About Craig Winnie

I first found Grand Marais in 1994 and it was love at first site on my way down the hill into Grand Marais. I relocated here shortly after and purchased Sunset Cabins in 1997. I am an avid hiker, biker and cross country skier.

Craig Winnie purchased this house in 1997

Why Craig Winnie chose Grand Marais

I was drawn to the cabins and property and kept my eye on them until they came up for sale in 1997. They were built in the late 30s and were in need of major renovations. I restored them all with a traditional to the area cedar shingle siding and wood interiors. The Lodge was my dream home started in 2003 and finally finished in 2007. My family is now grown and it's time to downsize back into my smaller old home

What makes this house unique

Four years went into the making of this home from the stairway to the board and baton Master bedroom to the wrap around porch. This is great home for the larger family

Winter wonderland

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful home was the perfect location for our annual snowmobile vacation. It is very clean and well kept. The amenities were great after a long day of riding. There was plenty of parking for our large trucks and trailers. Trail access was not on site, but was only about 1 mile away which was ok since the roads were mostly snow covered. The owner is great to deal with. I would recommend this place to anyone and will definitely be back for another vacation. Thank you Craig for sharing your home with us!

Fantastic weekend

  • 5 of 5

We had 2 couples stay at the lodge for a long weekend. The location was fantastic, and the house was excellent! Very large and spacious, very up north feel, and all the amenities for a relaxing stay. The house is in great proximity to all the must see places as well. We loved the house and our stay, and will definitely be staying there again!

LOVED THE LODGE!!!

  • 5 of 5

Three couples from Ohio stayed at the Lodge for one week in Sept. 2014. This place is well kept, beautiful and has everything you could want or need on vacation! All is very clean, comfortable beds, beautiful and sturdy furniture. The porch is amazing!! Thank you for a great time!!! Does have lots of steps if that's a problem. We are all in our 50's and 60's and didn't bother us.

Amazing views

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the lodge!! The owner was very prompt in answering all my many questions! The house had plenty of towels, sheets, pillows and extra bedding. All the rooms are quite big and easily fit a pack n play and/or a cot for our small children. Most importantly all the beds were very comfortable!! Our bedframe was a bit noisy but bed itself was very nice! The kitchen was well equipped only thing lacking was coffee grinder and only a few bowls. We knew ahead of time and brought our grinder, there was a very nice blender!! There was lots of outdoor seating and tables on the wrap around deck! The washer and dryer were nice for all the kids beach wear and multiple outfit changes. The walk to beach is about 15 minutes w kids under 5, which was fine for us as the kids loved the adventure walk to beach! You can also drive around and it's only a 5 min walk to water. There is also a nice beach in town only 1.5 miles that has a playground and easy parking. We can not say enough about the lovely time we had:) in town there is a nice bakery, diner and brewery as well as pictured rocks a short drive away!!!

Highly recommend the Lodge at Sunset Cabins

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed as a family of 9 in the Lodge the week of July 4th. The group included grandparents through pre-teens. The accommodations at the Lodge were excellent. There was plenty of room for everyone to spread out and have space. The house was very clean and well maintained. It had any/all necessities you might require for your stay. This included clean bedding/towels and all your required cooking/kitchen needs. We also had a great gas grill at our disposal for BBQ. It is located just outside of Grand Marais and is an easy drive to all of the various waterfalls and sites throughout Pictured Rocks to the west and Tahquamenon Falls State Park to the east. Or you can simply take a short 5 minute walk to basically your own private beach on Lake Superior or a short paddle boat ride would get you there as well. The owner of the property was extremely nice/friendly and always very helpful with suggestions on things to do. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to go back in the near future. We highly recommend this place!

Great place for families in a fantastic area

  • 5 of 5

The Lodge at Sunset Cabins is a great place in a fantastic location. The Lodge is a large, clean, nicely furnished home with plenty of room for 2+ families. The owner is friendly and very easy to work with. The resort is quiet and pleasant. The beach is right in front of the resort and is a short walk around a pond, or you can take a paddle boat across. The beach is sandy and the water is clear and beautiful. We swam and boated in Grand Marais harbor daily. Grand Marais is a beautiful area and there were tons of great things to do to keep the 7 pre-teens/teenagers in our families busy and having great time. Pictured Rocks lakeshore is nearby to the west, with lots of beaches, hikes, falls, and great sights. There are also miles of public of beach to the east towards Deer Park. We took day trips to Munising and Whitefish Point. We made a trip to Crisp Point Lighthouse and loved it - totally restored lighthouse that you can go up in, surrounded by beautiful beach and dunes. We had a great time here and would definitely come back again.
