We are John and Jeanne. John grew up in Arizona and Jeanne in California in the San Francisco Bay Area. We have lived on the Big Island since 1998. We currently live in Leilani Estates, which is only 15 minutes from the ocean house. The ocean house is located in Hawaiian Paradise Park in Keaau on the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii on Kaloli Point. We love it here and you will too.
Jeanne or John Vurich purchased this house in 1998
When John first came to Hawaii before we had met he just fell in love with it. When Jeanne came into his life we were in the process of building our home in Leilani Estates when we found this piece of wonderful ocean property. Both of us being Pisces we love the water and just had to build a home on the ocean. Never looked back since. We lived at the ocean house for four years and then decided to move back to Leilani which is on an acre and gave our two dogs a lot more running room and us a larger area to grow trees and plants.
We purchased the land on which this home was built in 1998 and designed it ourselves. We love large, spacious rooms and we believe this home reflects that open-aired feeling.
What a great house! Yes, I had seen the pictures on vrbo, but my jaw dropped when I saw it in real life. And so thoughtfully appointed with everything they could think of that you might want. The surf pounding the cliffs just beyond the hot tub is unforgettable. My biggest regret is that we planned too many activities away from the house when it is an attraction unto itself. The only negative thing I will say is that in an area with so much rain, a "solar heated pool" is sort of just "an outdoor pool," but the cold dip was good for waking up!
Really enjoyed the outside amenities - pool, hot tub, grill and out door furniture. Beautiful home! Little extras available including cooler, sun screen, laundry soap that where not included at other places we've rented. Great location for exploring volcano national park & east side of island, long drive to Kona.
3 of us stayed in the "surf shack" for 4 nights. The house is clean and comfortable. We were delighted by pods of whales daily right off the back deck. The only thing I would change is to stay longer next time.
Truthfully, we were not able to stay at this beautiful home. We were booked to have our wedding here, which happened to be two days before Iselle hit. The owners could not have been more helpful in the planning of our wedding and vacation.
They found extra accommodations, homes within walking distance, for our other guests, told us the best way to have items delivered to the island.
In short, they were wonderful.
We recommend this place VERY highly.
The view and location were perfect for us. We were 30 minutes away from Hilo, 10 minutes away from Pahoa and a few from Kea'au. We like staying in Paradise Park because of the quiet, relaxing environment and the view of the coast is amazing. We could see black crabs and sea turtles from the back area. The house was large with a huge open kitchen and living room concept. It had great WIFI for our teenager! Outside tables have been added for larger groups. If you have never stayed on the Hilo side of the island, air conditioning is not usually available, but the coastal breeze was wonderful. I think the house could use a little "love" in as far as work being done, engineers (electrical or mechanical) or a handyman would have MAJOR issues. Lights being out, doors off tracks, repair work not up to code are some examples. We survived and made great memories.
My wife and I with our year and a half old daughter spent 2 weeks at this vacation rental. My mother spent 3 weeks here as well, all told we rented for a month. The location is extraordinary. Right on the water, you can hear the ocean waves crashing all day and night. The pool was perfect. Large, clean. The hot tub was also clean and sheltered in case you wanted to enjoy time during the occasional downpour.
The home was great for a young child as we could allow her to roam the patio without fear of her falling into the pool. The bedrooms are huge, both with good sized tvs and adequate channels. Wi-fi also was good, allowing me to stream HD on my tablet. The downside there was no wifi signal by the pool. Without A/C, heat was only occasionally an issue, the winds blow right through the house, strong enough to cool but not disturb. Fans in all rooms.
The BBQ was brand new and the home features all the amenities / utensils etc., that are listed and you would expect. We cooked most of our meals there. Hilo, and most sightseeing adventures on that side of the island are within a 30 min drive. I would suggest getting most of your groceries at Wal-mart and there is an outdoor market for fresh fruit and vegetables.
John and Jeanne were exceptionally helpful in answering any questions we had and any concerns were addressed immediately. They provided us with golf clubs on request, the ladies clubs are a brand new pair of Wilson clubs (I literally pulled the plastic off the irons) and the mens are an older (10+ years) set. There aren't many courses close (one in Volcano, one in Hilo) however the rentals at Volcano were only slightly better.
The most amazing thing about the property IS the location. It is VERY private, though the occasional local is seen combing the lava rock. The ocean is not suitable for swimming and no beach is available, it really is for looking at only. However, with the pool this isn't an issue at all. I felt the design of the home was slightly "different", the bedrooms aren't set up really to accomodate a large group and there's no real living area to "hang out" together in as the kitchen table seats 4 and the main living area has only a sofa and coffee table. All in all, no more than 2 small families (parents and 1, MAYBE 2 kids) would be the absolute maximum. For us, (Grandma, Parents and one kid) it was prefect.
The description and pictures etc., are exactly as described.
