About Mrs. J Huston

After many years of traveling and latterly working in Geneva, we chose this area as we loved France and the variety of life. Our location gives us easy access to all directions, transportation local and international, tranquility and a home to share with our many visitors friends and family.

Mrs. J Huston purchased this farmhouse in 1989
Why Mrs. J Huston chose Tulette

We had friends in this area who also had children of the same age. We looked for something to give us the peace of the countryside, but easy access to cultural activities, markets, and all that we love about France.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Our views from every window are spectacular at all times of year. The bare vines and trees in winter are beautiful, the autumn colors surround us with a golden glow, spring brings the freshness of the vines coming alive once again and summer the warmth and beauty of outdoor living.

Fabulous farmhouse in the Cotes du Rhone

We had a wonderful week at La Barraliere during the Easter holidays. It is a beautiful, spacious house and very well equipped, especially the kitchen and dining area, with good flexible accommodation. We have young children who were delighted with the trampoline in the garden and the space outside that they could run around in (for hours on end!). For the adults, a glass of wine at the end of the day on the terrace overlooking the vineyards is heavenly. The house is a good walk to the nearby village (around 1.5 miles) so a car is necessary. The local village had all the amenities we needed - shops, restaurants (we would recommend La Roue a Aubes (http://www.laroueaaubes.com/) which does lovely pizzas in the evening! Plenty of local markets to explore (with a list in the kitchen they are easy to locate - we can recommend the market in Vaison la Romaine on a Tuesday), long walks or bicycle rides in the countryside as well as the many many caves to sample the local wine in. Avignon is a very pretty and historic town within easy reach - worth a day there. We had a fabulous holiday here and are looking forward to the next visit, would highly recommend a stay.

charming, spacious house set amid vineyards in every direction

My wife, two-year old daughter and I spent three full weeks at La Barraliere this past September, with several day trips and a few overnight trips interspersed throughout. The house is situated between two very small towns - Visan and Tulette - a little less than a mile to either one. These towns offered great bread, an extraordinary butcher, and good farmers markets. The Cotes du Rhone "wine road" area that includes Gigondas was a 15-minute drive. It was also easy to access Mont Ventoux, Vaison la Romaine, and the Ardeche region (slightly further as you have to cross the Rhone river and highway). We also took trips to Marseille and Aix en Provence - both were an hour and a half drive south, so fairly close. Avignon was only 45 minutes drive. The owners also operate a contemporary artist residency and gallery on the property, and have information and connections to a lot of local artists and galleries. The walls of the house and connecting apartment are hung with interesting abstract paintings that added a lot of warmth and personality to the place. There are windows all around the house looking out to the vineyards (which literally surround the house on all sides) and to Mont Ventoux in the distance. It's an airy, yet cozy house.

Overall, the house exceeded our expectations, and was a good homebase for exploring the area. Not knowing a lot about how it would work out with a two-year old, we found it to be safe, spacious and well-suited for children. There is a big yard, an wide-open courtyard, a garden, a trampoline, and a few boxes of toys. The only downside might be that you would want a car to more easily explore the area and go back and forth to the two nearby towns for basic provisions. Both towns are easily walkable and bike-able (there are a couple bikes available at the house) but we had to drive most of the time because we didn't bring a kid seat for the bike. Very minor complaint!

An Idyllic Spot in Provence

La Barraliere is truly a special place. It is a lovely old stone farmhouse surrounded by vineyards on all sides. It has incredibly lovely views, including of the Mt. Ventoux in the distance. It is conveniently located near so many wonderful places to visit, Orange, with its Roman arch and ampitheater, Vaison la Romaine with its Roman ruins, the charming town of St. Cecile de Vignes, and so many beautiful drives through the spectacular Cotes du Rhone valley. The area never feels touristy, the food, scenery, and local wines are all wonderful, and the entire experience of staying there is peaceful and idyllic--truly like a dream.
