Pahoa Estate Rental Photos and Description

Private, 2 Bedroom, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4+) but still perfect for 2

Our Big Island home, near Pahoa Hawaii, is a unique, custom-built round, house located in a clearing at the top of a long approach hill, on ten acres of completely secluded rain forest. It is completely private and in a very relaxed setting. The house is solar powered and equipped with all modern comforts and appliances. It has a spacious 500 sq ft. bedroom with a queen sized bed and double sleeper upstairs. Upstairs floor features huge kitchen, living room, with 3 sets of french doors that open onto a huge outdoor living room/ lanai/ dining room with extra sleeping space on the deck for visitors and friends. The open-plan design works for a family, or small group, or for just two people. There is lots of art in our home, which is used just for guests, friends or exchangers, and it is beautifully, comfortably and completely furnished for your use during your stay. Cleaning services are available for a reasonable fee from our year-round, nearby caretaker.

The house will be beautifully prepared for you, and all ready for your tropical stay. Cleanliness is a most important part of your guest experience. Our home is equipped with washer and dryer.

The kitchen is exceptionally well-equipped for dining and cooking, as we love to cook and when we vacation there ourselves and we always shop and cook locally, with fresh ingredients.

We provide directions to our guests for doing the same locally, including all the special, nearby 'farmers markets,' and also info. on favorite places to dine nearby. Our open-style home has no need for AC, just the beautiful Trade winds and sea breezes that blow up the hill, gently, and throughout the house, though we have tropical ceiling fans. The keynote here is 'comfort first' even though all furnishings are artistic and appealing. Bring a book or two to enjoy in the hammock! This is pure relaxation, which we all need, and love!

I built this custom home over six years, with carefully selected Eco-friendly materials, and methods. It is 'off the grid' and has it's own fresh water supply and the electrical is all solar powered. It is an 'indoor/outdoor' open stye home perfect for the year round mild Hawaiin climate with three sets of french doors that open out from the main great room onto a large 800 squae foot Ipe' deck under an extended roof where you will lounge comfortably barbecue, read in the giant hammock or enjoy our outdoor living room, and outdoor dining table.

Sharon Dodge purchased this estate in 2012

The house is luxurious in look and feel, and is at the end of the road at the top of the hill on a gorgeous ten acre parcel and if you want, you will have no visitors. It is perfect seclusion in a setting of great natural beauty , and is all your own, while you are there. You will not be disturbed by anyone. And except for visiting the local sites -warm thermal ponds, Mauna Kea Observatory, ocean swimming, gardens, waterfalls, and volcano, you will not want to leave. This is the relaxed lush side of the Big Island and ours is the perfect place for lovers, friends or even individuals who want to truly get away from it all. A day and a night often feels like three, as time slows down for you there. Perfect counterpoint to the more touristed parts of this or any Hawaiin island stay.

You will awaken to birdsong, a chorus at dawn and go to sleep to gentle sounds of the melodic tree frogs in the forst. The sun rises on one one side of our deck and sets on the other. Restful.

Or.. you can crank up your music on the sound system as loud as you like. There is no one near enough to be bothered! Your private paradise for a relaxing stay. The master bedroom on the lower floor is roomy, over 500 square feet and the queen bed is so comfortable you will wish you could take it home with you. All bedding is luxury quality. A lot of people believe you sleep deeper and dream more, in a round house. We have found it to be true out there in our tropical 'piece o' paradise'.

Unique rainforest retreat

My wife and I spent 4 relaxing days at the end of January in this wonderfully interesting and amazingly well equipped rainforest retreat (but it only rained at night). Going to bed to the sound of the frogs (they quit before midnight) and waking up to birdsong made for very restful sleeps. Breakfast on the deck was a fabulous way to start the day. Everything worked as advertised, although we didn't try the TV or music systems. The photos are accurate, but there is less shrubbery now. The layout is not going to be anything like what you are used to: the only way to go from the downstairs master bedroom to the kitchen and dining area upstairs is via outside stairs. However it is perfectly suitable for the climate and location (nobody else in sight) The property was generally clean and well maintained. We encountered no insects, day or night.
The house is isolated but Sharon's directions were perfect, even in the dark.
This is a relaxed corner of the Big Island. Even on the weekend we had no trouble finding parking to snorkel in the tide pools at Kapoho and soak at Ahalanui. It's a bit over an hour up to the Volcano National Park and about half an hour into Hilo, although traffic was often very slow between Pahoa and Kea'au. Pahoa Town is funky and laid-back. We didn't spend enough time to get into the flow but we did eat very well in Paolo's.
I would certainly be glad to stay here again and recommend it to friends.

Tropical Paradise!

I am writing this review sitting on the balcony of the Tropical Round House, listening to the gentle sounds of the surrounding rainforest, wondering how on earth I'm going to summon up the energy to return to "normal life" at the end of this trip!

If you are looking for a wonderful, secluded property set in a beautiful location then the Round House is for you. The property looks exactly like the photos - is spotlessly clean and tidy, and very well equiped and maintained. Loly and Sharon have been fabulously helpful in answering our questions and organising little extras such as the breakfast pack, and their pack of local information is very accurate and up to date.

In our opinion, this location is perfect as it is on the "pretty" side of the Island, with easy access to many attractions (including the fabulous lava flows in to the sea).

We would wholeheartedly recommend this property to other, independent travellers and look forward to returning one day.

The roadmap provided to the round house is very good and mandatory at night (we succeed even if had some doubts ) .

A very useful and accurate booklet is provided.
The advises we tested from the booklet are OK : Thai restaurant and Fresh Fish are very good .

Very good support from Sharon (by email and SMS )

The House is very clean and well equiped . The only surprise is the lack of window shutter , it is not a problem but not indicated in the description (but it is obvious on pictures on the web site !).
We feel alone in a forest but less than 10 minutes drive from a very nice small town (no problem with supplies) or from the ocean . Very pleasant to enjoy breakfast on the 2nd floor deck .

It is the first time I used a "green spirit" house : It works . Quite strange to have every modern appliances without beeing connected to electricity network .
And happy to live shoe free in the house .

About Mauna Kea :
It seems that Harper is the only car rental compagny to allows to use saddle road and the road to the summit .
It is a great moment to climb to see sunset and then enjoys star lights all over you (very very warm clothes are mandatory)

Please , enjoy the warm pond :

Only 10 mn drive from the house
People in the pond are very cool and friendly
But be prepared to be bite by very small fishs (surprizing the first time)

Enjoy fresh fruits : for example pineapples and small bananas are a delight .

Take care that many thinks are forbiden when you go back to Continental us ( vegetables, fruits, ...) . We had to say goodby to our avocados !

I keep a very warm souvenir of this stay and hope to come back even if it is 17 hours flight from home .

Rainforest fantasy house

I loved staying in the Rainforest fantasy house. It was up a private road with a locked gate leading to a beautiful fantasy house surrounded by rainforest. Beautiful views of the sky and the forest all around. I am a birder and saw many kinds of birds in the area. The large yard was mowed back so you could walk and look right into the rainforest. The large decks were lovely to sit on day or night. The kitchen was well equipped with everything one could possibly use. The choice of dining at the bar or sitting at the large family style table was nice. The bathrooms were both clean and well stocked with towels. The downstairs shower was especially nice. The Hawaii books available for trip planning were great. It is very close to the Lava State Park, trips into Pahoa were quick, and there is a place to go snorkeling not far away. I was able to go walking on lava near the ocean entry too. I truly enjoyed my stay there and would recommend visiting this rainforest fantasy house whenever you are visiting the Big Island.

Let's start from the beginning...I inquired about this property online and within 5 minutes my phone was ringing. The home owner was calling to explain the house and ask more about what we would be doing there, how long, their deals, etc. She kept describing this as a "luxury home" (and she was right!) Throughout the next couple of days I must have sent her 20 emails just asking questions and she always promptly and patiently responded :) The directions were great. We found it with no problem. They include a "things to do" list in their policy and I am SO SO glad for that. Some of the highlights from our trip were in there and we would have never known about these things if they didn't include it for us. Now for the house: complete bliss. You will literally not see a soul if you decide to do so. It is so secluded and relaxing. The kitchen was stocked with everything and I mean everything one could possibly need. My favorite part of the house was the master bathroom shower. Just incredible. I cannot rant and rave about it enough. I could go on and this house for days, but the bottom line is is that we were extremely happy about it. I will never forget this vacation and the customer service of the home owners was just wonderful. We had never rented a house on vacation, but I feel now that this is the only way to go. Thank you again so much for the vacation of a life time!

Car: necessary

Ours is a rural location close to major attractions. The town of Pahoa, 2 miles away, is a charming sleepy, historic 'Sugar Cane Railroad Village' that is still most like 'Old Hawaii,' not touristed as many such places are in the Islands. But nonetheless, Pahoa has arguably the greatest concentration of excellent small restaurants on the Big Island.

Our house is only 15 minutes from a large natural rock, warm thermal pool and several other such small pools for delicious swimming, next to the Pacific Ocean. Ocean swimming and surfing is located only 20 minutes away by car. Also, great coral reef snorkeling. Located only one hour from Volcanoes National Park and not far from the mostly continuous active eruption of lava (which can also be viewed by helicopter or boat tour.) Two hours from Mauna Kea (year round snow) and home to many of the world's greatest observatories where you find a Star Gazing Visitors' Center for nocturnal adventures, and for amazing sunsets.

Our home is gated, and is special also for what you will not see. You will probably see no one at all during your stay, unless you want to.

The sun rises on one side of the property and sets on the other, with Hawaiian birdsongs at dawn and dusk. We have beautiful, territorial views and inestimable peace for our visitors. You will need a rental car, but a four wheel drive vehicle is not necessary, and there are no parking problems anywhere here.
