About Steve Frellick

This luxurious gem is owned by Buddy LaPorte and Debra Mager, an Atlanta couple who has fulfilled their dream to own a home in Asheville. Asheville has always held a certain allure to us, and we have visited for years, always staying at The Lofts at 16 Church St.

We really loved The Lofts, and wanted to replicate that 'contemporary, urban chic' feel, that always felt so welcoming!

With Sunny Ridge we now have that place of our own that we are thrilled to be able to share with others looking to come explore the beauty & allure of the Asheville mountains.

Why Steve Frellick chose Asheville

The goal was to find a home that was extremely close to downtown, but far enough away from the 'hustle & bustle' and a feel for the mountains. We also wanted a property we could 'mold' to our personality, and capture some urban flair as well.

This home fit the bill, and afforded us the opportunity to do a complete renovation to our tastes and desires. We hired the Frellick Brothers & their Nooroom Design & Renovation company to do the work, as they had done The Lofts, which we fell in love with years ago. The results are nothing short of spectacular!

What makes this bungalow unique

This luxurious home, just a quick 4 miles from the center of downtown Asheville, is an upscale hideaway After a complete overhaul of the home, including the installation of a gourmet kitchen with granite countertops and a six burner stove, 4 Sunny Ridge is available for your get-a-way. The house is decorated with the couple's art collection, giving it a colorful stylish atmosphere with the comfort of a mountain home away from home. This gem features a beautifully appointed living room, a dining room that seats 8, 3 bedrooms, two with queen beds, the master with a king bed and private bath, a tv in each, 2 additional full baths, a magnificent deck off the kitchen with a wooded private view on the mountainside and more seating. The house also features a cozy den with a couch big enough to sleep on, a 47' tv, and a screened in porch. There are two Xboxs for your use as well.

4 Sunny Ridge has the the unique advantage of being just outside of the hustle and bustle of downtown but only a few minutes away. Halfway between downtown and the charming town of Weaverville to the north, which features its own restaurants and boutiques, this house is a dream.

Mountain stay in Asheville

Nice mountain retreat. Fair value provided for the rental cost.
Advantages of this property include: very nice gourmet kitchen, good split bedroom floor plan, house was well stocked of all necessities, had comfortable beds, interesting eclectic art collection, good location for sightseeing, not far from Asheville racquet club for tennis and a gym, great outside deck and grill nice for dinners. Great restaurant at the bottom of the hill for lunch or dinner.
Some possible disadvantages for other renters to consider include one air conditioner for the whole house leaves the downstairs very cold, upstairs guest rooms ok, master bedroom is too warm, very steep driveway to negotiate for us and guests (not a property for anyone with trouble walking, disabilities, or very young children), limited parking due to the steepness of the drive, (I know it is advertised to park 7 vehicles but there is no way to park near that many on that driveway) , no garage door opener so constantly have to park, go through the front door, down stairs, open garage, back to the car and then park again and when it's raining as it was for one of the weeks of our stay you get all wet doing this every time you go in and out, master closet was locked and so have to hang clothes in small front closet and one of the guest bedrooms (inconvenient if you have guests), only 3 hangers provided so if you are staying very long bring your own or you are out of luck, the phone rings often and mostly at dinner time and in the evenings, not sure if this number is on the do not call list but if not, needs to be, and there were some initial issues that we had to address when we first got there (black ants in the bathrooms were a nuisance, tv cable/dish didn't work but we pleaded with someone on the phone and they finally helped us get it connected downstairs (took 90 minutes to get this done), never did get the TVs in the bedrooms to work, and a few other housekeeping issues we addressed), and a couple of maintenance people took us by surprise (the landscapers as well as window cleaner estimate people kind of just showed up, would have been nice to know they were scheduled)...
All in all, we enjoyed our time in Asheville and thank the owners for the use of their home.

Owner's Response: Everyone loves the gourmet kitchen and art collection at Sunny Ridge! The location is great too – you get the best of both worlds being just minutes from downtown while also having a very private outside deck for your enjoyment. We always try to be proactive and have our homes in tip-top shape for guests but the reality is, sometime we aren't aware of problems until someone tells us. We truly appreciate when our guests call any concerns to our attention, and we address them as quickly as possible. Now that we know about the issues that this guest has mentioned, we will do our best to correct and improve each of them. We are glad to know that, despite these inconveniences, our guests were able to enjoy their stay! Asheville is a great town and we believe that our homes are the best places to stay while visiting this city in the mountains!

Cooks kitchen

Nice home north of Asheville towards Weaverville. Well located with good access to the interstate and shopping in North Asheville.

Very well appointed cooks kitchen and grill. We enjoyed cooking here.

We enjoyed the funky contemporary art collection.

Master bedroom is nice size.

Very attentive and reachable managment service. We had a problem with the shower and it was fixed the same day. Well done!

Would have been five star review but for a few issues:
1. Master does not have a closet for guests...it is locked as the owners closet. We were forced to put our hangers in the front hall closet.
2. Secondary bedrooms are small.
3. The driveway is very steep. The garage is level, but not easily accessable since garage door openers are not provided. This could be easily fixed by providing the openers with a replacement fee if lost.
4. Nice small TV room in the basement. However, the whole house is on one air conditioner zone so when the AC is on the basement is at least 10 degrees cooler. We had to put on a sweater and use a blanket to watch TV.

Owner's Response: At Yonder we try to provide the absolute best customer experience at all of our homes, all the time, but we are not perfect, and will never be able to be perfect for every single guest. Having stated that, we would like to briefly respond to the issues noted in this "near 5-Star" review.
First, this is a "vacation rental by owner", and the owners stay at their home whenever they can make a trip to enjoy Asheville. As such, they do have some locked closets for their belongings & such. The Master closet happens to be one of them. It seems like a very minor "inconvenience" to have to hang you clothes, (that need hanging), in the closet just outside the bedroom.
Second, the other 2 bedrooms are of "normal" size for a home built in the 80's, and actually accommodate quite a bit. They are very functional, and include a large closet, TV on a dresser, bedside tables, and a chair. They each have 2 windows, and with queen sized beds, plenty of room to get around.
Third, the driveway is "steep" for anyone coming from "flatlands" like Florida or elsewhere; for the mountains, it is pretty normal, and is very large in order to allow for up to 7 cars, and room to turn around if you are uncomfortable backing out of a driveway. We do not provide remotes, simply because they were consistently lost or taken, and it became too much of a hassle for the owners.
Next, yes, the home is on a single thermostat, so there will be temperature differential between the floors, but 10 degrees is a bit of an exaggeration. The thermostat is fully controllable, so you can adjust the temps at different times, and there is also a screened porch off the TV room, so you can let in some fresh air, and let out a little "cool" if needed.
All-in-all I truly believe these guests had a "5-Star" experience, but perhaps equate that rating with absolute perfection, which is simply not possible. In the end, we at Yonder want all our guests to leave wanting to come back as soon as possible, and in talking with these guests, they are absolutely coming back to stay with us in Asheville!

Girls get away

This was my first trip to the area. I loved it. The home was in a good location. We had a couple minor issues but overall enjoyed our visit. The home is practically a personal art gallery. We had great fun looking up some of the artist on the web to see other works.
