Located in a residential location, two minutes stroll from the centre of the pretty little market town of Hourtin, is this lovely 3 bedroom villa, set in a good size plot with private swimming pool and garden. Spacious and comfortable, this is the perfect base from which to explore the local lakes (2 minute drive to Hourtin lake, 15 minutes to stunning Maubuisson), the never ending beaches of France's Atlantic coast (10 minute drive) or the world famous vineyards of the Medoc (20 minutes and you are at Chateau Lafite). The surrounding area is perfect for walking, cycling, water sports, or eating and drinking - whatever you enjoy. The house is fully equipped with all you'd expect and is child friendly. 45 minutes drive from Bordeaux (Merignac) Airport, Hourtin is a beautiful little town with all the necessary shops. A larger range of shops and the big supermarkets are located 15 minutes away in Lesparre, and the surrounding towns/villages offer unlimited opportunities to explore.

The region of France surrounding Bordeaux has the largest production of fine wine in the world. If you are into wine, then you'll know the likes of Lafite, Mouton Rothschild, Margaux and Latour, and if you plan ahead you can book into these grand Chateaux for a tour and tasting. However, it's also fun discovering the vineyards that aren't so well known. The best place to start is the Maison du Tourisme et Vin in Pauillac about 20 minutes from Hourtin - it's near to the river and well signposted. They often hold tastings and can book you into different vineyards. Other suggestions for day trips out include the busier surf beaches at Lacanau Ocean, the pretty resorts around the Bassin d''Arcachon where there is also a fantastic water park and the enormous sand dune at Pyla or, for some culture, Bordeaux itself.

Hourtin is a pretty little market town in France with everything that one needs (it's a two minute stroll from the house to pick up the daily baguette). Three bars, three restaurants, a butcher, baker, organic grocer, two caves (wine shops), a newsagent, two small supermarkets (and now a new Aldi), a bank and an excellent market each Thursday (also Tuesday and Saturday through summer). A short car journey or bike ride takes you to the lake at Hourtin Port with its excellent watersports, the car-free Ile Aux Enfants with its play and picnic areas plus bars and restaurants at the marina. A short drive, or for the more energetic a safe cycle ride along marked trails, takes you to the beautiful white sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast. Head inland and you are in the heart of the world's most famous premium wine region, with one famous chateau after another rolling by. Try the local Pauillac lamb with some fine claret (ask at the caves or look in the supermarkets - it's tremendous value).

Notes: The garden is perfect for outdoor dining with wooden garden furniture and a large teak dining table, shaded under a beautiful tree. There are 4 sun loungers for the sunny patio or poolside plus reclining chairs and deckchairs. There are 2 adult and 2 children’s bikes, plus body and skim boards for the beach and a windsurfer for the lake. The lake is shallow and very warm in the summer, making it an ideal place to swim or safely learn new water sports. Equipment ranging from canoes and windsurfers to catamarans can be hired at Hourtin Port and you can also learn to kite surf in a reserved area 2 km to the south at Lachanau.

Great property

We were looking for a spacious, well equipped house with a pool and close to beaches in which we could holiday with our 2 young (3 and 1) children and potentially a set of grandparents. We knew the area and had decided that Hourtin would be a good spot in which to base ourselves.

The house is an easy walk from town (5 minutes with a buggy), and the town has everything you may need, from 4 bakeries (!) to a butchers, a supermarket and a hardware store. A quick drive gets you to bigger shops/supermarket. The town also has bars and a couple of restaurants for when you want to eat out but don't want to drive. The house is also a short drive from lovely lake beaches and from the sea and there is plently to do locally. So, location-wise it is ideal for a family holiday.

The house itself is one of the nicest we have stayed in - everything is well maintained and in good order. Little things like having enough crockery, plastic stuff for the children, some toys and games, DVDs and CDs really made a difference. It was also delightful to arrive somewhere and find milk and a bottle of wine in the fridge - just the thing after a long drive!! The garden is super-safe for children and is completely enclosed, so they could run around and play on the swing while we had a sit down. And the pool was a real bonus - we didn't use it lots as the beaches are nice, but it was great when we did.

The area is good for cycling and the bikes at the house were in great condition - we have stayed in placed before where they've been a bit ropey, so it was good to have decent bikes. We brought our own child seats as our children are young. There is also lots of beach equipment to use which saved us buying another Disney Princess bucket and spade!!

With this house, we got just what we were looking for and will go back again. The grandparents couldn't come in the end, but the house would have been great for them too. It's lovely and has a great home from home feel to it.

Fantastic Holiday house

This property lived up to all expectations. Our group was Grandparents down to our 18month old. All ages well catered for with bikes, beach gear, including buckets and spades, wind surfers etc. All baby equipment, including toys, bath toys, high chair, portacot.

Great little town, short walk to the three or four patisseries, general store, wine shops and other necessary shops. Warm, safe and shallow great for little ones. Ocean Beach about 10 minutes. Beautiful sandy and safe.

You only need to pack clothes and toiletries. Even bath towels included.

Would love to return!

This is a clean, comfortable and very well equipped holiday home. It is perfect for a family hoiday, with the lovely pool and a large garden with swings for the kids. The owners have provided a range of extras (a barbecue, windsurfers, bikes etc) for guest to use. We cannot recommend it highly enough.

Hourtin village has excellent facilities, including a top class wine shop with a most agreeable patron! The port and beach are both superb and easily accesible.

An amazing house that is a home from home

We arrived on a sunday and in typical french style everything was closed. Down near the port however we found a great little pizzeria so we had a few glasses of vino and some dinner. They also ahve a great kids menu. When we arrived at the house we realised we neednt have bothered as the owners had left loads to make a dinner and a bottle of wine. It was a very nice welcome. If you have young kids (any age really) this house is ideal. Its very close to an amazing surf beach in Hourtin Plage and a beautiful lake with beach in Hourtin Port. My kids adored the lake it is so safe and calm. The pool is clean and fairly good size. The house is very spacious and very clean and well equipped, nicely decorated and very safe. An amazing log fire is central to the house. Not once did I 'need' anything as the house is so well equipped. The village itself has some great little restaurants and a bar and typically french ...loads of bakeries. We are going back for sure. Its ideally located from Bordeaux auirport. Easy to get to and from. To be honest. I can find ZERO complaints about this house. It can be very windy...so be warned...wind can take your mobile phone into the swimming pool:-)
