My husband and I moved to Colorado from Massachusetts in 2006. After spending years on the coast we wanted some mountain living, designed and built our home on Hasting Mesa which we moved into in 2009. It is a custom solar home with all the creature comforts.
The San Juan Mountains we have found to be one of the most beautiful in Colorado with the vibrant town of Telluride not too far down the road.
Joanna Chechile purchased this house in 2009
For those who love the outdoor mountain life we offer the perfect vacation getaway in the San Juan Mountains. Hiking & mountain biking are available outside our door or a mere drive away. We are just a 40 minute drive over Last Dollar Road to Telluride and 22 minutes down mountain to Ridgway. Access the San Juans from our home, soak in the Orvis Hot Springs after a long day hiking or biking or just sit and gaze at the mountains. Get away from your city hectic life for some relaxing quiet mountain air, complete with beautiful scenery and wildlife.
You are away from the craze of city life surrounded by the beauty nature.
We fell in love with the San Juan Mountains and decided to settle in the middle of it all. We offer awesome access for biking & hiking, beautiful views of North Pole Peak and quiet mornings in the porch swing with your coffee & favorite book.
For those who love mountain living or need a total retreat from their city life for vacation this is an excellent spot to spend some time. We have tried to create a home of comfort and relaxation for ourselves and hope to be able to share with others as we spend time away.
Although it is an off grid with alternative power we are sure you will find it perfect for your time there.
We spent a week at this cabin in September. We found it to be just as advertised and very clean and comfortable. A wonderful place to get away from it all.
Great remote location with peace and quiet and great mountain views, yet an easy drive to Telluride, Ridgeway, and Ouray. This is a beautiful and comfortable home which was perfect for a romantic, peaceful getaway. We would definitely recommend this wonderful property to others.
This was an absolutely amazing place to stay--beautiful, isolated, pet-friendly. We stayed with our dog. It's so quiet up here--without all the noise of civilization or even living on a grid. The home was clean and well-maintained; while we were there, we heard from the owners briefly just to make sure that everything was okay.
The house itself is beautiful, and the pictures don't do justice to how lovely the space is. So often owners of these properties use fish-eye lenses to exaggerate the size; this house felt so much bigger than the pictures looked. The kitchen is huge and well-appointed; the house is bright with natural light, and replete with details that make it feel like home.
The internet access was a bonus--but as a warning, if you have to do work that requires you to be online constantly, if an afternoon thunderstorm rolls in, you might be interrupted. But you don't go to a place like this is you HAVE to have internet access.
All in all, I would definitely come here again. An absolutely amazing home.
My wife and daughter and I stayed in this amazing cabin from July 6-14 of this year (2013). What a great place. The location is outstanding, beautiful meadows and fabulous surrounding mountains. But the cabin is the priceless gem of the trip. Decorated beautifully, and perfectly suited and fitted for the Colorado Rockies. We enjoyed mornings out on the porch drinking our tea and reading, soaking in the surrounding splendor. The sleeping situation is very comfortable, and the kitchen is perfect for whatever needs cooking. My wife and daughter made sure we enjoyed our meals!
We had many - many elk all around the cabin. And their was a doe with her few days old fawn staying right off of the porch! We got to know them well.
So much to do in the area. We are hikers and took hikes every day. Blue Lakes and Blaine Basin were two of our favorites. Fun times too in Ridgway, Telluride (even the farmer's market) and Quray. Even Montross and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison were in easy driving distance.
Joanna made things so easy for us in our reservations and even after our stay. She was thoughtful and considerate, and we greatly were assisted by the info she passed along.
We would highly recommend this great cabin.

My wife and I hadn't been back to Telluride since our honeymoon several years ago. Therefore, to spend just over a week on Hastings Mesa was perfect. I had handled finding a place to rent and she wanted to be suprised so she never looked at any of the pictures. So when we pulled up, she was so happy with what she saw. The setting is amazing and the attention to detail with the house made it that much better. We both agreed that it seemed like an Italian farmhouse meets the Rockies. It is also worth noting how clean it was and we are both, self-admittedly, a bit obsessive about those things. We timed our trip with Bluegrass and given the property is out of Telluride about 40-ish minutes, we knew were were going to do some bluegrass, some biking and a whole lot of relaxing. The average day was either popping into Telluride or Ridgway...or if we felt like doing nothing, we would hang out and play some music, lounge around on the patio, bbq and occasionally get some logs going in the fireplace. Ridgway is a great place to get groceries and if you feel like getting a bite to eat, it is only about 20 minutes away. In addition, you get to take a look at the edge of Ralph Lauren's estate as you drive into town. The size of the estate and scenery is pretty impressive!
We mainly cooked at the house, but on our way out of town [via Ridgway] we stopped at Kate's place and found out they cook breakfast all day. The service and food were great. Unfortunately, I still needed to get some work done while there and the wifi worked perfectly. Fortunately, we didn't have much luck with cell reception directly at the house...but that is what made the house even better. There is a booster for Verizon (I believe), but I never cared to check. If you can't leave the cell addiction at home, you can always drive down the road a bit, but I think most people will find it pretty refreshing. So outside of groceries, beer and wine...you never need to leave as everything else is provided. If you are curious about the setting, just look at the opening title shots of the original 1969 True Grit movie. Just beyond the homestead is the road to the property. It is a special place!
Last, but not least, Joanna is great to work with. The description of the property is very accurate and it couldn't have worked out better. She has a listing of contacts in case anything popped up, but nothing did. With that said, thank you for sharing your home! We'll definitely be back! Cheers!
Our home is located in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. Approx. 22 minutes to Ridgway on highway 62 and 40 minutes to Telluride off Last Dollar Road on Hasting Mesa. We are situated behind Last Dollar Ranch at the base of the Mountains and North Pole Peak, with access to National Forest trails for hiking. For the avid mountain biker, hiker, climber or just all around outdoors person who loves the mountains our home is a perfect get away & vacation spot. Just lay around and enjoy the view, get on your mountain bike or stretch your legs for a vigorous hike. We are close to trails by foot or short car ride, Blue lakes, Sneffels Mt., Owl Creek Pass, Ophir Pass, Imogene Pass and Lizard Head Peak are but a few areas easily accessed from our area. Go to Telluride for weekend festivals, music in Mountain village or just dinner. Soak in the hot spring at Orvis in Ridgway. There are rivers and lakes for great fishing, rafting companies in Ridgway to take you on a rafting trip and within a three hour drive you can visit Mesa Verde National Park, Arches and Canyonlands.
