Bolinas House Rental Photos and Description

2 BR + 2 BA On 10 acres, Sleeps 4-6

This unique home, built in 1976 of redwood salvaged from pier 41 in San Francisco, has 6 floors with superb views in all directions. The home is constructed with 40’ tall poles connected by beams to form a unique, multi-level living space with large full-wall windows in every room. The home sits on 10 secluded acres, one-half mile from and 200’ above State Route 1 in Dogtown, on the northern edge of Bolinas. Outside the living room is a three-tiered 1600 sq. foot deck shaded by centuries-old oak trees with spectacular views of Bolinas ridge and the old Vierra Ranch.

The property is a nature lover’s paradise. Sitting on the deck with a cup of coffee in the early morning light you will observe hundreds of birds and other wildlife. Turkeys, quail, woodpeckers, deer, raccoons, bobcats, bluebirds, and hawks inhabit the woods and pastures surrounding the house; while ducks, mergansers, egrets, herons, ospreys, and turtles use the large pond at the bottom of the property. There are hundreds of daffodils and crocuses blooming in the lawn in the spring; honeysuckle, jasmine and roses fill the air with perfume in summer and the apples, pears, plums, lemons and wild blackberries that ripen on the property in fall make for great pies and jams; you are encouraged to pick and bake treats during your stay.

The house comfortably sleeps 4-6 people in beds. There are two bedrooms; a master suite with a pillow-top queen-sized bed on the top level and a second bedroom with two twin beds on the third level. Both bedrooms have full baths. Each has a private deck/balcony. There is ample room for 2 more family members on the fourth level, which is an office suite with a full-sized futon couch, although this level is open to the living room 20’ below and is not private. In addition, two folding foam-core single mattresses are available for extra guests. The office level also has built-in desks and file cabinets that is ideal for the writer or artist to set up as a work area, with large windows and gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape.

The Living room is wall-to-wall windows with bookcases and a wood burning stove. Firewood, including kindling, is provided for use during your stay. The kitchen is very well stocked with most modern conveniences (4 burner glass-top electric stove, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher) and has many extras (e.g., blender, crock pot, Rommertopf clay cooker, and assorted baking dishes) plus service for 12. We provide coffee, a selection of teas, spices, and varied condiments for your convenience and use during your visit.

The house is very kid friendly and, with 10 acres of woods and pastures, there is ample room to explore right on the grounds. The property would be ideal for small family gatherings, special occasions and events, or simply a romantic getaway. There is a picnic table and a large 4-burner BBQ grill on the deck with propane provided for grilling. Although the house can only accommodate a maximum of 8 overnight guests, special arrangements can be made for larger dinner gatherings on the huge deck. Here, we can provide long tables set under the arching limbs of centuries old oaks for a spectacular dining experience or for other special events. You have the option of cooking your own wonderful meals or enjoy having them catered for you by our “caretaker” who has her own well-known catering business. A new Hot Springs, 6-person spa has been set up on the upper tier of the deck and is available 24/7 for your pleasure.

Life at the Birdhouse was chronicled by Doris Ober who resided at the home for over 25 years with her husband and builder/designer Richard Kirschman. She once described the house as being “out of a fairy tale….resembling an unfolded wooden Chinese puzzle, all unexpected angles and slanted roofs”. Her wonderful book 'The Dogtown Chronicles' (a copy of which is available to read at the house and for sale at local bookstores) recalls the many years of living here with a menagerie of animals, both wild and domestic.

The property is just one mile from the Audubon Canyon Ranch where you can visit a heronry, watch seals and view all kinds of bird life on Bolinas Lagoon; and 10 miles from the Point Reyes National Seashore HQ. Close by are some incredible hikes along the coast, including several trails into the southern end of Point Reyes National Seashore. The property borders the PRNS with one trail starting only 100 yards north of the driveway to the house.

The town of Bolinas is 3 miles south of the property. Bolinas is a beautiful, small coastal village teeming with artists and has a vibrant local music scene. Bolinas has its own museum, art gallery, library, general store, natural food store, and restaurant, as well as a surf shop, bike rental shop, and video rental store. It is also home to the oldest continually operating bar in California, Smiley's Saloon. Founded in the 1850's, Bolinas has long served as a weekend getaway for San Franciscans. It remains a great retreat where you can enjoy barbecued oysters and delicious local fare at the Coast Café, or shop for locally caught fish, abundant organic produce, and Niman meats in the town markets. Bolinas is a dog friendly town and so is our home so bring your pooch and enjoy your stay!

If you appreciate unique places and embrace the out-of-the-ordinary, come visit the Birdhouse and stay awhile; we're sure you'll see why we think it is a one-of-a-kind retreat in one of the last best places in CA!

Our love of Bolinas began in 1981 when we moved from New England to California to join the Point Reyes Bird Observatory, then headquartered on Bolinas Lagoon. Since those days we have continually worked in Antarctica, studying penguins as monitors of changes to the Southern Ocean ecosystem. After more than 3 decades of research, we will soon be retiring and returning to our roots and the place we love most of all, Bolinas, CA.

Wayne & Sue Trivelpiece purchased this house in 2012

We had known for several years that when the time came to retire we wanted to move back to Bolinas, where we had lived for 13 years & now have family. We saw this property in November 2011 while visiting family over Thanksgiving, and absolutely loved the unique house & unspoiled surroundings.

The property is such a special place, from the fairy tale house to the private setting, it gives off such positive energy. You are only an hour from San Francisco, but it is so peaceful and relaxing you will feel light-years removed from the busy city. West Marin is a sanctuary of nature reserves, artist studios, small artisan food providers, and peaceful enclaves; here you will feel like you have traveled to a foreign land. This property is well situated to explore the region, or you might find it the perfect place to just hang out on the deck, in the spa or by the fire and enjoy the peace and quiet.

The house was just what we needed for a wedding weekend! The office futon was comfortable, the view from the top floor bathroom was incredible, and the various floors allowed for privacy - though do note that noise travels well! We had 3 couples, one baby, and one single. The hot tub was a highlight, as we're the expansive decks. A few things to note: we did see/hear a scurrying mouse in the kitchen at night, the kitchen was well equipped for cooking as was the outdoor grill, a few areas of the deck seemed a bit fragile, and the house is 'rustic' so expect to find some bugs or webs in corners. We had a great time and would certainly make a special trip just to stay here! The owners were wonderfully flexible with our arrival time, and the house was equipped with everything we needed! Extra points for having a speaker system with an iPhone dock!

Owner's Response: So glad you all enjoyed your stay! Thanks for the nice review. Yes, the house is "rustic" and in the country, with trees all around, so there are bound to be a few cobwebs in corners and critters getting in occasionally. We'll definitely let the caretakers know about the little uninvited guest in the kitchen - thanks for the heads-up! And since the house is unique & built with a very open floor plan, sound does tend to travel up from below. In fact, the only rooms with doors are the bathrooms & the lower bedroom, but all the rooms are on different levels, giving them adequate privacy.

Three nights in the birdhouse recharged my batteries in the best possible way. We were a group of 7 friends celebrating a birthday and this was the perfect place for it. House is very comfortable and well equipped (especially the kitchen! we love to cook and usually bring our own pans and knives but didn't really need to have done that for this house - thank you, Wayne & Sue!). No problem sleeping 7, though don't expect privacy for everyone - pull out couch is open to the main room. Sleeps 4 in complete privacy. The surroundings are stunning - wonderful sunrises, fog lifting through the trees, a pair of hawks flying by several times a day. The dog loved it - sniffed everything, ran around like crazy and then snoozed with us by the wood stove. We went for walks on the beach (both Bolinas and Stinson), hikes on the Bolinas Ridge trail (accessed by the mccurdy trail - the trail head is walking distance from the house), and walks around the property to enjoy the flowers and statuary that is everywhere. Lunch on the patio with crisp white wine, followed by a relaxing soak in the hot tub. Can't be beat!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a glowing review, Julia! We have put much thought & effort into stocking & decorating The Birdhouse, reflecting what we, personally, like to find in a rental. Also, since we stay at The Birdhouse several times a year and are avid cooks, we like to have a well-outfitted kitchen so we don't have to bring much with us.
For parties of more than 4, it's true that the additional sleeping areas are not very private, but we make this clear in our description of the house, if one reads through it completely. If you don't mind sharing beds/rooms/bathrooms, it's a great place for a group get-together!

Perfect retreat for friends old & new.

An old friend chose to convene some old and new friends at the Birdhouse and it was the perfect choice. Open home with spectacular views, nestled on the side of a hill right in the thick of woods and pasture. Not far from Bolinas and a short distance from Route One. Spectacular morning light, excellent whirlpool. Beautiful stars seen from the deck. And attentive, generous hosts (I left something at the home and they ensured I got it back safe and sound). Highly recommended.

This is a BEAUTIFUL home set on the hillside, sweeping decks, comfortable spaces for hanging out. We were here with 8 people total, and it felt easy and homey. It was well maintained and all communication with the owners was effective and easy. Highly recommended!

The house is cute and the grounds outside are nice. However, there were three major issues with the house that really tarnished our visit:

1) The house was NOT clean when we arrived. The kitchen table, literally the first thing you see when you come in the door, still had sticky residue and crumbs on it. Virtually none of the dishes were clean, so we had to clean dishes every time we wanted to eat. There was still old coffee grounds still stuck in the coffee filter. And, there was hair all over the bathrooms. It seems unfair to charge a cleaning fee when the place isn't even close to clean when we arrived.

2) BUGS! We woke up to find ants all over our toothbrush and toothpaste. The top floor bedroom was literally INFESTED with lady bugs -- they were crawling all over the windows, in the beams above our heads, and some even on the bed. It was very disconcerting trying to sleep when an insect could fall on you at any time.

3) The driveway is extremely, long, windy, steep and somewhat treacherous. We were a bit nervous every time we drove up it. Furthermore, the house is very far from town and is right on Route 1, so you really can't walk anywhere and have to keep driving up and down the difficult driveway.

Owner's Response: We apologize for this less than satisfactory stay. The house is advertised as rustic and 3 miles from town. We have never had any complaints about its remoteness, in fact most guests have been thrilled to be "away from it all". As for the ladybugs, they are a seasonal thing that we cannot control except with poisons, which we want to avoid. We usually warn guests of the possibility of ladybugs this time of year.

The house is usually very well cleaned after each rental, but there were complications that occurred just prior to this guest's arrival. There was a break in the main water pipe in the basement, which took several hours to repair and clean-up. The group that had checked out that morning had 8 people, so the caretakers had only a few hours to clean the house WITHOUT WATER, and had to take all the laundry to town. We know they tried their best to get the house ready.

Knowing about the problem with the broken water pipe, and the short turnaround time the caretakers had to deal with it and clean the place, we called The Birdhouse at 6pm the night this guest checked in, to make sure that everything was in order. We explained about the water break and how that affected the set up for the visit and asked if there were any problems. We were assured that all was fine, except for needing to locate some items. We reiterated the contact information for the caretakers, who were only minutes away and willing to assist in any way.

Prior to the guest's arrival, in response to requests from them, we arranged for Christmas packages to be shipped to the house & purchased a hair dryer for the house. In addition, the caretaker was called during their stay for help in operating the dishwasher, and he came immediately. No mention of any other problems was made at that time. To remain silent about other concerns, and then write such an unflattering review seems unfair; we would have bent over backwards to set things right. However, these guests chose not to call for assistance upon finding what they now describe as a dirty house; if guests won’t speak up, we cannot fix what we don’t know about. However, as requested, we refunded their cleaning fee.
