We are John and Jeanne. John grew up in Arizona and Jeanne in California in the San Francisco Bay Area. We have lived on the Big Island since 1998. We currently live in Leilani Estates, which is only 15 minutes from the ocean house. The ocean house is located in Hawaiian Paradise Park in Keaau on the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii on Kaloli Point. We love it here and you will too.

Jeanne or John Vurich purchased this house in 1998

When John first came to Hawaii before we had met he just fell in love with it. When Jeanne came into his life we were in the process of building our home in Leilani Estates when we found this piece of wonderful ocean property. Both of us being Pisces we love the water and just had to build a home on the ocean. Never looked back since. We lived at the ocean house for four years and then decided to move back to Leilani which is on an acre and gave our two dogs a lot more running room and us a larger area to grow trees and plants.

We purchased the land on which this home was built in 1998 and designed it ourselves. We love large, spacious rooms and we believe this home reflects that open-aired feeling.

EXCELLENT LOCATION!

  • 4 of 5
My wife and I with our year and a half old daughter spent 2 weeks at this vacation rental. My mother spent 3 weeks here as well, all told we rented for a month. The location is extraordinary. Right on the water, you can hear the ocean waves crashing all day and night. The pool was perfect. Large, clean. The hot tub was also clean and sheltered in case you wanted to enjoy time during the occasional downpour.

The home was great for a young child as we could allow her to roam the patio without fear of her falling into the pool. The bedrooms are huge, both with good sized tvs and adequate channels. Wi-fi also was good, allowing me to stream HD on my tablet. The downside there was no wifi signal by the pool. Without A/C, heat was only occasionally an issue, the winds blow right through the house, strong enough to cool but not disturb. Fans in all rooms.

The BBQ was brand new and the home features all the amenities / utensils etc., that are listed and you would expect. We cooked most of our meals there. Hilo, and most sightseeing adventures on that side of the island are within a 30 min drive. I would suggest getting most of your groceries at Wal-mart and there is an outdoor market for fresh fruit and vegetables.

John and Jeanne were exceptionally helpful in answering any questions we had and any concerns were addressed immediately. They provided us with golf clubs on request, the ladies clubs are a brand new pair of Wilson clubs (I literally pulled the plastic off the irons) and the mens are an older (10+ years) set. There aren't many courses close (one in Volcano, one in Hilo) however the rentals at Volcano were only slightly better.

The most amazing thing about the property IS the location. It is VERY private, though the occasional local is seen combing the lava rock. The ocean is not suitable for swimming and no beach is available, it really is for looking at only. However, with the pool this isn't an issue at all. I felt the design of the home was slightly "different", the bedrooms aren't set up really to accomodate a large group and there's no real living area to "hang out" together in as the kitchen table seats 4 and the main living area has only a sofa and coffee table. All in all, no more than 2 small families (parents and 1, MAYBE 2 kids) would be the absolute maximum. For us, (Grandma, Parents and one kid) it was prefect.

The description and pictures etc., are exactly as described.

SPECTACULAR RENTAL HOME WITH AMAZING POOL AND VIEWS

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I spent a week at this wonderful home. John and Jeanne are quick to reply to emails and answer questions. They went above and beyond with hospitality and made their rental feel like we were coming to a home.

The house is well maintained and clean. Upper and lower decks offer unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean. The kitchen is wonderful. Double oven, microwave, 5 burner gas grill inside, smaller BBQ grill outside, huge fridge, all necessary utensils and two large sinks for cleaning up. We ate breakfast and dinner every night on the covered upper deck. Cruise ships sailed by on two nights.

The pool is amazing. It is so private with a vacant treed lot on one side and the neighboring house sitting far back on the other. You can’t be seen by anyone unless they would come up to stare over the walls, which would be a feat in itself as they are fairly high. Perfect for sunbathing and unencumbered swimming. You truly feel alone. Can even swim at night as the pool is warm enough. Hot tub was perfect for relaxing after long walks in Volcano Park. Amazed how it stayed 103 degrees with the solar power.

A little warm and humid during the day, but it cooled down nicely at night. We even used an extra comforter on two nights. Plenty of windows for circulation and there are ceiling fans in all rooms. We never missed not having a/c.

Best sleep I have had in years. The soothing breezes and ocean waves crashing against the lava cliffs are so relaxing. Master bath very spacious and the large shower shown in the pictures is great.

Travelling back and forth to the house was no problem. We even drove one night in a major rain storm. Remember the speed in HPP is 35 and not 55 and you should have no problem.

Keaau is 10 min away with a grocery store. Hilo is a 20 min drive and Volcano parks only 40 minutes. The fruits and veggies we picked up at the Hilo farmers market were awesome. Be sure to pick up some fresh cut flowers there also.

This house is a great place to get away from the world. Not for the hotel set that needs wait staff, fancy restaurants and concierges, but that is not how I like to travel. It is a great base for exploring the east side of Hawaii. The pictures do not do the house justice. It really is a slice of paradise. I’d come back here in an instant.

Activities: Volcano Park, Hilo, Hilo farmer’s market, Kona (long drive), Panalu’u black sand beach, Akatsuka Orchid Gardens, Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens

FABULOUS OCEANFRONT HOME

  • 5 of 5
The house was wonderful! Fantastic view of the ocean! You hear nothing but waves crashing on the cliffs in front & can feel the ocean spray. The house is spacious & comfortable with windows allowing nothing but the ocean view from the kitchen & living area. We originally booked 3 nights & at the last minute decided to add a 4th night & the owners gladly accommodated us! The owners gladly shipped clothing that was left by accident! Fantastic home & people!!

GREAT PLACE

  • 4 of 5
We loved staying here. Owners were quick to reply and very friendly, helpful. Liked having the pool/hot tub and loved the great view every morning for coffee... even spotted turtles. House was easy to find and a great location for what we wanted to do. It was easy to get to town, national park and beaches. Everything was clean when we arrived. Kitchen had necessities. The only problem we encountered was not having air conditioning, it was a little damp and warm most nights. We loved eating at Kaleo's in Pahoa, wish we had discovered it sooner. If you want to see lava - the hike out is a must! It is a bit of a trek, but get to stand right up next to it and feel the heat, stay and watch and take as many pics as want, etc. it is well worth it... boat tours were getting tossed around a LOT! Had a wonderful time. Wish it wasn't so far for us or we'd be back more often!

OHANA KAUHALE

  • 5 of 5
Not only is this a great place for a family but also to have some alone time. I experienced both. The pictures of this home do not do it justice. There is no way to capture the beauty of the surroundings and the ocean. The interior of the home is as described with plenty of room and a very large kitchen. But who wants to stay inside in HAWAII. This home draws you outdoors. Large lani, large pool, hot tub and large area of lava to sit on with crashing waves from the ocean. We viewed Whales each day we were there and captured some awesome photos of the whales and sunrises. DO NOT PUT SOAP IN THE HOT TUB. One of the previous renters did this but the owner had it cleaned out and we had to wait till the next day to get in. No worries though we still enjoyed the hot tub. You must go to Pahoa town to the restaurants there and most importantly to see how the local people LIVE ALOHA. I love Hawaii, the local people here smile, are very gracious and it always draws me back. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay. Lord willing I would like to come back to this Ohana Kauhale.
