Huelo Cottage Rental Photos and Description
Studio Cottage, Centrally Located
Private and clean; green and off-the-grid 200 sq-ft cottage adjacent to jungle, natural pools, waterfalls and all the North Shore goodness. Just 30 minutes from the airport, and 15-20 from Paia Town, Haiku, Makawao and a dozen great uncrowded North Shore beaches. Earthy, peaceful and private; perfect for couples and a solid value.
The Studio cottage is a 200 sq-ft one room cottage with a queen bed, table, kitchentte, small deck, and private yard with outdoor space. It is a perfect accommodation for active people who plan on day-tripping around our beautiful island and want a serene natural place to make home-base for their adventures.
About five minutes down a narrow, windy, bumpily paved jungle road (any car can navigate it.) The area is largely undeveloped, but it is also not an isolated grass hut in the backcountry jungle!
This kind of lodging is perfect for nature lovers. While there is a ton of diversity in flora and fauna, the land is not heavily landscaped and this is the jungle – so stuff grows like…well…a jungle! (If things like the lawn getting tall between cuttings is something that horrifies you, well, we can show you loads of more tamed and manicured places!)
The cottage is environmentally designed with solar power, rainwater catchment & green/repurposed construction. The house was also designed and positioned to catch tradewinds and natural light perfectly. The private outdoor jungle shower is a guest favorite that we continually hear rave reviews about when we follow up with guests.
Tap water comes from rainwater catchment. This is a giant tank of rain water. It is crystal clear and regularly treated to sanitary specifications, so washing dishes, toothbrushing, etc. are all fine – though drinking it may be reserved for more adventurous folks! (Guests are provided with a large pitcher of filtered drinking water to start off at checkin.)
The quality bath towels, linens, comforter and pillows are replaced very frequently to be keep in new condition. There is also wireless internet, wireless VoIP telephone and a CD player w/iPod Dock & small selection of excellent Hawaiian music provided.
The kitchenette has a solid granite countertop and is equipped with a simple two-burner propane camping stove. Propane is provided. The kitchenette is also fully stocked with quality dishes, glassware, tableware, pots, pans, microwave, toaster-oven, coffee maker and fridge.
There is a main house on the property, and the Studio Cottage is tucked away in its own private corner. Solo travelers will appreciate that the main house and friendly neighbors live on adjacent properties – so other people are close enough that you won’t feel isolated. Residents in the main house are very conscious of guests and while you may see children playing, or otherwise be aware of the family presence, no one will intrude upon your personal space.
The cottage overlooks tropical plants, coconut, pineapple, ginger, hibiscus and heliconia are plentiful.
Bathroom & Hot Shower
The bathroom is simple yet functional with just a standard toilet. The sink is in the kitchenette. A stepping-stone path leads behind the cottage to an outdoor bamboo shower (yes, it has hot water!) nestled among mango, awapuhi ginger, heliconia, ‘ape (elephant ear) and ferns. We hear from guests regularly that just love this shower, and we’re sorry to tell you that after you shower here, you’ll probably never look at showering inside the same again :)
Very close to Twin Falls, a couple miles into the unofficial start of the famous Road to Hana, at the edge of the rainforest. Since Maui is small, and the resort areas are not centrally located, this private and “remote” area is ironically quite central for active people looking to experience the huge variety Maui has to offer.
The Jungle Studio Cottage is a great choice for those who want privacy, serenity and a peaceful off the beaten tourist path place to base their adventures around Maui.
These are our favorite of the uncrowded, non-touristy North Shore beaches. Once you've been to these miles of serene uncrowded beaches, going to hotel beaches seems silly :)

I'm an author and live in another home on the property. I discovered Maui was my soul's long-lost home in the 90's and whenever we came back home to visit, we found this area to be the best home base for our adventures around the island. When we moved to Maui in 2004, we spent three years searching for the perfect place, renting and moving five times to feel out different areas before we found the perfect location in 2007. We have had hundreds of thrilled visitors over these years, and hope to add you as one too!
The location is perfect for our active family of six. We can walk out our door and be swimming in waterfall pools or hiking jungle in minutes. We can drive to a dozen beautiful uncrowded beaches in 15-20 minutes. All the rest of this spectacularly perfect island is an easy reach.
Being an author and with four active kids - we're all over Maui, all the time. Having this location as our home base has been perfect for our busy family because it allows us to experience living in the serenity of the true, natural Hawaii while still being within easy reach of everything the island has to offer.
