BEAUTIFUL OLD FARMHOUSE WITH PRIVATE SWIMMING POOL IN 15 ACRES OF OLIVE GROVES

Montefino Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

Excellent & spacious holiday home with fantastic outside seating areas, sleeps 6

A traditional farmhouse built over an ancient spring nestled on a south facing hillside. This beautifully extended & restored house is a perfect holiday home for people who value their privacy but want easy access to shops & restaurants. It has its own private pool and attractive gardens & comfortably sleeps 6 people. Lovingly restored and furnished to a high standard to create a peaceful hideaway in the Abruzzo hills. 2 large bedrooms with king sized beds and a bathroom upstairs. Cot and playpen available. Fully equipped kitchen with wood burning stove, sitting room, & a lounge/dining room with a double sofa bed, log burning stove, TV and DVD player and a good selection of books and DVDs. The lounge has its own bathroom. A shaded outside lounge overlooks the pool and there is a covered outside dining area for all weather outside dining. Surrounded by the owner's olive farm with farmland stretching in all directions. Lovely views of two mountain ranges and a medieval village.

Large Groups: If you are a large group or are looking for two properties close together Fonte Monache is on the same farm as a second beautifully restored old farm house. This house called is Casa Cichella, and is also advertised with Home and Away as property 74858.

The two houses share the same 15 acre farm but are approximately 300 metres apart at either end of the main olive groves so you will be near enough to join up as a large group but not near enough to mean that you sacrifice any of your privacy.

Casa Cichella also has its own swimming pool, private garden and great views and sleeps up to 8 people in comfort.

Stunning house, beautiful location

  • 5 of 5
On arrival at the house we were blown away by the stunning views. The peace and tranquility were exactly what we were looking for. The house itself was beautiful inside and out, clean, tidy, and almost felt like home straight away. My daughter loved having our own pool too! The guide book of the local area provided by Steve was better than most shop bought books, (he clearly knows the area well), and helped us greatly. I would definitely recommend Fonte Monache to other friends and family for a holiday that rediscovers the real rural Italy.

Another wonderful time in Abruzzo.

  • 5 of 5
Another visit to the Fonte Monache house, this is the 3rd time have rented this house with my family and the 3rd year in a row. The house is beautiful home away from home lovely pool and gardens to sit and relax and hear the wildlife chirping away. The local village is a delight and to visit the local bar and say hello again and be remembered just shows the local feel of a lovely place.
The owners were brilliant before hand preparing us for our visit and any issues we knew we could rely on the contact to help The guide book was again extremely useful in choosing our restaurants and places to visit. We hope to visit again in the next few years, as it really is a joy to visit such a wonderful and relaxing place. My daughter loved the swimming pool and was in and out all the time. Thank you again for such a wonderful stay.

DISAPPOINTED.!

  • 2 of 5
Having rented houses in Europe for over 20 yrs we have never posted a negative review. Apart from one previous experience they have always been very enjoyable and reflected what we had been led to expect. Whilst we viewed Fonte Monache for what it is (a remote refurbished farmhouse) we both felt it was a bit 'frayed at the edges' and not actually true to the description on the web nor did the pictures reflect the true state of the house as it is today and were clearly taken a while ago. The inside of the house was pleasant enough, however the 'Sky/Satellite TV' consisted of Al-Jazeera and nothing else. Thankfully the TV does not figure in our holiday experience! The promised 'home grown olive oil' was not included in the welcome pack.
Given that we both like to start the day with a swim, the 'swimming pool' was a disaster. A more honest description might have been a splash pool. A standard swimming pool on a villa rental is usually 8x4 mtrs and often bigger. We were aware that the pool was not very deep but it was circular and three strokes got my husband across it, great for children, but it most certainly was not a swimming pool. The area around the pool was edged with strips of decking which were broken/loose in places, there were two sun beds for a house that sleeps six and the patio rattan furniture had seen much better days. The garden area was nicely planted but very overgrown and the stagnant water feature next to the sitting area did nothing to alleviate the terrible problem of biting insects. The olive groves (which we were invited to wander) were in desperate need of attention and walking the land close to the house was impossible. The fridge freezer (which is in the outdoor kitchen) worked but the ice making facility did not and a warning light that the 'filters' needed replacing indicated that all was not well. We pointed this out to the couple who looked after the house (delightful they were too!) but were told that they had contacted the owner but nothing could be done as the fridge was "bought in the UK"!?...
Despite some rave reviews from previous visitors it would appear that they are quite old and maybe do not reflect more recent experiences. Sadly the house is in desperate need of some urgent attention and comparing recent photos to the ones on the web site would confirm this. If you like rustic and serious wildlife (which you are warned about in the 'blue book' in the house) then you might enjoy Fonte Monache....

Owner's Response: We are obviously very disappointed and surprised by this review. Our guest book this season is full of positive comments so it is a shame that this family felt let down.
The photographs of the house were all taken this year or the year before but Southern Italy is a harsh climate with cold winters and very hot summers and the house always looks very different by early September than in the spring.
It is inaccurate so say that the only television is Al-Jazeera - the normal free channels are on the satellite system including BBC news, plus free view German and Italian Channels. Our caretakers would have happily shown the guests how to get more channels if they had been asked. British Sky is not licensed to transmit to Italy and there is no way I know of to get UK terrestrial channels this far south so it is best not to expect East Enders.
We are sorry that there was no olive oil, there was a poor harvest last year and our stocks had run out by September. We will remove this from the advert in case it happens again.
I feel the comments regarding the swimming pool are very unfair, the photographs very clearly show that it is s small round pool (7 metres across) and we have never suggested otherwise. Many rental properties in Abruzzo have pools of this type as it is very difficult to get planning permission for in-ground pools on farm land.
Italian farmers cut the grass under the olive tress twice a year, at the end of spring and just before the harvest in October. In such a climate everything grows with great vigour so by September the grass and everything else is long. It is advertised as an olive farm and this is what an olive farm looks like by the end of the summer. Rural southern italy has plenty of insects so where ever you go you will meet the wildlife.
We are sorry that the outdoor furniture has taken such a beating this season and we will replace it next spring. The. so called, water feature is actually a spring and was obviously running dry by the end of the summer. There are so many places to sit that it does not effect most of the property.
Fonte Monache is a beautiful and comfortable rural farm house set in a stunning landscape ten minutes from one of best preserved and most attractive old villages in Abruzzo. Guests who want peace and quiet, total relaxation, great views and a house designed for hot summer living love it and come back year after year but expect to experience real rural Italy.

Haven In Abruzzo

  • 5 of 5
After a challenging journey to Italy and the hustle and bustle of Rome, we were delighted with the charm and serenity of Fonte Monache. We loved the house...it was so well equipped, comfortable and so nicely decorated . Being from New England in the US, we were so enamored with the olive groves and myriad fruit and nut trees. The only drawback for us was the driveway, it was somewhat difficult to maneuver. The guide book written by the owners was absolutely invaluable..what a resource ! We truly enjoyed this area , people, food & wine ..authentic.
This is defintely a house I would consider renting again.

Peaceful Bliss

  • 5 of 5
The title of my review says everything you need to know about Fonte Monache. Set in beautiful surroundings it is everything you see as advertised. The house is a wonderful insight into rural Italy with its originality, but also has the required modern element in the shape of the pool to keep my 11 year old daughter amused, although the adults among our group found entertainment in there too! The views are simply stunning and even though this was my 2nd stay at Fonte Monache i never cease to be in awe at the scenery. The house was clean, bright and fresh and it felt like being in your own home rather than a holiday rental property. Even though we knew there was a 2nd property just along the hill, we heard no noise than the laughter of our group and the crickets in the evening. Steve & Sharon's guide book to the local and surrounding area was superbly put together and you will struggle to find better in a bookshop, and their general attitude and helpfulness towards our party was key in securing our booking. I would definitely recommend Fonte Monache to other people and have in fact recommended it to several of my clients back in the UK who share my love of Italy. I will definitely be coming back again.

A week in Italian Paradise.

  • 5 of 5
This is my 6th or 7th year visiting Abruzzo, and was again not let down by the wonderful house we stayed in. Fonte Monache is a beautiful home from home, it is homely with lovely decoration and beautiful surroundings. The pool gave us hours of fun and relaxation and sitting listening to the wildlife and watching the stars at night was so relaxing and peaceful. 6 of us were staying at the house, one being an 11 year old, and she absolutely loved her time there, she was constantly looking for interesting bugs and wildlife, and in and out of the pool. The guidebook that has been provided by the owners, is an incredible insight to the region and i'm sure you couldn't find a better one in the shops. 4 teachers were part of this group, and after a hard year we could not have asked for a better place to stay.
thanks for the wonderful house and wonderful time spent in Monte Fino - the village locals and the bar are also wonderful, not to mention some of the restaurants in the area.

thank you and we look forward to staying at Fonte Monache again in the future. We will definitely be back :)

Abruzzo is the least populated region of Italy offering 129 km of beaches, wonderful mountains, including the highest peaks in Italy outside of the Alps, and rolling hills between the coast and the uplands. 30% of the region is national park and offers some of the most remote & beautiful scenery in southern Europe. The house is about half way between the sandy beaches, bars & restaurants of Pineto & Pescara and the Gran Sasso mountains and national park which offer skiing, walking, climbing, horse or bike riding or just a great place to picnic. In spring the high plateaus are famous for acres of wild flowers and in autumn the huge beech forests are a profusion of colour. History buffs will find 80 castles, beautiful medieval villages & towns as well as Roman & pre-Roman remains. Fresh pasta & bread are made daily in the village and local farms offer cheese, olive oil, & meats. Our local winery is becoming internationally recognised yet still offers robust reds for about €1 a litre.
