Overview

Upper Market Studio Rental Photos and Description

Newly Built Spacious Studio Opening Directly To The Garden.

This peaceful and quiet hidden gem of a studio is perfectly situated in the heart of the city. We're located in the bustling Castro district only a five minute walk to Market and Castro -- a convenient and fast transportation hub with Muni underground, trains and buses. Downtown is only 10-15 minutes away. It's possible to travel directly from SFO by Bart with only one transfer at Civic Center to the Castro Street Muni Station. You won't need a car to get around -- most of our guests enjoy the city without one -- but if you do drive, parking is easy and free on our block.

The Castro is a friendly neighborhood with well cared for classic Victorian and Edwardian buildings, parks, cafes, restaurants, small groceries, shops and the venerable Castro theater. Although it is a flat walk to transportation and Castro street shopping, we have lots of hills nearby with hidden staircases and wonderful views. Start your day with a walk to Tartine Bakery on Valencia for croissants & coffee or up to Twin Peaks for the views. We are perfectly situated next to some of the city's hottest restaurants -- walking distance from the Mission, the Valencia Corridor, Duboce Triangle, Hayes Valley, Lower Haight & Noe Valley

This studio apartment was newly built in 2012 at the garden level of a renovated 1907 Edwardian. Accessed through a side door and corridor to the back, it's great for folks who prefer not to climb a lot of steps. It's a spacious 440 square feet with 9' ceilings, hardwood floors, recess lighting and Anderson sliding doors to a patio and shared garden.

We've set up the apartment for the way we'd like to live if we, family or friends were to stay there for weeks at a time. The sitting area has a comfortable couch and chair, a 32' LCD TV w/cable and DVD, the fabulously comfortable king size bed has lots of great pillows and high thread count cotton sheets. There are bathrobes in the closet and the tiled bathroom is equipped with a hairdryer, bath products and lots of room for your things. Upon request, there is a single mattress for a third person and for our smallest visitors a travel crib or child's cot.

The kitchenette with refrigerator, convection microwave, induction burner, toaster oven, coffee maker, tea kettle, rice cooker and crock-pot, etc. has everything you'll need to eat in when you're not in the mood to take advantage of numerous restaurants nearby. There is a supermarket three blocks away and farmers' markets all over town.

Your hosts, Jan and Wandralee, are happy to direct you to neighborhood cafes & restaurants, interesting places to walk or bike, and all of the wonderful amenities San Francisco has to offer.

We also have an extra bicycle or two that may be available if you inquire before booking.

About Jan Medina

I've lived in San Francisco for more than 40 years and can't imagine ever moving. I still appreciate the parks, museums, cultural activities, great food and being able to walk everywhere. I'm a bicyclist, avid reader, traveler, mother of two grown daughters, grandmother, scuba diver, ceramist, Realtor and work for social change.

My partner and I love spending time with friends, enjoying a walk across town, and hosting travelers from around the world.

Jan Medina purchased this studio in 1992

Why Jan Medina chose Upper Market

I moved from the Mission district to this wonderful 2 unit Edwardian about twenty years ago because it's both quiet and only a few blocks to the center of everything. I love that I can walk to Muni-Metro (which connects to BART) in five minutes and get anywhere easily and quickly -- it's one of the easiest places to catch a bus, train or taxi in SF.

Although street parking is fairly easy, in 2011 we raised our building to put in a three car garage. At that time we built out a new large studio at the garden level.

What makes this studio unique

The Castro is a friendly neighborhood with well cared for classic Victorian and Edwardian buildings, parks, cafes, restaurants, small groceries, shops and the venerable Castro theater. Although it is a flat walk to transportation and Castro street shopping, we have lots of hills nearby with hidden staircases and wonderful views. I often walk to Tartine on Valencia for croissants & coffee or up to Twin Peaks for the views.

Perfectly charming!

  • 5 of 5

This was everything it was presented to be. A perfect location in the heart of the city. Secure, safe, tranquil, beautifully maintained. Quiet, yet close to everything!!!!! And parking not an issue on the street as there were always plenty of spots on Market St. I absolutely loved the peaceful garden in the back, and true to word, the studio filled with sunshine for most of the day....it was so pleasant!! The studio is up to date, modern, well-maintained,and comfortable. I would not hesitate to recommend this place at all. And the owner introduced herself, gave us a little information about herself and offered to help with any needed information!! I had 2 kids with me and it was perfect for us....A kind-size bed and a fold out pad which was very comfortable for my 12 year old daughter. Furthermore, we were immersed in the vibe of the city with Castro Square just 4 blocks down...yet where we were was so tranquil; it was amazing!! And the complimentary wine and nuts...I indulged while enjoying the garden which I also sat in to meditate and to write as it was so inspiring...especially with all the gorgeous lotuses!!!! Thank you!!!!!!

Quiet and Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

The Garden Studio is a wonderful retreat in a charming neighborhood. It is located at the rear of the house, giving guests access to a pretty garden, and insulating it from traffic noise. The apartment is great for sleeping. I use the garden as a writing retreat when I come to San Francisco every January. The Castro location is wonderful, giving guests access to food that is both delicious and affordable. The owners have been very responsive to the few minor problems (internet, etc.) I have had when I have stayed. Great spot!

Everything's new in a Classic San Francisco Edwardian

  • 5 of 5

Great sun-filled apartment that looks into a beautifully landscaped (and cared-for) garden in a classic San Francisco Edwardian that's been renovated and brought up to date in every way. The studio space, with a lot of room for two, is about six blocks uphill from the bustling Castro commercial district and main transportation hub with Muni connections. On-street parking fairly easy to find. Exceptionally comfortable California King bed. Friendly, welcoming owners.

Perfect Honeymoon Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This garden studio is the perfect retreat for anyone wanting a quiet, comfortable, relaxing place to stay while exploring San Francisco! The bed was the most comfortable we have ever slept on! The kitchenette and bathroom were fully stocked. There were so many travel guides, maps, and books available to reference and the wi-fi allowed us to use our device for more specific planning. We lucked out with mostly 80 degree temps while in SF so we could come home at night and relax in the beautiful garden and sleep with the patio door open knowing we were in a safe and secure neighborhood.

The #33 bus goes right by the property and a short walk can get you to the underground or the F Line (both at Market & Castro) to ride historic street cars. There is also plenty of restaurants and markets within a short walk as well. This is a very convenient place to stay! We bought a three day pass that allowed us to take any type of public transit while we were in town. It was only $23 and totally worth it! We did rent a car from Enterprise located on Mission Street for our last full day so we could drive across the Golden Gate to Sausalito and Muir Woods. The service was excellent! Finding parking for a car might prove difficult when staying here, but having one for a day when you get picked up and dropped off again was perfect.

We would definitely stay here again if we ever find ourselves back in San Fran!
