A Turn of the Century Shingled cottage, Tastefully renovated with winding stair cases, 3 Bedrooms, Loft & a Sterns & Foster sleep sofa in the living room Sleeps 8. 2 Baths open concept down stairs with modern Kitchen. Located in a quiet section of Peaks Island away from the hustle and bustle of the village yet only a 15 min. walk to, it's resturants, library, shops, grocery store, lobster shack, bike rental, Art stutios, filling station Health Center, Churches and more. We are also close to our tennis, sailing, and social club. and of course the famous 'Rock Bound Cost of Maine' on our back shore with its panoramic views of the open ocean and the outer islands of Casco Bay which makes a wonderful place for Surf fishing, picnicking, cookouts, barbeques and lobster bakes. Nearly the entire back shore is in the public domain.

This has been Russ & Shirley's home since 1969. We raised our four children here. It began as a summer cottage and has long since become our year round home. We are both now retired and spend our summers in the Willard Beach area in South Portland where we take care of our granddaughter, Aminah. We had previously considered selling our property but due to our great success with VRBO we have taken it off the market.

Relaxing and Great Sunsets!

Thanks, Russ, for a very relaxing week. The sunsets from your porch are amazing. This is probably my fifth stay on the island, and this was the nicest place I've stayed. My daughter especially loved our treasure hunt for all the wood animal statues.

Should not be rented

The location is indeed perfect. The kitchen is not equipped to cook . There are not enough pots or pans to serve a family of 4. The stove top is so old that the numbers on the handles needed to be written in with magic marker. The house is filled with unnecessary decorations that just get in the way. The kitchen window leaked all over the sill. There were leaks in the upstairs bedrooms. The pull out couch was not fit to sleep on. The neighbors on both sides were rude and complained about us using the beach. There has been issues with the one neighbor as she told us for years. The closets in one of the bedrooms was made of cardboard. There was not enough lamps or lighting to read at night. The owners have not put any money back into fixing the rental at all. The porch needs tons of work along with painting. The washer and dryer did work fine. The beach was great but the neighbors were awful. We were not loud or did not have any parities and they were the rudest people I have ever met. Their is definitely a problem with those who rent and those who do not on this island. I would never pay that money to stay there again. I am amazed at the reviews that are listed here. The fact that we struggled to cook every night due to the lack of pots and pans made me furious. Never again. we have used vrbo many times and this was one of the worst experiences. We managed to have a good time, but would not recommend. We received our deposit right away without a problem. When we did called about the lack of utensils and cookware they sent us into the a closet that had some much junk it we never found what we needed. We also own a rental on a lake and would never leave our renters without the kitchen essentials needed.

Owner's Response: Frankly were puzzeld as to why Lou Ann waited since July of last year to post her comments. But it does give us an opportunity to point out to future Guests that we havent been unresponsive to the needs of our guest. Since Lou Ann stayed here, we have put on a new roof, we have new porch funiture, the Jenn Air has new knobs and works just fine, we bought new lamps for the bed rooms and we have the materials on sight to replace the kitchen and bathroom sky lights as soon as weather permits. Please note we have two five star reviews and one four star review since last July.

This property has one of the best views on the island! My girlfriend and I rented this property in 2013, 2014 and a future booking in 2015. We intend to come back year after year as long as it is available! Located on the beach and near (but not to close) to the center of the island community, this place is awesome!. If you are looking for a real island home and a great time I would recommend this place. Sit on the porch for hours watching boat traffic and the breathtaking views.

One of the best houses

Despite what one reviewer, below, wrote, the house is modern, safe and clean. We've stayed there three times. We had stayed in several houses earlier in our two and a half decades of summers on Peaks, we know Peaks well, and can tell you this is one of thte most modern houses available for rent there. The beach is right there and, yes, you have access to it. We leave our kayaks right there on the lawn above the sands. It is true, the stove could use replacing. Hard to read the dials and get it working properly. Perhaps that's been changed by the time you read this. But all else is top notch, including the TV & Blu ray player for those cozy nights of film viewing. And - most importantly - the porch is expansive for viewing the islands, the weather, passing ferries and sunsets. It's the best movie there is!

Experienced VRBO renter very disappointed in this rental

I am sorry to say I cannot recommend this rental property.

The main problem is safety issues. There is an unsafe balcony and we were warned not to walk on a part of the deck. There are many exposed outlets.

The kitchen stove -- that looks so nice in the photos -- doesn't really work. You can't read the dials to set oven or burners, and if you use the grill the fan shakes the stove so violently that pot lids shake right off the pots.

The place was not very clean, not really dirty but low level grimy. We washed all the bath mats on day 2. Thank heavens for the deck, we spent the entire time out there so as to avoid being in the house.

The owner did not mention that we needed to bring sheets, so we had a mad dash back to the mainland for them when we arrived.

I won't comment on the style of the property, as clutter and the like are matters of personal taste, but there is a bit of a junk yard in the rear. Again not a place for kids.

Lastly, there seems to be an issue about beach access. The house is on a right of way to the beach (which is fairly busy for Peaks) but that does not mean you can use the beach, which is private. It means you can walk onto the beach, but then you have to walk quite a long way to a beach that is open to the public. And the neighbors do chase people off their beach.

Owner's Response: Experienced VRBO renter is very disapointed in this tenant This all about the money. When I discussed this with Alicia she told me she wouldn't have written it if I hadn't witheld $135.00 from her security deposit for excess cleaning. She left our cottage filthy. Our vacum canister was filled with the dirt and sand from the bedrooms upstairs and there was no surface inside our refrigerator that wasn't smeared with food residue etc. It took 2 people 4 hours to clean the cottage. She agreed when she signed our short term rental contract to leave our cottage in substantialy the same condition that existed when she moved in. She did not. I don't wonder she chose to spend most of her time on the porch. The so called exposed oulets are surface mounted in steel boxes and are UL approved with the appropiate covers. The unsafe balcony is very small with low railings. It's only purpose today is decorative. Doors open onto this balcony from the master bedroom and the loft area. They have screen doors that have double locks on them in order to provide additional ventilation with the doors open. We have never told anyone they couldn't walk on an area of the front porch. We replaced some of the porch furniture. At that time we discoverd an area about six inches in diameter in the decking that was soft. since it fell under the old swing and the new love seat. I cautioned them not to move that piece of furniture. The Stove Does realy work in every sense. We have since replaced the Knobs that were hard to read. Tho' the stove vibrates slightly when the fan is first turned on, we couldn't get it to shake the lids off pots on the stove. Our contract clearly states that Linens and towels are NOT supplied. Our Deeded right of way to the beach is 30 feet wide and the beach in front of the right of way is enough for most people. The large "public" beach referred to is less than a 3 minute walk along the beach. Most important is our contract requires in Para. 7-b "If premisis appear dirty or damaged upon check-in, guest shall inform homeowner immediatly." If it was as bad as Alicia alleges we should have recieved a call when they moved in. We Did Not.

Location, location, location!

We spent the majority of our time on the front porch, under shade with great views of the ocean. The porch also had a gate which we used to block the stairs and resulted in an enclosed space for our new puppy. We stayed at the end of July and truly enjoyed our vacation. The location is just perfect - steps from the beach.
