Guestbook comments from the owner
Left on 10/23/2012 for a stay in October 2012

This place is absolutely fantastic. Located up on the North end of Kauai, it's a few minutes from Hanalei in one direction and the Na Pali coast in the other.

When you walk into the suite you're faced with this enormous curved lanai with incredible views of the Northern mountains. It's quite breathtaking. The suite is enormous, and the grounds are wonderfully quiet and peaceful.

We stayed there for a few days mid October, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and came home again completely relaxed. We wanted a self-catering apartment, because we wanted to sample the farmers markets and cook for ourselves, so it was important that the kitchen was fully stocked. There are fantastic beaches very close by (including the awesome tunnels beach) and you can borrow their beach equipment (snorkels, boogie boards etc.) too.

All in all a great place to stay.

NICEST ACCOMMODATIONS EVER!

  • 5 of 5
My wife & I both felt that the Moon Studio was the nicest accommodations we've ever stayed in anywhere -- and that's saying something as we've stayed on a barge in the Seine and in a cave B&B in the Loire Valley. It's a pretty remote location -- about halfway between Hanalei & the end of the road, near Wainiha Beach. The spacious marble-floored living room features a panoramic view of the jungle & mountains &, looking down, a pair of lotus ponds -- and at least twice during our stay, a magnificent rainbow. When we first walked in my wife actually thought this was like a hotel lobby & didn't realize it was part of our suite. And the window is screened, not glass, so you also get plenty of exotic bird sounds, which helps you feel you're sitting in the middle of the jungle. The other side of that coin is that you do also get a lot of non-exotic sounds too, like the ubiquitous roosters, dogs and, most unfortunately, power tools.

The view is the main draw here, but the amenities were all fine as well: kitchen, bath, laundry facilities, internet connectivity all worked just fine. Well, the gas range & hot water each had a brief outage, but we just had to let Ray or Leslie know & they promptly took care of it. Cell phone reception (AT&T & Verizon) was intermittent, but they did provide a working land line. They had on hand an excellent supply of snorkeling gear, beach mats & beach toys as well as tourist brochures and a comprehensive guide book. And our host, Ray, was very helpful with suggestions of places to visit etc.

So (except for the power tools) we couldn't have been happier with our stay in the Moon Studio and give it our highest recommendation.

Owner's Response: Wow, I'm so sorry that my work downstairs was annoying for these folks. I have been working on a project and tried to keep sounds muted, but apparently did not. I do not expect to be using power tools around house in future as the repair work will be done and I usually do not use them if any guest is home anyway, but I missed something here and apologize. Guaranteed, sounds like that are not typical here. This is not a construction zone.

AMAZING PLACE

  • 5 of 5
I've stayed on the N Shore before, but not in this area. I was astounded. The view is jaw-dropping, the living area is unique and beautiful. There are hard wood tree trucks going through the interior like a tree house. Loved it! We were high up above overlooking an incredible valley and mountain range. I rained some while we were there, but it was great hanging out in our hot tub sipping wine :) What a find. We found "our spot", and will be back. Thanks to Ray also, for giving us great tips on his must see places! Mahalo :)

NO HOT WATER :(

  • 3 of 5
The location, view and home were indeed beautiful, however we had no hot water for four of the seven days we stayed there, with the last day ending with ice cold showers in the morning. We complained to the cleaner about it and she reset it once but it didn't fix the problem.

The owner also sends you a long list of rules and restrictions after you book such as you can't wear shoes in the house and beware of ants etc. So make sure to read everything so you know what you're in for.

As another reviewer stated you are in the rainforest so expect the sounds of frogs and chickens and dogs. The noise made it difficult for my husband to sleep, but he is a light sleeper.

The cleaner Leslie is very sweet and the location and home are exceptionally beautiful which is why it still gets three stars.

Owner's Response: This was an odd way for the guests to communicate with us when they could have just called again about the water. Obviously we don't have hot tubs for cold water! Obviously, after ten years doing this we are aware that people like to come home from cold showers at the beach to hot showers at home. Obviously a solar water heating system was installed to create hot water :)

As far as the rules, they are all in the Frequently Asked Questions on our website, which guests are required to read before booking. I guess they didn't read it. In Hawaii, with heavy Japanese influence, shoes off is common, and because we really dissuade pesticides, we use windex instead to dissuade ants :) and in tropics there are ants because there is no winter kill from cold. And yes, Hawaii is tropical! This is a nature retreat, so if people are put off encountering the nature of the tropics, there are hotels that use pesticides regularly, but we absolutely do not. We have studied wireless dangers also, and if you the reader do not know about this, it is real problem easily searched online.

I didn't get to meet these folks, but there is something wondrous about this review. Other guests staying during the same time week, had no complaints and we even wrote to them to ask what they experienced I, son of the owner have moved back on to property as grounds keeper, so there won't be as many frogs or roosters to wake people, but there are always sounds from neighbors, from all kinds of animals, and in AM lots of birds. If hot water was a problem others would have mentioned it. There is some lack of deductive reasoning with this guest in my opinion and to diss a small business because of an apparent anomaly is not responsible. Imagine encountering a tree across a scenic route, and reporting to the world online that that route is only three star because of a fallen tree! Wondrous.

ENJOY THE TROPICS IN PARADISE IN THIS BEAUTIFUL, UNIQUE PROPERTY.

  • 4 of 5
If you like your dwelling to be surrounded by beautiful water creatures, exotic ponds full of colourful fish, waterlilies & amphibians known to enchant your nights, then this is the place for you! The views of the nearby pristine, mountain peaks were spectacular. Glimpses of an occasional magnificent rainbow topped it off!
We rate this special place to be amongst one of the 7 wonders of Kauai.
Everytime that we returned to the 'Lily Pad Suite' we had the feeling that we were coming back home. It was so welcoming, homey & comfortable. Home in Paradise!

LUSH TROPICAL SURROUNDINGS, BEAUTIFUL AND COMFORTABLE NORTH SHORE RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
We enjoyed six nights in the Lily Pad studio at the end of February. What a great break from the Alaskan winter! the location is as depicted in the listing photos and descriptions. The house is beautifully (and uniquely!) designed, with three units side-by-side, with separate entries and privacy for each. Some days it was hard to want to leave the place, it is so pleasant and has such a lovely setting. But there is much to see and do in the area.
We love going to Hanalei Bay's beaches to watch the surfers and walk the long sandy beach; Lumahai Beach, which is a very short drive away, to sit and watch and feel the pounding waves (not for swimming); and the end of the road at the beginning of the Kalaulau Trail for hiking is also nearby. The Kilauea Lighthouse and Anini Beach are about 20 to 25 minutes away, and the views from the lookouts descending back into Hanalei from those places are incredible, all postcards in the making.
We've stayed in Kapaa and Poipu and always wanted to spend more time on the North Shore, and we're glad we did. The nights are not silent, but we were quite amused by the bullfrogs, geckos, and chickens--bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. If you want to cook serious meals, you may prefer the Moon one-bedroom unit's kitchen, but for us Lily Pad, and the awesome jacuzzi on the lanai, were a delight. And, the property caretaker and contact, Lesley, was always helpful and a joy to meet. Thanks Lesley, we hope to see you again!

OUTSTANDING!

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful stay for a week at the Dawn Studio. It was very clean and we found a beautiful, large tropical flower bouquet from the garden on the dining room table upon arrival, such a pleasure (thanks, Lesley!). We were surrounded by tropical greenery, ponds, jungle critter noises at night, including roosters. The view from the studio is towards steep mountains (back side of Napali coast).
