Photos and Description of the Mount Shasta vacation lodge rental
Lodge, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible Bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 6-7)

Mount Shasta Family Lodge is designed for long-term living and perfect for those wanting to stay monthly or longer. It’s ideal for artists, writers, photographers, or anyone seeking the peace, quiet and inspiration of the mountains. Here’s where you feel a new youthful vigor after freeing yourself from the confusion and noise of stop-and-go traffic in the city.

Why choose to stay in the mountains longer than a few days? You’ll learn why people choose to live up here permanently after seeing Mount Shasta's snow-covered peaks from the deck of our lodge. It's a million-dollar view! It's when your Mount Shasta experience begins.

Being here easily explains why the sight of California's most famous 14,179-foot high peak thrills everyone from wide-eyed children to rugged mountaineers and U.S. presidents.

Why fly thousands of miles away to the Swiss Alps when you can stay at our unique European-styled, two-story, three-bedroom Mount Shasta Family Lodge. Since it’s located on a pristine acre of a former meadow and surrounded by mountain views in every direction, you’ll easily assume you’ve moved into in a chalet of ancient Europe that’s been upgraded for modern living.

Children make a wonderful discovery seeing the mountains for the first time and then returning year after year because in wilderness you never lose being young in heart. Here's where every child is inspired to start asking the kind of questions that takes each of them to college and beyond.

All proceeds from the Mount Shasta Family Lodge go into a California 529 College Savings Plan that provides scholarships for qualified persons desiring to go to college as administered by trustees Gordon & Darlene A Greb.

While in the mountains, you’ll be living comfortably and at ease with central heating and air conditioning. In addition, you'll be able to use a wood burning stove in the living room or wall panel electrical heaters in upstairs and downstairs bathrooms and bedrooms.

The lodge accommodates up to seven persons. There are two bedrooms upstairs served by a bathroom with tub and shower and there's a third bedroom ensuite downstairs.

The master bedroom sleeps a couple in a queen-sized bed and the adjacent guest room serves another pair in a standard double. In addition a pullout couch in the living room can be turned into a bed for a seventh person.

A third bedroom downstairs has a king-sized bed easily fitting two more with exclusive bathroom and shower.

Our upstairs kitchen, next to the dining room, features a modern refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher and electric cooker. You'll find a large screen TV in the cathedral-ceilinged Great Room, and all of the bedrooms connect to cable TVs with DVD or VCR players. The master bedroom also features a complete stereo sound system with radio, phonograph, and cassette player.

Altogether this two-story structure occupies nearly 1900 square feet of living space and is ideally situated to give you a million dollar view of Mt Shasta itself from the upstairs living room and outside deck.

We have a two-car garage in a building that nestles among other beautifully styled homes on one-acre lots where each has tremendous views of tree-covered mountains in every direction.

Winter brings skiing to the slopes of Mt Shasta and summer attracts fishing, boating, and swimming in nearby lakes. Youngsters always enjoy visiting the state fish hatchery which is five minutes away.

You can bike to the town center (abut one mile and a half distant) or take the four-lane interstate freeway (Highway 5) south to San Francisco or north to Portland, Oregon. Fine restaurants are in our picturesque village as well as neighboring towns (Dunsmuir, 6 miles; Weed, 8 miles).

Good local public transportation connects neighboring towns. But to save time an automobile is advisable. Amtrak passenger trains stop at Dunsmuir; Greyhound serves us from Weed. It's advisable for travelers arriving by air to continue their San Francisco flight to Redding Airport (one hour away) where a car can be picked up.

Driving time from San Francisco to Mount Shasta (4 1/2 hrs); Chico (2 1/2 hrs); Redding (1 hr.); and Ashland, Oregon (1 1/4 hrs).

When you're in sight of one of California's most spectacular and highest peaks -- Mount Shasta -- you'll always be glad that you’ve been here.

About Gordon Greb

We’re native Californians – a university professor and kindergarten teacher – who began “roughing it” as hikers and backpackers when our children were young and made a wonderful discovery...... It was that once we left city life for the wilderness we found a new school for the young in heart......The great outdoors not only opened our eyes to nature’s soul-lifting environment but it also inspired us to capture its beauty as artists, writers, and photographers. Here we were able to to hike into the high country, swim in fresh mountain steams, fish at the headwaters of the Sacramento River, and explore nature’s bounty to our heart’s delight. Then after a day of high adventure, easily return to the comforts of what we now call Mount Shasta Family Lodge. Since Mount Shasta is the place that’s inspired everyone from poets to presidents, we invite you to come see for yourself what this Mount Shasta experience is all about.

Gordon Greb purchased this lodge in 1999
Why Gordon Greb chose Mount Shasta

Everyone seems to have a dream. Ours was to live here someday. For many years, my wife Darlene and I would drive north from San Francisco on vacation and see this beautiful snowcapped mountain way off in the distance. On a clear day its white peak would be poking its head into the sky from fifty to seventy-five miles away. The mountain urged us on through increasingly beautiful landscapes

WHEN WE FINALLY ARRIVED at its base (elevation 3000 feet), it was always a thrill to step out of the car in the little City of Mount Shasta (pop. 3,200) to breath the fresh mountain air, drink its crystal clear water, and smell the perfume of its trees and flowers. Japanese tourists have come here by charter bus to see this sight because it reminds them of Mt. Fuji at home. MOUNT SHASTA IS THE SOURCE of the great Sacramento River which reaches all the way down to San Francisco. Tiny drops of melting snow trickle down the sides of Mount Shasta and collect themselves into larger and larger streams of water which eventually grow into the mighty torrent that flows all the way to thirsty citizens of great cities below. Because of its glacier there's always snow on its peak, whether in spring, summer, fall, or winter. Everytime my wife and I saw Mt Shasta we said to ourselves, 'Wouldn't it be wonderful to live here.' .

WHEN IT FINALLY HAPPENED in 1999 that we could do it, we jumped at the chance to acquire this Mount Shasta European-style alpine house. We loved its simple two-story design, natural wood, and setting on one acre alongside tall pines and lodge pole trees nearby.

Great place for an eye-opening visit

4 of 5
Submitted: February 17, 2013 Stayed: September 2012
Our visit to Mt. Shasta was a real eye-opener. It is an area not well-known to visitors from Europe, such as my wife and I, who tend to confine our trips to California to the area between San Francisco and Los Angeles. We found the town is surrounded by spectacular scenery. It also has all the attractions of a small town, with a downtown that has not been killed by out-of-town shopping centres and chain stores.

The property is in a quiet location but is close to downtown and all its facilities. It is also close to other out-of-town attractions such as the trains at McCloud. The house is comfortable and well-maintained. I would certainly recommend it to friends, family and anyone who wants a great place to stay in a very scenic and interesting part of California. Like us, you will never forget the view from the deck looking towards Mt. Shasta.

Perfect view of mount shasta, kids friendly

5 of 5
Submitted: February 3, 2013 Stayed: November 2012
My family spent a long weekend here, we were amazed by the view of the snow capped mount shasta on reaching the place - the sunset added a orange glow to the snow which was very beautiful.

The house was well kept, the rooms were spacious. There was a lot of open space outside the house, kids had a great time playing there.

The next day we went to the lava beds national monument which is less than couple of hours drive from there. The caves are great and they even couple of caves which were accessable to kids. This is a must do if going to mount shasta.

We initially took the road going through McCloud which leads to the lava beds. Not sure if this road is closed during winters but 30-40 miles on this road we were pretty much the only ones on the road and then there was snow on the roads. We went 10 more miles and then had to turn around since the snow was getting thicker and we were not sure what we were getting into. We parked on the road there and the kids had a lot of fun in the snow - this turned out to be one of the very memorable things about this trip. Try this road if you are adventurous.

Overall, great place to stay, great outdoors to enjoy.

Owner's Response: Mount Shasta visitors often say our lodge is ideal for children because of its spacious outdoor play area and expansive well kept lawns. Visiting the lava beds by car also is well worth while.

A great relaxing stay

Submitted: February 2, 2013 Stayed: August 2012
My wife and I stayed here on a leisurely trip around Northern California. The house was pleasant, well equipped with a spectacular view of Mt. Shasta. The town has a wonderful, friendly atmosphere with a city park that features a spring that is the beginning of the Sacramento River. Hiking, fishing and boating are all available nearby. I highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: Once you're here you'll agree that to say our lodge has a "million dollar view" of Mount Shasta is no an exaggeration.
