The Townhouse is to be found in a quiet cobbled street, nestled within the quaint and unspoiled ‘Old Town’ of Altea. Our first impression was the vibrant blaze of colours from Bouganvilleas and Pelargoniums contrasting with the whitewashed houses and their blue-painted doors.
The outside photo of the house does not do it justice and the interior of the house was superb. All the spacious rooms delightfully combine the original Spanish vernacular with a most tasteful contemporary flavour. The double-height Kitchen/Breakfast Room with its clearstorey windows is not only a splendid space but is fully equipped with every modern appliance and accessory. It almost goes without saying that throughout, this house is extremely well appointed and spotlessly clean.
The exterior is equally charming. The tranquil terracotta paved terraces, surrounded with pots of colourful flowers and shrubs are provided with tables, chairs and loungers for both outdoor dining and relaxing. We spent many a happy cocktail-hour here!
We had hired a car with the express purpose of visiting Valencia. It was the Easter Holidays and we had been told that the Fiesta there was not to be missed. We were overwhelmed by this spectacle, known locally as Las Fallas, and I would commend this unique festival to everyone. We had no need for our car in Altea as the beach, supermarkets, shops, restaurants and bars are all within walking distance. However, there was a parking space only a few metres from the house, which was most convenient when it came to moving our suitcases. ( It never ceases to amaze me how much luggage a wife and two teenage daughters require for a two-week holiday!).
We travelled with British Airways at the time of their strike action and consequently we were not sure if we would have to cancel our holiday. We spoke with Jean, the owner of the house, and explained our dilemma. She was really most kind, telling us “Not to worry at all”, and assuring us that our booked dates could be tailored to suit. As it turned out, we did not have too many problems. But it was so comforting to know we had no worries about our accommodation. Jean also ‘phoned us, upon our arrival, to ensure we had arrived safely….a very thoughtful touch, in our opinion.
What more to add? All in all, a most memorable holiday in a charming house, enjoyed by all the family (all the girls insist we return next year…..I think we shall).
