The sunniest and hottest seaside village?:
Paul do Mar is one of the sunniest and hottest seaside villages in Madeira. Until the late 1960s you could only access this fishing village by boat. Popular activities in and around the village are: mountain walks, fishing, swimming, snorkelling and surfing. Also, the village is quite flat for Madeira, which is generally hilly and mountainous so it’s easy to walk around, roller-skate and cycle especially along the oceanfront. In the Spring and Summer there are many ‘festas’ (festivals) and the streets are alive with different languages as the locals who live and work abroad return home to relax with family and friends!
Everything you need!:
The village has a small supermarket, bakery and pastry shop near the Catholic Church, a couple of shops in the centre, a bank with a cash machine, medical centre, and bars/cafes and restaurants in its 5 quarters. It is one of the most important fishing centres in the island with a new harbour opened in 1994. Swimming is easy from certain points including a slipway at one end of the village and a beach next to the harbour, 50 metres from Ocean House. In Calheta town (10 minutes drive away) is a yacht marina where dolphin-watching, whale-watching and big game fishing boats operate from, white sandy beaches, an international art centre 'Casa das Mudas' which stages performances and exhibitions and small shopping centres and a supermarket. From Ribeira Brava easy access to North Coast: Sao Vicente, Porto Moniz.
