ten most breathtaking beaches in the world! Its lush tropical scenery, volcanic rock formations, an abundance of wildlife, and proximity to outdoor adventure activities make it one of the best beach towns in Costa Rica. Although The Jungle House is oceanfront, you cannot see the Pacific Ocean due to the dense foliage. To get to the beach & main surf break, it's just a 5 minute walk to the ocean via a public path.

You’ll definitely feel that you’ve entered an exotic jungle since it is common to see many species of animals in the backyard of the house, including groups of Howler Monkeys, iguanas, butterflies, and a variety of birds.

The setting is great for friends traveling together, families, and other groups. With the variety of activities available it is ideal for groups that want to spend a lot of time being active together. You can learn to surf, practice yoga, or participate in the many activities offered like, canopy tours, day trips to waterfalls, horseback riding, or just chilling at the beach.

Everyone can come together to cook dinner at home. We have a big BBQ & picnic area, as well as an ample kitchen for making family style dinners. There is a service that delivers delicious veggies, herbs, fruits, and eggs (as well as booze).

Amenities include A/C, ceiling fans all over the house keep it cool, and hot water. On the second level there is a small kitchen, 10 person leather couch, Wi-Fi internet, and ping pong table. Downstairs has a large, common kitchen, outdoor BBQ & picnic area, and a Yoga Studio/Rustic Style Large Hangout Rancho.

The main surf break is 5 minutes away and there are waves for all levels and abilities, warm water and air temps year round, and natural tide pools a few minutes away too. There is secured parking, and we're conveniently located nearby banks, the medical clinic, small grocery stores, shopping, surf shops, and restaurants.

Everyone has access to free coffee & fruit, wi-fi, main kitchen, BBQ, dining room, hammocks, and covered deck. The kitchen is ample with everything you need to cook, coffee maker, and blender for making smoothies. We can also arrange breakfast, lunch, or dinner for a low additional cost.

Santa Teresa is a very cool, international town with many great restaurants. It is just a few minutes walking to all the action. There is more nightlife in Playa Carmen, about 10 minutes away in taxi.

We have safe parking if you rent a car. We can arrange a van to drive you here too. The best way to get here, though, is by flying in a small plane from San Jose to Tambor airport. Check Sansa for the latest prices. It's a 45 minute car ride from Tambor to The Jungle House. Once at Tambor, with advance notice we will coordinate a pick up.

I speak English & Spanish and will be a very welcoming host for you. I live downstairs, so I'm available to help you with anything. My name is Joe Gatto, estoy a la orden. Ideally, your group is very responsible & tidy, needs no supervision, and I can just help you get situated then go travel around some and meet you back at the house your last day.

The Jungle House has consistently gotten great reviews over the years. We take pride in maintaining a great beach house in Santa Teresa Costa Rica, and it only keeps getting better. We're very thankful to be here & extremely grateful for our guests & the positive reviews! Come visit us soon…

These are some of the reviews from this year:

Paul B. from Toronto, Canada says:

Really cool house with a variety of rooms and accommodation options in a great location in Santa Teresa just a few minutes from the beach. The manager (Joe) is a great guy and will help you out with whatever you need (restaurant recommendations, surf lessons, ordering fresh fish, etc!!!). Well maintained, spacious and well designed.

Polkatrip from Germany says:

I was visiting my girlfriend for 2 weeks in late March 2012. The Jungle House is a great place to stay - I can say so, since I ended up spending way more time in the house, than originally planed. Just like most folks in Santa Teresa, I wanted to go surfing twice a day, but at the 2nd day of my vacation my foot got cut by another guy's surfboard - I needed to get stitches - so much for surfing...

But 'being trapped' at the JH turned out to be a really cool experience...

First of all: the place is - (compared to other hostels in S.T.) all nice and CLEAN all the time. Sure, there are always some lizards around and one or the other ant, but come on - it's a Jungle House...

The bathroom and floors get cleaned every day and also the bed sheets get changed after a couple of days.

There are two fridges, so you never run out of cooling space and even those fridges get cleaned at least once a week. There's is free very good coffee in the morning and the kitchen is also nicely equipped with blenders, a toaster, water dispenser and of course a big stove - preparing meals was really fun here.

All rooms and the floors have fans (that actually work) so it never gets too hot (even in the dry season), finding sleep was not a problem at all.

(If you are sensitive to noise you should probably avoid the room at the end of the ground floor, since it is pretty close to the street. This was our room, but we didn't mind at all).

Right next to the house is some kind of covered stage where one can practicing yoga and as far as I could see the guests made quite a lot of use of it.

The beach and the supermarket are just a 5 Minute walk away, which is very handy.

If you need to have hot water - be warned - there is no hot water in the JH, but IMHO this is absolutely not necessary, at least not in the dry season. There's a shower in the bathroom inside, one outside the house and one in the 'garden', which is very impressive to use, at night under a clear starry sky.

What I liked the most, was the nice little garden in front of the house. There were two hammocks hung between stakes (rammed into the ground) and nice beach-sand underneath (which was obviously brought here, just to pl

About Joe Gatto

I love to travel, have visitors, and meet cool people from around the world.

My favorite travel destinations are tropical ones with beautiful beaches, and mountains to hike around in. To me there is nothing better than swimming in the ocean, running on the beach, and eating fresh fish & fruit.

I also like to visit big cities. In the U.S., my favorite ones are New York & San Francisco. I've been to Tokyo, Bangkok, Paris, Rome, and Rio de Janeiro. There are still a lot more mega cities on the list, like Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Madrid, Milano, Berlin, and Shanghai.

I grew up in Columbus, Ohio & moved to Miami after college. Living there made me want to learn Spanish well.

I learned Spanish in Caracas, Venezuela in an exchange program at Centro Venezolano Americano. I taught English & learned Spanish in the school, and made many wonderful friends. Then I worked as a journalist at The Daily Journal, the English language newspaper of Venezuela. That was a great experience because I was the cultural reporter and wrote about the arts, theater, music, and dance scenes in Caracas. I also got to meet & interview most of the ambassadors stationed there, and write reports about their countries, and the activities of their embassies in Venezuela. I ended up living there for three years & having a fabulous time.

Then I moved to Maui to go to massage school and stayed 5.5 years having a good time. I worked as a massage therapist at a hotel on the beach and was a DJ at night. I'm really into funky music from across the globe. I got to DJ for many wonderful weddings in gorgeous Hawaiian settings. I also held down a great Friday night party at Jacques' in Paia for four years. That was a blast, and I got to meet cool music lovers from all over the world.

I'm now managing The Jungle House for my friend that owns it. My motto is explore the world, follow what fascinates you, and invite others in to share what you've learned. I'm Joe Gatto, estoy a la orden...

Why Joe Gatto chose Santa Teresa

There is so much to do here. Obviously a surf trip to Santa Teresa Costa Rica will be epic! The surfing is world famous, and you can step right out our back door to awesome waves. We host yoga retreats, and there are great teachers around town too that can come to The Jungle House especially for your group. You can do a canopy tour and hike in Cabo Blanco National Park, rent ATVs for cruising around town & do tours through the jungle, go horseback riding, get a great sports massage on the premises, visit tide pools, go sea kayaking, or deep sea fishing. There are great restaurants in town and you can also buy fresh fish from the local fisherman and cook it at the Jungle House's BBQ.

Santa Teresa is such a beautiful, primordial place. Living here is so healthy; exercising outside, swimming, running on the beach daily is the best. I love eating fresh fruit & fish everyday. The people are very friendly & the international vibe keeps it interesting.

We hope to see you this season...

What makes this house unique

Imagine laying in a hammock in the garden, under the trees, birds singing, monkeys playing, iguanas scurrying. You're relaxing after a day of swimming in the ocean & hiking through Cabo Blanco Nature Preserve.

This evening you guys are going to BBQ fresh fish that your husband got from the local fishermen. Delicious vegetables came from the nearby farmers' market, and you have a case of Imperial in the fridge.

After dinner, you'll all walk down to the main street and have drinks in an outside bar, and befriend other travelers.

The next morning you can wake up, enjoy the fresh papaya banana smoothie that is waiting for you, and go straight out to the Pacific Ocean to jump in and wake yourself up. You go for a run on the beach, do a sun salutation on the sand, go for another swim, and head back to The Jungle House for a delicious Costa Rican breakfast.

Today you and your friends will go on a canopy tour, cruising on ziplines above the jungle. You know this is something you'll never forget.

You have afternoon surf lessons, then a great massage to look forward to after that.

This is a typical day in Santa Teresa; the sky is the limit for what you can do here. I live here & fell in love with The Jungle House because of this healthy, active, relaxing, and reinvigorating lifestyle. I invite you to come down and experience it for yourself. You'll fall in love too...

Car: not necessary

Playa Santa Teresa is one of the best beach towns in Costa Rica, and offers surfers many options. There are several surf schools, and independent teachers that give lessons to beginners. Experienced surfers benefit from a variety of breaks all within walking distance from their vacation rental on the beach, or short drives of 10-15 minutes.

The Jungle House has a tremendous beach break right out in front. The beach break in front can get big in the winter - 12 foot faces and over - and can be a bit of a workout when it gets that big. Sometimes, like especially May-August, it is OK for beginners.

If you stayed in the Santa Teresa area and wanted to go to other breaks, you would need a car. Here is some information about how far away they are. You might want to consider Pavones to the south, June - August is a good time to go. It is a nice place, and can get crowded on a big swell, but it offers plenty of water time as there is not much else to do in town. You'd probably only surf the main point, but the point is fun and you won't get tired of surfing that wave.

Driving from The Jungle House, about 30 minutes by car, is Cabuya with right and left point breaks. It is best when the beach break is at least a few feet overhead (measured on face, not the back).

Sunset Reef is about 10 minutes by car. It starts working when the beach break is at least a few feet overhead and needs light or offshore winds to turn it into a steep barreling wave. About 10 minutes by car is Mar Azul, a quirky left point that can be fun, but it isn't the best break in town. It's easy to ride, so good for intermediate level surfers.

Suck Rock is a famous wave at Playa Santa Teresa, which can get big and barrel. It is about 10 minutes walking distance north from The Jungle House. Walk about 5 minutes south to a semi point break where rights break off a rocky outcropping.

Then one of our favorites, Boca Barranca, a long left, is about 2.5 hours by car. We can set you up with a taxi driver that knows all the best breaks, and will drop you off & pick you up later. You can also rent ATVs to easily get to various breaks around Santa Teresa, PLaya Carmen, and Malpais. For beginners, we have friends that give lessons, and offer our guests a discount, just ask the manager at The Jungle House.

The best way to get here is by flying in a small plane from San Jose to Tambor airport. Check www.flysansa.com for the latest prices, about $45pp to $90pp. It is a 30 min jumper flight from the San Jose or Liberia Airport to Tambor. (Note: only two surfboard bags allowed per Sansa flight, and no surfboard bag over 7' will be accepted.) It's a 45 minute car ride from Tambor to The Jungle House. Once at Tambor, with advance notice we will coordinate a pick up.

You can also take a bus for about $14.00 USD from San Jose (ph #2642-0219). The bus leaves San Jose approximately 7AM and 2PM daily, and is Greyhound style with A/C that goes virtually non stop into town. You will need to take a taxi from SJO Airport to 'La Coca Cola' bus station (about $20 USD – we can coordinate this for you if you send us an email). The bus takes about 6 hours and will drop you off at The Jungle House. We are located across the street from 'Pizza Tomate' - pronounced Toe-Mah-Tay-, so tell the Bus Driver to drop you off at Pizza Tomate in Santa Teresa. The Jungle House is a few minutes North (to the right) once you arrive into the Mal Pais area.

We have safe parking if you rent a car. Car Rentals: Make sure to get good directions at the car rental place as to how to get onto the new highway. Contact us before you arrive in Costa Rica and we'll email you detailed directions.
