Overview

Kapoho Estate Rental Photos and Description

Private, 2 Bedroom, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4+) but still perfect for 2

Our Big Island home, near Kapoho and close to Seaview, Black Sands Beac, tropical thermal pools on the ocean, in Old Hawaii, is a unique, custom-built, round, house located in a clearing at the top of a long approach hill, on ten acres of completely secluded rain forest. It is completely private and in a very relaxed setting. The house is solar powered and equipped with all modern comforts and appliances. It has a spacious 500 sq ft. bedroom with a single bed futon in the master and queen sized bed in a bedroom upstairs and double sleeper upstairs in the great room. Upstairs floor features huge kitchen, living room, with 3 sets of french doors that open onto a huge outdoor living room/ lanai/ dining room with extra sleeping mattress futon( very comfortable bed)space for visitors and friends. The open-plan design works for a family, or small group, or for just two people. There is lots of art in our home, which is used just for guests, friends or exchangers, and it is beautifully, comfortably and completely furnished for your use during your stay. Cleaning services are available for a reasonable fee from our year-round, nearby caretaker.

The house will be beautifully prepared for you, and all ready for your tropical stay. Cleanliness is a most important part of your guest experience. Our home is equipped with washer and dryer.

The kitchen is exceptionally well-equipped for dining and cooking, as we love to cook and when we vacation there ourselves and we always shop and cook locally, with fresh ingredients.

We provide directions to our guests for doing the same locally, including all the special, nearby 'farmers markets,' and also info. on favorite places to dine nearby. Our open-style home has no need for AC, just the beautiful Trade winds and sea breezes that blow up the hill, gently, and throughout the house, though we also have tropical ceiling fans. The keynote here is 'comfort first' even though all furnishings are artistic and appealing. Bring a book or two to enjoy in the hammock! This is pure relaxation, which we all need, and love!

About Sharon Dodge

I built this custom home over six years, with carefully selected Eco-friendly materials, and methods. It is 'off the grid' and has it's own fresh water supply and the electrical is all solar powered. It is an 'indoor/outdoor' open stye home perfect for the year round mild Hawaiin climate with three sets of french doors that open out from the main great room onto a large 800 squae foot Ipe' deck under an extended roof where you will lounge comfortably barbecue, read in the giant hammock or enjoy our outdoor living room, and outdoor dining table.

Sharon Dodge purchased this estate in 2012

Why Sharon Dodge chose Kapoho

The house is luxurious in look and feel, and is at the end of the road at the top of the hill on a gorgeous ten acre parcel and if you want, you will have no visitors( though our caretaker lives nearby if you need her.). It is clear and planted with fruits, spice nut and coffee trees and shrubs as well as flowers and is perfect seclusion in a setting of great natural beauty , with lots of room and is all your own, while you are there. You will not be disturbed by anyone. And except for visiting the local sites -warm thermal ponds, Mauna Kea Observatory, ocean swimming, gardens, waterfalls, and the volcano, you will not want to leave. This is the relaxed lush side of the Big Island and ours is the perfect place for lovers, friends or even individuals who want to truly get away from it all. A day and a night often feels like three, as time slows down for you there. Perfect counterpoint to the more touristed parts of this or any Hawaiin island stay.

What makes this estate unique

You will awaken to birdsong, a chorus at dawn and go to sleep to gentle sounds of the melodic tree frogs in the forst. The sun rises on one one side of our deck and sets on the other. Restful. Yet it is also a great starting point to explore nearby Kilauea and it's near continuous Lava flow since 1989. ( But do not worry, you are far from it's lava flow.)

Or.. you can crank up your music on the sound system as loud as you like. There is no one near enough to be bothered! Your private paradise for a relaxing stay. The master bedroom on the lower floor is roomy, over 500 square feet and the queen bed is so comfortable you will wish you could take it home with you. All bedding is luxury quality. A lot of people believe you sleep deeper and dream more, in a round house. We have found it to be true out there in our tropical 'piece o' paradise'.

WOW! That was incredible.

  • 5 of 5

We are 3 friends ---- a couple, and a third wheel ---- well, it didn't seem that way:)

My first suggestion -- is to look at the directions -- and know them well. Just remember --- yellow fire hydrant, big electrical station, just past the lava park and past the fork in the road (but really, 10 seconds past).

You pull in -- and drive straight into what seems like a forest. Thankfully we came during daylight. You get to the end of a little path, and then you look up -- and you see it! This little oasis.

We had the upstairs, and our friend stayed in the bottom portion. Only attached on the outside deck/stairs (which we spent 90% of our time when we were there and not sleeping. Keep in mind, if you sleep upstairs, you are probably the first ones up ---- you have a bath room and a kitchen --- fully stocked.

Ok -- why I loved this place. It was clean, I barely saw any bugs --- and I hate bugs. But yes, a few gecko's, moths, mosquitos. But not bad and they don't really bother you (maybe the mosquito's a bit) --- but there is bug spray and mosquito coils here ------

Oh -- I am going to buy an oil lamp ---- I fell in love with this turn of the century (seemed to be that to me) --- lamps. Every night we would just sit and listen the the frogs, geckos, and not sure what other amazing sounding animals. If you are lucky and get to see a clear night -- -just lock up and take a look at the skies.

I loved this place because it was really central to many things we did. Kapoho tide pools, Kalapena, Black sands and Green sands beach (if you can do the green sands beach DO IT! We chickened out --- you can 4x4 off road it -- but I wouldn't do it (stupid rental company policy) --- but I wanted to ... so we hiked in -- and kept hiking --- up and down -- with no beach in site. We knew there was a beach, because trucks kept taking loads of people by us -- and others were walking back. Here's a hint --- don't walk.

Oh and then the Volcano and the Mauna Kea observatory ---- another amazing thing.

Check out the beaches in Hilo if you can -- there are some pretty cool ones by the airport. Some really big, and partially sand tide pools over there.

There is a guest book - and I left our 7 day itinerary in it -- just look for the messy doctor handwriting:)

One last thing -- we met Jasmin(e) the person that maintains this place for Sharon -- she was incredibly nice, and was always there to answer questions and provide suggestions. Aloha and Mahalo!

Hideaway with excellence!

  • 5 of 5

Rarely will a trip ever be "perfect" or be the ideal of what you picture in the lead up, so don't be harsh to judge when things go wrong that you can't control or that don't live up to the image you had. So, now, we have Sharon's round-house near Pahoa on Big Island. We are seasoned travellers, but this was our first time to Hawaii, staying here, followed up by a stay at North Shore, Oahu where I'm writing this from several days later. Our trip from Melbourne, Australia, was 10.5 hours to Honolulu with our 18 month old boy (children should never be an excuse not to go away, he's been on more trips already than I'd been to at age 30!) it was as pleasant as it could be. From Honololu the short plane trip with Hawaiian Airlines to Hilo (pronounced Heelo) was quick and easy. We were surprised by how busy and congested the roads were on the 45 minute trip to the round-house and the images were quite different to the really lush views we were expecting, the place was more rugged than lush, thinking about it now, well it was created by a still live volcano! The turn off to Sharon's place was more fulfilling of the views we had in mind and then on turning into the driveway we were so happy to find that we literally were in a hidden piece of paradise. The house was kept beautifully thanks to caretaker Jasmine that lives nearby and we had all of the comforts and luxury we had hoped for. Being a "green" house was no issue, never did we run out of power or even use the generator. We were actually very lucky after the powerful and relentless winds on the second day that blew down half the trees on the property and in surrounding areas and with it the power lines. So whilst the neighbours went without, we were the lucky ones. During this quite stressful period we arrived home from an adventure to find a large tree had fallen over the long driveway. With my wife and child still in the car in still powerful winds and with nowhere seeming safe, Sharon's neighbours from nearby properties stepped up and without hesitation had the tree chopped up and us back to the safety of her house in minutes. They did this despite one of the neighbours having had a tree fall on their own roof, but they still assisted us first! To think I was concerned about our safety in the remoteness of this property on our first night!

The grounds are immaculate here, our boy loved playing on the lush grass and everything you need including shops and thermal spring is only minutes away! Thank you!!!

Owner's Response: You were wonderful guests as well! Australians seem to understand outdoor adventure travel areas, but travelling with a wee one makes us all more careful ( but yes, not so much as to to stay home!) As you saw, we are super child and guest safety conscious Thanks for the great review! The remaining fallen trees by the way, were all quickly cut, cleaned up, and cleared out, and the "free", bulldozer-free, tree clearing in that big windstorm has further opened an even bigger view of the Mountain, Mauna Kea with it;s observatories clearly visible from the upper deck and grounds. Since our sturdy hurricane and quake proof designed house is just right for the Big Island, and because we previously cleared and removed all the big trees within 500 yards of house which sits at the top of a hill, and planted fruit and flowering trees on grassy land all around it, you had a huge safety zone there. And I love my wonderful neighbors, that no one ever sees unless they are needed. Still lush, with lots of the trees around us, and very very private.

Shangri-la!

  • 5 of 5

Wow! As I looked up the hill I was struck by how large the house looked. It is much bigger than the pictures. If you are looking for more adventure in your Hawaiian stay pick this place. It was so much fun! The kitchen/living area was huge. I used the large table for a project I was working on. Perfect for family dinners. But it is also tempting to sit out on the lanai while eating. I would have coffee there in the morning looking out at nature. I especially appreciated how private and quiet it was. I would watch the sun set some evenings; hear the crackle of a tree falling in the forest. The decor in the house is darling. My favorite part was taking a shower in the rock shower looking out at nature. I got a kick knowing the owners wouldn't be charged for the electricity I used. By the way, they were great quickly answering any questions I had. The house is clean and neat. The kitchen has everything you need. Getting onto the road to go somewhere was easy because there is hardly any traffic. If you are visiting the east side of the island this is a fun place to stay on your vacation!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much Mary. You were a great guest. Yes, I agree it is so much bigger than shows in the photos:really roomy even for groups, but since I often enjoy it myself in solitude, I am so glad you also found it a wonderful retreat for us "solo" travelers.

Unique rainforest retreat

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I spent 4 relaxing days at the end of January in this wonderfully interesting and amazingly well equipped rainforest retreat (but it only rained at night). Going to bed to the sound of the frogs (they quit before midnight) and waking up to birdsong made for very restful sleeps. Breakfast on the deck was a fabulous way to start the day. Everything worked as advertised, although we didn't try the TV or music systems. The photos are accurate, but there is less shrubbery now. The layout is not going to be anything like what you are used to: the only way to go from the downstairs master bedroom to the kitchen and dining area upstairs is via outside stairs. However it is perfectly suitable for the climate and location (nobody else in sight) The property was generally clean and well maintained. We encountered no insects, day or night.

The house is isolated but Sharon's directions were perfect, even in the dark.

This is a relaxed corner of the Big Island. Even on the weekend we had no trouble finding parking to snorkel in the tide pools at Kapoho and soak at Ahalanui. It's a bit over an hour up to the Volcano National Park and about half an hour into Hilo, although traffic was often very slow between Pahoa and Kea'au. Pahoa Town is funky and laid-back. We didn't spend enough time to get into the flow but we did eat very well in Paolo's.

I would certainly be glad to stay here again and recommend it to friends.

Tropical Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

I am writing this review sitting on the balcony of the Tropical Round House, listening to the gentle sounds of the surrounding rainforest, wondering how on earth I'm going to summon up the energy to return to "normal life" at the end of this trip!

If you are looking for a wonderful, secluded property set in a beautiful location then the Round House is for you. The property looks exactly like the photos - is spotlessly clean and tidy, and very well equiped and maintained. Loly and Sharon have been fabulously helpful in answering our questions and organising little extras such as the breakfast pack, and their pack of local information is very accurate and up to date.

In our opinion, this location is perfect as it is on the "pretty" side of the Island, with easy access to many attractions (including the fabulous lava flows in to the sea).

We would wholeheartedly recommend this property to other, independent travellers and look forward to returning one day.

Owner's Response: We love to hear this. It is real pleasure to share the house and the solitude and beauty it offers busy modern people with so many wonderful guests. Thank you for visiting! We will welcome referrals your friends and family, ( word of mouth brings us many new guests) and hopefully you all again sometime! Aloha, Sharon

Ours is a remote rural location close to many major attractions. We have easy access to local farmers markets where you can purchase island grown fruits and vegetables as well as many deliciously prepared foods, with island tastes and familiar favorites also.

Our house is only 15 minutes from a large natural rock, warm thermal pool and several other such small pools for delicious swimming, next to the Pacific Ocean. Ocean swimming and surfing is located only 20 minutes away by car. Also, great coral reef snorkeling. Located only one hour from Volcanoes National Park and not far from the mostly continuous active eruption of lava (which can also be viewed by helicopter or boat tour.) Two hours from Mauna Kea (year round snow) and home to many of the world's greatest observatories where you find a Star Gazing Visitors' Center for nocturnal adventures, and for amazing sunsets.

Our home is gated, and is special also for what you will not see. You will probably see no one at all during your stay, unless you want to.

The sun rises on one side of the property and sets on the other, with Hawaiian birdsongs at dawn and dusk. We have beautiful, territorial views and inestimable peace for our visitors. You will need a rental car, but a four wheel drive vehicle is not necessary, and there are no parking problems anywhere here.
