The property is perched on a promontory giving beautiful ocean views of Paia Bay and its tranquil 1/2 mile long white beach. The house sits above a sea wall and has just ten steps down to the white sand. The property is gated and just a short 150 yard walk to the center of the delightful and colorful village of Paia. Location great, Accommodations not so great

  • 1 of 5
My family and I were quite disappointed by the condition of the home, wherein it clearly was not cleaned prior to our arrival, floors were in need of being mopped and the overall appearance indicated it needed a good thorough cleaning as it was grimy. Deck furniture was covered in bird poo. We also unfortunately discovered cockroaches, sugar ants and other bugs that wanted to share the kitchen and bathrooms with us. ICK! No soap, shampoo in the bathrooms, as well as limited supply of TP, garbage bags, paper towels – so we ended up having to buy extra TP and paper towels, shampoo and soap. Also fire alarms were missing in most of the bedrooms, the casings were there but the units itself was missing. The outside could also use a lot of repainting and maintenance work as well. To be fair, the manager and owner tried to be responsive, but it still was an unpleasant experience. The location is great, close to the beach and shops, but the steep narrow steps to the beach prevented my elderly mom from going to the beach.

I’ve stayed at other homes through this site, but was quite shocked and unhappy with this stay. I felt I paid premium "Ritz Carlton" prices for "Motel 6" quality. I would not recommend this place to my friends or family.

Owner's Response: We are very surprised with this as we addressed all your issues and you thanked us. Your party arrived on 11/21 at 11:30 pm, we had given you the instruction on how to enter the unit. Due to your late arrival our manager was not able to be there to check you in. Usually at check in we do a walk through along with the guest to see that everything is satisfactory. You contacted us the next morning and complained about dead bugs and the unit is not clean. We immediately contacted our cleaner and she contacted you and offered to come immediately to address all issues. You refused our offer instead you immediately requested a 50% discount on your stay. We asked for pictures of the alleged issues, you only furnished us some pictures two bird droppings on an outdoor recliner. We then called you again the same day and offered you to have our on island manager to go to the unit and review the issues and take care of them, you again refused our offer. Finally on Sunday 11/22 you agree to meet him that afternoon. When he arrived you were not in the unit. He inspected the unit to see if there is any sign of bugs or any sign that the unit has not been cleaned, he reported that all appeared to be in excellent condition and he could not find any evidence of your alleged claims. He took numerous pictures to show that the house was clean, tidy and bug free. On Monday we offered you a non invasive eco friendly bug treatment although we have a regular bi-monthly pest control treatment. You then said ok and thanked us for it. You also mentioned in your review that there was no soaps, shampoos and limited supplies of toilet paper, garbage bags and paper towels. You only mentioned the shampoos and soap shortage when you contacted us and we brought them to you immediately the following day. As for the toilet paper, garbage bags and paper towels,we would have directed you to the utility closet where we store them.
The beach access is down seven stone step and if you had told us you had a an elderly relative at the time of booking, we would have advised you accordingly. Our rate is $815 per night for 5bed 4bath, with 3 kitchens and two structures, right on the beach, Ritz Carlton would currently be $2500+ for this and not direct beachfront. We think your review is unjust. The only reason is that you are in the same industry and know how to work the system to obtain a reduced rate. You alluded to this when you first contacted us that very first morning.

NICE, BUT

  • 3 of 5
Half our 10-night stay on Maui was spent at this Paia house. We are a three-generation family of 9, making for an interesting range of plans, wishes and expectations.
The best feature of this house is its site at the edge of the bay. From the porch, learn to spot the large turtles feeding among the close-in rocks. Climb very carefully down the rock stairs to sea level and walk 80 feet to a nice beach where you can swim or snorkel. Farther away to the west but in easy walking distance is an even better place for water activities.
The house is very near downtown Lower Paia, a small but important village on Highway 36. It is an active and unpretentious junction of roads leading east to Hana, south to Haleakala, and west to the airport.
We booked this house in May 2013 for a July 2014 stay, and so were unaware of the early 2014 reviews. Those reviews list numerous faults found by others. We found many of those faults ourselves. It is clear that the owners were not interested in having anything fixed or improved. Too bad. Our other 5-night rental, at a Kihei beach, was modern, well furnished and maintained, and only very slightly more costly.
I cannot rate this place higher than 3.

Experience Island Living

  • 5 of 5
We couldn't have picked a better rental for our February trip. The location was fantastic and the view was spectacular. We were entertained by surfers, sea turtles and sunsets daily and much to our surprise we could view whales on the horizon. It was great to be able to walk to town for coffee, shopping and dining and step out of the yard to the beach. The house was comfortable and had everything we needed and more room than we could even use. The owner and manger were a pleasure to work with, thanks so much!

Nice house, needs some little fixes to make it great

  • 4 of 5
Our family of 5 adults stayed here for a week in January. The beds are comfy, although one of the king-sized beds that is made of two twin beds needs to have a pad to cover up the valley in the middle. Plenty of hangers in all bedrooms, but no dressers (just night stands). The wood floors are very creaky. We noticed that a lot of light bulbs were burnt out, especially in the front kitchen and back porch (at the main entrance to the house). The front kitchen doesn’t have a stove, so we had to use the gas stove in the rear kitchen, which emitted a funny smell (some thought it smelled like gas, some thought like burnt baked-on food). The microwave in the front kitchen didn’t work, and the dishwasher (which we were happy to have) was not screwed to the cabinet, and the bottom rack would fall off the track when pulled out. Renters should be told about the ants in the kitchen (which are common in Hawaii) and told to keep food in the fridge instead of on the counter or ziplock bags provided.
We’ve rented a lot of places through VRBO, and compared to those, this house was lacking in paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, and tissues) to last a full week. The TV in the living room in the rear unit wasn’t plugged in because the router and modem were using the outlet, so a power strip should be provided so that TV and cable box can be used. The wireless was easy to access and fast, though. No coasters. No tools for the grill, which was hard to light (starter doesn’t always work). There were only 3 beach towels, and not enough bath towels or wash cloths. The door in the bathroom in the rear unit was hard to open (either the wood was swollen from the humidity or the handle mechanism wouldn’t retract all the way; if a kid was in there alone, he or she probably wouldn’t be able to open the door alone). The front screen door didn’t close all the way and the screen was ripped.
These are things that can be fixed. The house itself was in a great location, with easy access to Baldwin beach (by climbing over the back fence and walk along the edge to the stone stairs). People from the other coastal houses also use this route to get to the beach. We watched a lot of surfers in the morning right from our living room and kitchen windows. It was nice to be able to just go out the gate (key access pad hard to find in the bushes though) and into Paia town for shopping and meals. We would recommend this house to others, if the management fixes everything mentioned.

Great place!would definitely go back.

4couples stayed for four days. House was clean. Location was awesome, as well as the view. Manager very accommodating and easy to deal with. Only thing that was would have improved the stay was having AC throughout unit rather than just two bedrooms. But we loved our stay there, wished we could have stayed even longer.
