About David Schroedl

La Jolla resident for 40 years. Retired La Jolla residential real estate broker. Legend status with Prudential California Real Estate. Former real estate developer. Three degrees from MIT.

David Schroedl purchased this house in 2004

Why David Schroedl chose La Jolla

One of the very few redwood and glass mid-century modern homes in La Jolla. Rich redwood texture. Updated with high quality touches. Extremely high quality furniture. Super-high speed internet. Enjoy the romance of soft lighting with Lutron dimming on almost all the lighting.

Vistas or ocean views from all rooms!

Enjoy all the advantages of Apple TV including ability to view NETFLIX and all your photos and video on the 65' TV screen. Relax on the Rouche-Bobois couch and lounge chair or on the zero gravity Human Touch 'Perfect Chair' featuring tempurpedic foam.

JUST A GREAT PLACE TO RELAX.

For computer use, six foot glass topped 'desk' in FR with two Knoll office chairs. For dining, tables and chairs for ten (twelve when using the office chairs).

See: theWoodHouseLaJolla.com for 60+ high-definition photographs of the property!

What makes this house unique

Enjoy being indoors with the feeling of being one with nature. Glass just disappears into the ceilings and many of the walls. YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE OUTDOORS WHILE INSIDE THE HOME. Eight huge skylights bath the home with light while the cedar roof overhang providing natural sun control. Two of the skylights in the bathroom area are ventilating.

And speaking of ventilation, with operative sliding glass windows next to the ceiling in all rooms, catch the ocean breezes and enjoy SUPER cross ventilation. That ventilation eliminates all the hot air that typically rises to the ceiling and creates higher interior than exterior temperatures. No need for mechanical airconditioning nor is any featured. ENJOY LA JOLLA'S FANTASTIC WEATHER WHILE INSIDE YOUR HOME!

Although there is little need for it, enjoy radiant hot water heat in the floors on those cooler winter nights.

Wonderful huge patios and much lush vegetation. Extreme privacy.

Note: Door clearances are 6'2' to 6'3'.

Spring Break

  • 5 of 5

This property is even more impressive in person than it is in the photos. Davis gave us a thorough overview of the property's amenities when we arrived and was very welcoming. There was ample sleeping space for our group of 12 and the house was an ideal location to spend our spring break, especially considering its close proximity to the beach. The viewing platform is amazing and the large amount of patio space was perfect for hanging out outside.

A perfect way to enjoy La Jolla

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful, landmark house with a unique and unmatched outdoor spaces.

As other reviewers mention, the house is near a busy road. However most of the house's outdoor and living space faces a courtyard where you won't hear the traffic or feel a part of the hustle and bustle. The large driveway also insulates any view of the road, however, from some rooms noise is audible - a swishing at night - but many others are completely noise free, as are the patio's and outdoor spaces.

The deck gives a nice morning and evening view of the beach, and the patio is smartly constructed to have shade when needed and ample space for grilling a barbecue. I particularly enjoyed the showers in the house, which sports beautiful granite tops in the kitchen and living room, in addition to a smart mid-century aesthetic and modern amenities like a large smart TV, etc/

From the busy road on the outside, it is a five minute walk to the scenic vistas of La Jolla, and the driveway has room for at least 3-4 cars. The house is ideal for those looking for a private space where they might want spend a significant amount time, even if the beaches and hiking of La Jolla are the primary attraction.

Strongly recommend.

Stunning residence

  • 5 of 5

We are currently staying at the Wood House and it has been the perfect accommodations for our family reunion. After reading the reviews regarding the traffic situation, I was concerned since we have several members of our family with physical limitations (fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, etc) as well as small children staying & visiting between the ages of 1 and 11. On check in, I was relieved when the host David not only explained how to cross the street but physically walked me across the street to demonstrate. There are traffic signals further up and down the road which provide a natural break in traffic every minute. There is a middle divide where you can safely stand after walking across the first two lanes of traffic. This morning I walked across with the kids in tow and it was easy and safe as long as you have a little patience to wait for the break. But even then, crossing the street was less than a minute and coming back with busier traffic less than 2 minutes. The kids LOVED the proximity to the beach and we LOVED being able to walk everywhere easily & let them run around the beach so their boundless energy was expended and the adults were able to have a nice quiet evening enjoying the amenities in the home.

Since we are sharing cars, I was pleasantly surprised at how close the beach are to the home. The unique shower heads, whirlpool paths, tempurpedic mattresses and the "Perfect Chair" recliner specifically designed to alleviate back pain have been heavenly for our guests with chronic pain.

The Apple TV and Netflix access with the large swivel arm TV has been extremely useful in entertaining the large family with all my nieces and nephews. It has also provided an easy way for us to all use our iPhones and iPads to share our family photos and movies with each other.

The kitchen is large and is well stocked with any appliances needed to cook for a large family. The kitchen window has a nice ocean view which we enjoyed while cooking & loading the dishwasher.

We slept in the front room and the road noise wasn't disruptive for us. The guests who slept in the back rooms couldn't hear any noise. Those would be the best rooms if anyone has extreme sensitivity to sound.

Since I grew up in the San Diego area and our family currently is scattered across the US, this will now be our location to have reunions.

Lovely, Noisy Architectural Historical Landmark

  • 4 of 5

This home is a mid century wonder which has been lovingly restored and updated. The patios surrounding the home offer privacy and a lovely family experience. That being said, it is located on a very busy street with two lanes of traffic in either direction and no cross walk or traffic signal within a safe walking distance. There is no sidewalk on the house side of the street, so one has to walk in the bike lane. In spite of instructions to cross in the information book provided, there is really no safe way to cross especially if you have children or are older. The traffic is heavy and almost non stop and so it became necessary to drive everywhere. If you are sensitive to traffic noise, this is not the house for you. In addition, we were asked to bring the trash cans outside for collection, something that surprised us as in the many houses we have rented all over the world, we have never been asked to perform this task. A cleaning crew arrived after we left and I do not understand why they could not have done this.

A beautiful blend of historical character and modern convenience

  • 5 of 5

We used the house for a special family reunion, which worked out beautifully. With its five bedrooms, large living room, very functional kitchen and wonderful garden area, the house accommodated 8 adults with ease. We used the patio's large table and grill to host a dinner for 13. Just delightful!!
