In the spring of 2002, while driving from Healdsburg to the California coast with his family, Dan Gustafson, a landscape architect and real estate developer, pulled his car to the side of the road. He peered over the fence of the property that would soon become his, and explained to all that this would be a perfect place to grow grapes. Dan saw his dream of planting his own vineyard come true that year with the purchase of those 87 acres in the Dry Creek Valley appellation of Sonoma County.
In 2006 the estate property was expanded to 247 acres with the purchase of an adjacent property. Vineyard plantings are now complete at 20 acres; varieties include Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Rosé of Syrah. The balance of the land will remain as an ecological preserve.
The integrated home and winery that Dan and his craftsman colleagues have created truly merge with the landscape. They offer a spectacular view of Lake Sonoma and have become both workplace and retreat for Dan, his wife Phyllis, the Gustafson family and their friends. The family intends to keep the vineyard property feeling like a private home. This is a place they enjoy hosting visitors and wine lovers from all over the world.
Kaitlin Reed Childers purchased this estate in 2004
The old sheep ranch, at an elevation of 1800 feet above sea level, has rich, red volcanic soil known for producing superb wine grapes. It represents a unique terroir as the highest elevation estate vineyard and winery in Sonoma County. Benefiting from warm summer days and late afternoon Pacific breezes, the vineyard is sustainably farmed with respect for the vines, the land, and the wine-making process.
When creating the vineyard great care was taken to preserve old groves of madrone, oak, and redwood trees, including the “Sonoma County Heritage Tree.” This 300-year-old madrone has a trunk diameter of eleven feet is thought to be the largest madrone tree in Sonoma County, and perhaps the entire state of California.
Our Esate Home is located in the heart of the vineyard, giving you a unique perspective into the farming of our Estate vineyard. It is peaceful and breathtakingly beautiful, and will become your private Estate for the duration of your stay.
This trip to Northern Sonoma County was greatly enhanced by the stay at Gustafson. The luxurious home was only outdone by the beautiful vistas of Lake Sonoma and vineyards all around the property. The staff was extremely helpful to us and the dinner catered by the folks at Baci in Healdsburg served on the deck was something the six of us will not soon forget. We hope to return someday.
Our group of three couples stayed in this fabulous house for three nights following a busy 12 days of teaching at Stanford Law School. We could not have asked for better accommodations or for a more lovely setting! The views are stunning and the night skies amazing! Property and Winery manager, Kaitlin, could not have been more gracious or helpful. She is ready to attend to every detail of your stay, but if it's privacy you're looking for, you'll never know she's anywhere around. The winery is about 17 miles from Healdsburg, so be prepared to bring provisions or have Kaitlin get them for you. The house is absolutely perfect and very comfortable. None of us wanted to leave.
We were a party of four that stayed at this amazing house. From the minute we made inquiries to the booking the house and staying, the team that welcomed us was great. Very responsive and answered all our questions. The house - simply outstanding. We actually stopped the car when we drove up and just looked at the house and view for 5 minutes. The pictures do not do this house justice. It is beautiful and very functional. Kitchen state of the art. Pool was amazing and the deck; well the deck is the best seat in the house. We spent every night setting out there eating, drinking wine and watching the stars. Then there are the sunrises! Get up early every day and watch it happen as it makes your day complete. Bedrooms were comfortable and large. Sound system and everything else was fantastic. And you get "Rampage" (the local AWESOME dog) too. He was a great morning check in. Not a draw back for us, but this house is up the hill and away from town (which we love) so make sure you bring your supplies like the staff recommends. It is actually the remoteness that I liked best. The wine tasting was fun, entertaining, and we all actually learned a few things. The wines are great too and the honor bar is nice to have with a great selection of the Gustafson wines. If we could have stayed another week we would have and we cannot wait to get a group and go back. Highly recommend this house for the peaceful seclusion, great house and views, star gazing and enjoying time with family and friends. Thanks Katilin, Emmitt, and Rampage for a trip and stay that we will not soon forget.
My wife and I are members of the wine club, so we had visited the Gustafson Vineyard before. As we arrived on Monday night, we were greeted by a mother fox and her two babies crossing the road. This was a good sign, since we wanted to be close to wine country but also get away from it all. We have rented other properties from VRBO before but this was the most beautiful and well maintained home we've ever stayed at.
The home has absolutely stunning views of the mountains around Northern Sonoma. A short walk up a path leads to a picnic overlook with gorgeous views of Lake Sonoma. You are looking at the vineyard in several directions. The pool and spa are both private and large.
The kitchen has top of the line appliances. The living room has floor to ceiling windows looking onto the property and the mountains. The master bedroom has well done accent lighting and an incredible master bath. Outside a door on the second floor, you climb a circular staircase to a lookout tower.
We ended up skipping heading to the wineries on 2 days. Instead, we just relaxed by the pool, walked the vineyards and sat on the picnic ridge enjoying wines that were grown and made right on the property.
Grocery shop before coming to this house. It is 25 minutes to Healdsburg. Grill and cook at the house... You'll save money and enjoy the views much more than sitting at a restaurant in town.
My wife is already asking when we can go back.... Hmmm, we'll have to drink Gustafson's wine and savor the memories until that day comes.
The estate home and property are truly amazing. We stayed for three nights with friends and we all had an incredible time. Amazing views, great interior design (modern/luxury), floor-to-ceiling windows in the main living area, great chef's kitchen with two dish-washers and two sinks - lots of different outside areas for entertaining made this an exceptional place to stay.
Beds are heavenly comfortable, and it's so quiet at night - it feels like a little sanctuary. We got woken up in the morning by the most beautiful sunrise over Sonoma county, not a bad way to wake up :-)
The hot-tub is very nice - large enough for a whole group of people, and a perfect place to watch the stars at night.
The tasting room is very close to the estate - and there are people walking by the property during the tasting hours - but everyone is very respectful and we never felt intruded upon - in fact it made for some great occasional people watching.
If you stay here - we can highly recommend to have a wine-tasting, meet the gracious people that run the vineyard and property and be prepared to purchase some too - the wines are truly delicious - and there is nothing more beautiful than enjoying a stunning view with great company and an exceptional glass of wine that was harvested and crafted right there where you are.
We loved every minute of our stay and hope to be back some day in the near future.
We had a perfect stay at the estate despite the rain. The house is fantastic. And we had a thoroughly great time. It's very tastefully decorated, and we will definitely go back to try out the pool!
There are nice hikes in the area w/ red woods and the Russian River. Dining in the area is also great but we opted to cook at home because it was so decadently relaxing to be there.
We have fond memories of our stay. A big thank you to the owners!
Located in the beautiful rolling hills above Lake Sonoma, our Estate Home is nested in 20 acres of sustainably farmed vineyard and attached to a boutique small-production winery. We invite guests to enjoy a private tasting of our award-winning estate wines, and take a tour of the vineyard and winery with Winemaker Emmett Reed. Gustafson is also the perfect place to explore the rest of Dry Creek Valley's 60+ wineries, and enjoy the fine dining and shopping available in downtown Healdsburg.
