Large, private swimming pool with electric cover. Vacation in a charming, kama`aina style plantation home surrounded by the beauty of nature. Kulike is a unique vacation property in a very tranquil, rural setting. The unique style, and freshness of the home complements the 'off the beaten path' location. It is the perfect location to return to after a day of exploring the island.
Kulike has been used in Pottery Barn photo shoots, and was featured in the February 2012 issue of Coastal Living Magazine. Coastal Living is quoted as saying 'Coming here is about being outside, enjoying the views and spending time with each other'.
Kulike is a classic Hawaiian design with modern amenities. It offers a very quiet country setting, with several acres of property, lovely ocean views, hundreds of tropical plants and trees, AND a 40ft swimming pool (with electric cover). Enjoy our little nature walk showcasing rare palms and plants. Many are labeled for your reference.
Our home was completed in 2005 and building materials were chosen to blend with the coastal elements - Douglas fir walls, hickory pecan floors, and mahogany window frames. We also wanted to be sustainable, and have catchment water, solar hot water, photovoltaic system for the pool pump, and of course our fresh air 'solar' clothes line (of course we also have a clothes dryer in the house).
The interior was designed in the style of a Kama`aina plantation house for a casual easy-going lifestyle. It has wide covered decks, full kitchen (including a commercial style range), two bedrooms with queen beds, one children's room with 2 single beds, laundry, TV/DVD, high speed wireless internet access. Many of the furnishings are antiques.
This is a very special environment for the guest that truly wants to feel as though they have escaped!
We visited Maui for years before deciding that we wanted to have our own property. We wanted it to be lush and tranquil. This location was perfect. We secured the land, and then started to design the house. We wanted something very different from our mainland home so that we'd come to Hawaii and feel that we'd escaped the hustle/bustle. The style resembles on old plantation home, but has top quality finish features.
We love our home, and hope that you will too.
The Kulike house and grounds are a beautiful and peaceful place for a vacation to Hawaii. Haiku is a bit out of the way of the more touristy spots, so if that is what you are looking for, this is a great one. The home was very comfortable, well stocked, and clean. Lovely back porch with view of the pool and ocean in the distance. The pool has a cover which keeps it warmer than without, but in the winter, still a little cool but my kids swam in it no problem.
My family and I loved the house. This was our sixth trip to Maui and it was very nice to be able to relax in "real Hawaii". Of course we would still have to make a living and actually leave the property every day.
Pro Kulike Points:
Salt water pool was awesome! My two kids (11 & 9) would do a morning swim, take a break. Afternoon swim, take a break and evening swim. My daughter has very sensitive eyes, pools always get to her because of all the chemicals. No issues here. It is actually a large pool, it looks big on the website and is big in person.
Can hike down to the end of the road. Took the path and you end up going down the hill to a very rocky and secluded beach. My family and I did it in flip flops. Recommend shoes, and water shoes if you want to dip your toes (all rocks). If you look to your left there is a small outcrop of rocks that absorb some of the waves. Can dip your toes there, otherwise it looks like the waves would take you out into the open ocean quickly. Very beautiful and I think I might try some fishing here next time. Also do not forget bug spray!
Very close to Twin Falls, go after 3:30 and many of the tourists are gone. Awesome little place to get drinks and snacks at the entrance.
Quick little drive to Haiku. If you feel lost just enjoy the drive and you will not be disappointed. Little local market next to the post office, has some organic items, all your basic necessities and great poki.
Drove to the "main" part of Haiku. Has a large general store, not great for produce. But good bug spray, kitchen essentials, sunscreen, soda, h20. Also a little "Thai Food Bus" in parking lot. Really good fresh Thai food, run by a family. Very friendly and reasonably priced. Taco shop right next door, very good as well.
There is also a breakfast place in this center that my family enjoyed. Can not remember the name of anything, but please remember everything slows down here. If your in a "rush" to be served cook at home.
Kulike house will allow you to take a full breath every morning and completely exhale at night. Every sense will be awakened. It will remind you that life is about family and feeling free. Kulike allowed us to remember it is all about family and feeling free. I take a full breath every morning and exhale every night.
There are no cons to this house! We had a great time. My family and I loved this house and will be staying there again.
We had a great visit and I am happy to report that Kulike was just what we had hoped it would be - and more! We all agreed that the house was very comfortable and well appointed. The grounds were just beautiful and it was nice to be off the beaten path at the end of the day. I have vacationed on Maui twice before - in a condo at Ho'olei in Wailea and last year at the Ritz in Kapalua so this was my first time staying "up country" and I really enjoyed it. I must admit I had some concerns about it being too remote but as I mentioned it was nice to be away from it all at the end of the day and enjoy the peace and quiet that Kulike offers. We also found Baldwin beach to be as nice, if not nicer than many of the other beaches that we visited on the island and that quickly became our "go to" beach.
As far as restaurants, I am a huge fan of Mama's Fish House (had lunch there on Day 1 and dinner on our last night). I really do think it is worth the $$$$. We also dined at Charley's (excellent ceviche), Rock and Brew (ahi sandwich was delicious) and were also very impressed with the Paia fish market, which we visited a few times.
We didn't really do much in the way of "touristy" activities except go to Hana (I had not been and I think it is something you should do, if only once) and we also went to Lahaina one afternoon and had appetizers and drinks at Kimo's, which is a sister restaurant of one of our favorites (Jake's on the Lake) in South Lake Tahoe. That is a nice spot to enjoy the sunset and some music.
The other couple that we were vacationing with rented a Harley one day and drove it up to Haleakala (I had done the sunrise visit on my last trip to Maui) and they really enjoyed that experience, as well as touring the rest of the island via motorcycle. They said that the rental process was quite easy and more affordable that you might think.
I would definitely stay at Kulike again. I try to visit Hawaii once a year so I will definitely keep you in mind when we are ready to start planning next year's trip. It was a pleasure to work with you and you made the whole rental experience a pleasant one which is not always the case, I have found.
Thank you again for helping us find the perfect house for our stay on Maui!
Our stay was beyond amazing! The house was beautiful and relaxing and quiet :). It was everything we could have hoped for on our vacation. We made good use of the kitchen every day and the porch was a favorite as well!
I have no recommendations to change anything, because it’s perfect as it is! I don’t know that we had a favorite thing that we did during our stay. We were lucky enough to see the whole island while we were there, and everything was fantastic! If anything, it would have been good to know which golf courses are recommended for the area. We went to the Dunes at Maui Lani, which was good, but wasn’t sure if there were better places to go.
Thanks again. Will definitely keep in touch and let you know about a future visit!
Kulike is the best house I've ever rented, and I've rented beautiful houses all over the world. It's perfectly located, perfectly sited, super clean and comfortable, and the most livable house I've ever stayed in. In fact, now I want to build the same house. It's ideal - great layout, comfortable furniture, no tchotchkes, stunning landscaping and pacific views, spotless pool, super comfortable beds and baths - I would not change ONE thing. The kitchen is so chic and easy to use with everything anyone would want. I would not consider any other house on this island. This is it. You found the best one. Enjoy.
We had an absolutely wonderful, restful, playful time on Maui. Kulike was even more perfect than we'd expected and it provided a relaxing home-base for our adventures all over the island. We appreciated the laid back luxury appointments - comfy beds and soft linens, lots of towels (bath and beach), feather/down sofas, cozy throws, a completely outfitted kitchen (even my chef-husband approved), excellent appliances - and the thoughtful touches. We didn't get to use the pool as much as we had hoped to, as the water was very chilly throughout our stay. We did enjoy the lanai and the spectacular grounds, as well as the beautiful views.
A vacation in Haiku Maui is an opportunity to escape from the hustle and bustle, and experience a different side of Maui. Set just a few hundred feet above sea level, Kulike is surrounded by tropical vegetation, with a view down to the ocean. Just a few miles down the road is a town center, with a variety of amenities, restaurants and services. Most properties in this area are rural in style, with two acres or more. Tropical vegetation provides a lush, green backdrop to the ocean views.
