Coqui Inn

My girlfriend & I stayed at Coqui Inn last week for four nights. It is a nice, clean little studio apartment that is a good place for the price. It's part of a large house & owners Beth & Ray are really nice. Beth runs a gift shop in Cruz Bay where we found some good suvies for friends back home. It has a private patio for dinner or cocktails after a long day of snorkeling etc. The two backpack style beach chairs proved excellent for hiking to remote beaches with all of our gear. The only issue is that the properties along the little Dittlif point road have all recently been posted private. We drove down there & could find NO beach access to Fish Bay or Rendezvous Bay beaches. This is a huge bummer & should be illegal as VI beaches are public by law. Unfortunately the law says they're public only up to high water mark, so land owners can essentially block access by buying up the land above high water. Those beaches are now only accessible by water. They should have made provision for right of way between lots, but alas the VI gov't is fairly challenged in many regards. The good news is there is local access to beautiful, secluded Reef Bay. Drive east on Marina Rd, then go left on Reef Bay rd. Park on right shoulder by the cliffs & look for the trailhead on the left next to a pole with power meter. Hike down the STEEP trail & enjoy a unique, natural, uncrowded place. Anyway, Coqui Inn has no real views & you have to drive to get anywhere, but is great if you're looking for a decent, affordable, private, quiet, place to call home on beautiful Saint John!
