My name is Susannah Adlington and I am a portrait artist living in Hampshire, England with my husband Michael. My father’s family have had Irish connections for several hundred years, and my parents bought Westcove House in the early 60s after coming across a 'for sale' sign whilst holidaying in the area. It was love at first sight and since then four generations of our family have been enjoying holidays here – we just love the place and feel sure that you would too. Indeed many of our guests return to Westcove time and time again – something which we view as the highest form of praise!

We purchased and restored this pair of old coastguard cottages when they came on the market in the early 1990s. Pier Cottage has a unique, magical location situated below Westcove House with its own shingle beach.

Pier Cottage is on the water's edge and immerses you in the wild natural beauty of Kerry. It is ideal for all kinds of activities such as hill-walking, cycling or writing and perfect for a quiet secluded break. Watch the seals playing on the rocks and the magical ever-changing light. As the sun sets over the Atlantic, you can nestle up by the fire, guarded against the elements and listen to the cries of the curlews...whilst you sip and Irish whiskey!

PEACEFUL LOCATION, AMAZING VIEWS

  • 5 of 5
From the moment we arrived, this was perfect. Blackberries to pick along the driveway, bees buzzing amongst the wild fuschia, gorgeous sunrises...

Our family LOVES Pier Cottage. It is an incredible place to stay - we were there for 2 weeks in early September. Gathering yourself to get there is one thing, but BEING there is reward enough. From the excellent facilities (3 BR, 2BA, ocean right out the door) to the friendliness of the people (thank you, Susannah and Katherine), it all made for a memorable stay. There's a row boat you can use to get across the harbor mouth to a beautiful sandy beach (try at low tide, it's easier).

The cottage was clean and warm - internet worked just fine and the large kitchen had just about anything you'd need. Walk out the door and there's a stone beach, which our daughter clambered on several times daily to see what the tide left for her. Behind the cottage is another stone beach, also perfect for learning about tides, nature, and more. There's a fireplace to add to the atmosphere, laundry facilities, and thick stone walls to keep the rain out!

We learned about local markets (Kenmare, Sneem) and got glorious fresh fish and veggies for our meals. We traveled to Skellig Chocolate Company, and Portmagee for more fish. We enjoyed Derrynane beach (and horseback riding there, with Eagle Rock Equestrian Center), and Derrynane House (home of the Liberator, Daniel O'Connell). We got THE BEST croissants in the world from Jane Urquhart, right up the drive at Westcove Bakery. It was wonderful.

Only an hour from Kenmare or Killarney, Pier Cottage is ideally located to explore Co Kerry - but beware, the roads are tiny and winding! Mostly, we preferred to stay home and just absorb the beauty of the place. Westcove harbor has many small fishing and sailboats, some go out daily. There are seals out from shore on a rock, so find the binoculars - they are cool!

We LOVE Pier Cottage and highly recommend it. It would be perfect for a family or larger family gathering (rent both ends). Although it is an hour's drive to larger cities, for those families that just want to absorb the beauty of Ireland, this is the place. There is plenty to do locally, and plenty to do in your own back yard here. I can't recommend this place highly enough - unlimited stars!

Pier Cottage is situated 15kms west of Sneem and 15 kms east of Watervillle (with its championship golfcourse ) overlooking the Kenmare Estuary in South Kerry - an ideal location from which to explore this magical part of Ireland.

You can row, fish and shrimp from rocks just by Pier Cottage; or go deep sea, lake or river fishing. In summer there is a fun watersports centre nearby; 5 excellent golf courses within 40 mins drive-see details below-, horseriding for all ages and endless beautiful walks.

There is plenty to see and do in and around Caherdaniel . Visit DERRYNANE HOUSE & NATIONAL PARK, ancestral home of one of Ireland’s leading historical figures, Daniel O’Connell known as 'The Liberator'. A 19th century politician, Daniel championed the cause of the Irish in the British parliament and succeeded in achieving Catholic Emancipation, his house and grounds’ have been preserved and are open to the public in the summer. The house is surrounded by spectacular sub-tropical gardens & the lovely tea-rooms have an irresistible selection of home-made cakes. Don’t forget to pick up a map of the ‘FAIRY TRAIL’ and see how many ‘fairy houses’ you can discover in the gardens! In Caherdaniel stop for a Guinness at Freddy’s – a well known local pub which has been there forever, or go to The Blind Piper – a younger atmosphere and excellent food. In summer, there’s a bustling indoor & outdoor market in the Community Centre between 10 and 12.30 on Friday mornings with lots of local produce and crafts. There is also an excellent food market on Sundays.

The largest, finest & arguably the best example of a pre-Christian ring fort in Ireland, Staigue Fort is less than 15 mins drive away. It is worth a visit, especially on a clear day, when the views out over the Atlantic are breathtaking. Even older than is is the Tetrapod track on Valentia...of international importance, this series of footprnts of a tetrapod is the first fossil record of an amphibian animal in the world.

A boat trip to Skellig Islands,a UNESCO World Heritage site is a must! Rising majestically from the sea, Skellig Michael towers 218m above sea level and on the summit of this awe-inspiring rock is you will find perfectly preserved beehive huts, part of a 6th century monastic settlement. On the spectacular Small Skelligs 23,000 pairs of gannets nest on every available ledge making it the second largest gannet colony in the world.

40 minutes drive west along the north coast of the beautiful Kenmare estuary, is the picturesque town of Kenmare itself, well-known for for its varied and tempting shops and teeming with excellent bars and restaurants ...a popular choice for the ladies, especially on Wednesdays when there is a lively market all year round selling everything from crafts and jewellery to a mouthwatering selection of cheeses, pates and other home made delicacies!

Drive south from Kenmare over spectacular mountain passes, to explore the Beara peninsula which has so much to offer visitors, from the imposing stately Bantry House, the sculpture park and a selection of beautiful gardens ...

A little further inland is the bustling town of Killarney with many lovely bars, restaurants, spas and of course its famous lakes and national park. Visit also the Gaelic speaking Dingle peninsula and take a trip to see Funghi - a wild bottlenose dolphin that has made the bay his home.

Wherever you are in Kerry you will find excellent and varied restaurants offering delicious seafood & quality local produce. The convivial atmosphere of the Irish pub is legendary & many serve great value home-cooked food. The whole family can be assured of a very warm welcome.Kerry people are known for their wit & stories... you will be drawn into conversation with the locals ....so enjoy making new friends, the 'craic' (fun) & stories ..and more stories!! Don't forget to catch a live music session some evening!

GOLF: Pier Cottage makes an ideal base for golfers wishing to play the legendary courses of the ‘Kingdom of Kerry’…. Use your own transport or a local minibus can be arranged to take you to any of the following courses – check their websites for details:

Within 25 mins drive – WATERVILLE – www.watervillegolflinks.ie – magnificent links course (always rated one of the top 10 in Ireland) – a must for serious golfers. SKELLIG BAY - www.skelligbay.com – a fairly new challenging course with breathtaking views over sea and lake – reasonable green fees. PARKNASILLA – www.parknasillahotel.ie - just east of Sneem – very scenic 12 hole course – fun for all the family.

Within 45 mins drive – RING OF KERRY – www.ringofkerrygolf.com – 18 holes with panoramic views over Kenmare Estuary – take a buggy unless you are a mountain goat! KENM
