The unique design of the Bunkhouse provides a convenient layout for families, couples, and small groups of friends. The cottage is one large room where the dining and sleeping areas are in an open space with a view of the cozy gas fireplace. This home away from home is a fully furnished, tastefully appointed retreat. You can relax and enjoy the spa bubbles in the Bunkhouses' private outdoor hot tub tucked away in our beautiful backyard garden.
A few short years ago, I decided to open the Bunkhouse. When I was looking around the area, I found plenty of fancy B&B's, noisy roadside motels, basic hotel chains, and lots of different kinds of weekly rental properties. Don't get me wrong, all of them were very nice, but none of them fit my vision of a perfect place that I would want to spend a week with family or friends. I was looking for the solitude and comfort of my own private retreat. I wanted a place where I could (if I had any) let my hair down. I wanted a place where I could knock the sand off my feet after a day at the beach, sip a glass (or two) of fine local wine, and relax in a private hot tub. I wanted a place that let me be me without having to conform to someone Else's standard of what a 'vacation' should look like. I wanted a place where I could choose how I wanted to unwind.
I've turned the Bunkhouse into exactly the place I was looking for! It's a casual, comfortable, relaxing retreat from the stress of everyday life. The Bunkhouse is an attitude as much as it's a destination... and that's exactly my intention! Everything about the Bunkhouse says, 'Relax, kick back, and slow down for a few days.'
Now, don't misunderstand me. To me, casual comfort doesn't mean 'sloppy mess.' I take an enormous amount of pride in what I've created in the Bunkhouse. The space is beautifully appointed with plush bedding including fine cotton sheets, overstuffed pillows, and down comforters. The kitchen is fully updated and modern. I've filled it with touches of home including tasteful dishes, fine stemware, and matching utensils. The outdoor hot tub is sanitized and prepared for each visit. I even supply beach towels and chairs for your trip to the beach.
The Bunkhouse is the picture of MY ideal Saugatuck vacation retreat. I LOVE this place. Because I know that if I wouldn't love staying here, why would you?
Saugatuck's primary source of revenue stems from tourism - though only 1,000 individuals call Saugatuck their year-round home, the population of the town swells to nearly 3,000 in the summer. Saugatuck is a prime summer weekend getaway destination for residents of Chicago, Grand Rapids and Detroit areas and many guests are attracted to the many Bed and Breakfasts in the area.
In 2010, Saugatuck came in fourth in Budget Travel Magazine's ten coolest towns in America.
In town, attractions include the many art galleries (over a dozen), small, independent shops, and restaurants, such as the Butler (named after the founder of the town, William Butler), Marro's Italian Restaurant, The Elbo Room, Coral Gables, and the Mermaid Bar & Grill. The Saugatuck Chain Ferry departs from Wicks Park, near the Star of Saugatuck, a large paddle-wheel boat that gives daily tours of the Kalamazoo River and Lake Michigan.
There are art and music festivals throughout the year.
Other attractions include the nearby town of Douglas, Saugatuck's sister city, and the above mentioned Oval Beach. Saugatuck's historic churches contribute to a vibrant community while preserving some of the oldest buildings in town. The oldest of these churches is First Congregational Church, founded in 1860.
Since the 1970s the Saugatuck and neighboring Douglas have been popular as a tourist destination for gay and lesbian tourists from the Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Grand Rapids area as well as other Midwestern urban areas. It has even been nicknamed by some as the Provincetown of the Midwest.
