About russedwards1@aol.com

This has been Russ & Shirley's home since 1969. We raised our four children here. It began as a summer cottage and has long since become our year round home. We are both now retired and spend our summers in the Willard Beach area in South Portland where we take care of our granddaughter, Aminah. We had previously considered selling our property but due to our great success with VRBO we have taken it off the market.

russedwards1@aol.com purchased this cottage in 1966

Why russedwards1@aol.com chose Peaks Island

Location, Location, Location, Only a 15 minute Ferry ride from Portland, Peaks Island is frequently refered to as the 'Martha's Vinyard' of Casco Bay only friendlier. We believe we live on the best part of the Island. We are away from the hustle and bustle of down front and from the traffic on the back shore and we are only steps from the beach.

What makes this cottage unique

If you are fortunate enough to spend a night on an island, then you are fortunate enough.

Relaxing and Great Sunsets!

  • 4 of 5
Thanks, Russ, for a very relaxing week. The sunsets from your porch are amazing. This is probably my fifth stay on the island, and this was the nicest place I've stayed. My daughter especially loved our treasure hunt for all the wood animal statues.

One of the best houses

  • 5 of 5
Despite what one reviewer, below, wrote, the house is modern, safe and clean. We've stayed there three times. We had stayed in several houses earlier in our two and a half decades of summers on Peaks, we know Peaks well, and can tell you this is one of thte most modern houses available for rent there. The beach is right there and, yes, you have access to it. We leave our kayaks right there on the lawn above the sands. It is true, the stove could use replacing. Hard to read the dials and get it working properly. Perhaps that's been changed by the time you read this. But all else is top notch, including the TV & Blu ray player for those cozy nights of film viewing. And - most importantly - the porch is expansive for viewing the islands, the weather, passing ferries and sunsets. It's the best movie there is!

Experienced VRBO renter very disappointed in this rental

  • 1 of 5
I am sorry to say I cannot recommend this rental property.
The main problem is safety issues. There is an unsafe balcony and we were warned not to walk on a part of the deck. There are many exposed outlets.
The kitchen stove -- that looks so nice in the photos -- doesn't really work. You can't read the dials to set oven or burners, and if you use the grill the fan shakes the stove so violently that pot lids shake right off the pots.
The place was not very clean, not really dirty but low level grimy. We washed all the bath mats on day 2. Thank heavens for the deck, we spent the entire time out there so as to avoid being in the house.
The owner did not mention that we needed to bring sheets, so we had a mad dash back to the mainland for them when we arrived.
I won't comment on the style of the property, as clutter and the like are matters of personal taste, but there is a bit of a junk yard in the rear. Again not a place for kids.
Lastly, there seems to be an issue about beach access. The house is on a right of way to the beach (which is fairly busy for Peaks) but that does not mean you can use the beach, which is private. It means you can walk onto the beach, but then you have to walk quite a long way to a beach that is open to the public. And the neighbors do chase people off their beach.

Owner's Response: Experienced VRBO renter is very disapointed in this tenant
Let me begin by clarifying something. I too am an experienced VRBO renter. That is we both have cottages on Peaks Island to rent. This all about the money. When I discussed this with Alicia she told me she wouldn't have written it if I hadn't witheld $135.00 from her security deposit for excess cleaning.
She left our cottage filthy. Our vacum canister was filled with the dirt and sand from the bedrooms upstairs and there was no surface inside our refrigerator that wasn't smeared with food residue etc. It took 2 people 4 hours to clean the cottage. She agreed when she signed our short term rental contract to leave our cottage in substantialy the same condition that existed when she moved in. She did not. I don't wonder she chose to spend most of her time on the porch.
The so called exposed oulets are surface mounted in steel boxes and are UL approved with the appropiate covers.
The unsafe balcony is very small with low railings. It's only purpose today is decorative. Doors open onto this balcony from the master bedroom and the loft area. They have screen doors that have double locks on them in order to provide additional ventilation with the doors open.
We have never told anyone they couldn't walk on an area of the front porch. We replaced some of the porch furniture. At that time we discoverd an area about six inches in diameter in the decking that was soft. since it fell under the old swing and the new love seat. I cautioned them not to move that piece of furniture.
The Stove Does realy work in every sense. We have since replaced the Knobs that were hard to read. Tho' the stove vibrates when the fan is first turned on We couldn't get it to shake the lids off pots on the stove.
Our contract clearly states that Linens and towels are NOT supplied.
Our Deeded right of way to the beach is 30 feet wide and the beach in front of the right of way is enough for most people. The property across the right of way includes the beach to low water mark. The property of the red house on the left of the right of way stops at the top their bank. They do not own the beach in front of their property. The large "public" beach referred to is less than a 3 minute walk along the beach.
I have four coverd boats and an antique auto in the side yard. that hardly constitutes a Junk yard.

Location, location, location!

  • 4 of 5
We spent the majority of our time on the front porch, under shade with great views of the ocean. The porch also had a gate which we used to block the stairs and resulted in an enclosed space for our new puppy. We stayed at the end of July and truly enjoyed our vacation. The location is just perfect - steps from the beach.

Lack of Transparency

  • 1 of 5
Russ should have informed us that the VIEW from the porch is OBSTRUCTED by a 20 ft construction dumpster and by 2-4 vehicles during the work week. All day Friday the crew worked to fill an already full Dumpster, load vehicles with scrap lumber and remove aluminum scaffolding from an 8 month long project on the neighbors property in FRONT of Russ's property.
The housje is in disrepair and would not pass code as a rental. I wish I could send a picture of the electrical outlet beside the master bedroom with exposed metal box ( the lamp didn't work so I couldn't see my clothes or read in bed.) The railing on back porch was rotting and loose. The eyesores!!!! The skylight above the stove in kitchen was unfinished water stained wood and calcified panes; the front panel of the drop_in jennair range was missing; outside there were unsitely views into the ground level storage.
The beds were old and uncomfortable. My grandson 7 could feel the springs on his bed.
The new sterns and foster has couple patches and is so hard we put a camping mat over it. We were all thankful the toilets worked and the washer and dryer. The drier drum had scream when it is running, however.
The house is cluttered. The master bedroom has king size bed, cardboard 4x6 free standing closet, 2 old wood chairs an antique love seat a dresser and 2 night stands!

I felt ripped_off. I ask Russ for some money back considering that we were not informed of the construction. He is unable to return any money at this time.
All this said, we still love Peaks and we enjoyed sandy beach and city view beach and the kayaking and the cafe and Cockeyed Gull down front.

Owner's Response: We'd like to thank our guests for sharing their concerns with us.
We feel we should point out that this is the first negative review we have had in the two years we have been with VRBO Our New England shingled cottage is over a hundred years old and we think it has a lot of wonderful characteristics not to mention the best location on the Island. Some people of course prefer a more modern inviroment. We had the roof re-shingled this year and had planned on installing new skylights in the kitchen and bath. Unfortunatly the weather made it impossible to install them before the first guests arrived. We will be putting the skyligts in this fall. We have no control over properly permitted construction projects in our neighborhood. It appears the current project is winding down. Mr. Sterns and Mr. foster tell me their beds are not hard. Thr proper term is firm. Thank you for taking time to read this, Russ and Shirley

Wonderful getaway

  • 5 of 5
Russ is very nice, but one thing he is not is a photographer. The photos posted for the house do not do it justice. I wish this review tool had the ability for me to post a picture!

By far, the best part of the house is the back porch. Huge. We spent most of our time on the porch. When we planned our week, we initially thought we would go into Portland a few times, but we couldn't drag ourselves away from the tranquility of the back porch. From it you have a rolling grass yard with huge shade trees that ends at the beach. It is simply ideal. The afternoon naps on the porch can't be beat.

When we did go into Portland for our one afternoon and dinner it was great. We have a dog and took her with us and there is a Wonderful dog park with a dog beach at the East Prominade, walking distance from the ferry. On your return walk, stop by the blue spoon and you can eat on the patio (sidewalk seating) with your dog and the food is excellent.

We will definitely come again when we need to recharge our batteries. Great place shift gears and slow your pace. (That said, I had excellent phone and iPad connections so I could work when needed.)

Tip for other guests - not sure if it is mentioned in the listing, but there is one king, one queen and two twins. We didn't realize there would be the option of a king bed (nicer/bigger bedroom) and only brought linens for the Queen. If you have king linens, bring them.
