Located on the Eastern side of the mountains we are located at just the right elevation to typically be about 10 degrees cooler than the lowlands. We will occasionally get a moderate snowfall but often see much more snow on the tops of the mountains.

Don't miss a visit to West Jefferson which features all the quaint country charm of a mountain village with all the conveniences of a larger city. While in town be sure to visit North Carolina's only cheese factory. You can watch cheese products being made and then buy some to take home. Also, be sure to visit the shops and art galleries throughout West Jefferson for a true mountain experience. Mount Jefferson State Park gives some beautiful views of the town and surrounding mountains.
Easy, scenic drives will take you to Blowing Rock, Boone and Ga-lax, VA.
You don't want to miss Glendale Springs and the Church of the Frescoes (one of two in Ashe County). Ben Long’s “Last Supper” fresco, a life-sized depiction is permanently enshrined in The Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
Shatley Springs is a popular nearby destination famous for its natural spring water. It features an Inn as well as a restaurant serving country style cuisine.
I designed this unique round house which has no interior weight-bearing walls. Yes, the rooms have walls, but we enjoy the open spaciousness and the many windows and glass doors which give us the feeling of being in the out-of-doors even when we are snug inside beside the fire on a wintry day. In the warmer season we enjoy relaxing in the large wooden swing, serving snacks on the wood coffee table in front of the swing.
We especially enjoy all the cultural offerings in the area. West Jefferson is chock-a-block full of galleries where we can see the artists at work, and even partake of lessons as well. Every July 4th West Jefferson celebrates 'Christmas in July' which is a remarkable craft fair and music festival all in one. Every July Appalachia State in Boone has its month-long cultural music and arts festival. King St has become a shoppers delight filled with unique shops and craft stores. We regularly check the Mountain Times weekly paper to plan our adventures.
November and December are the peak times to select our Christmas tree. Sometimes we even have a snowfall while we're strolling through the mountain-top fields.
Owner/Property Manager purchased this house in 1993
Our house has the best of both worlds. Set more than 500 feet back from the road it is totally private and cannot be seen from the road. Yet, being on a main road, we are assured of not being snow-bound. Rt. 16 is always one of the first roads to be kept clear.
One of the special design features is that the lower level has a air hockey table and bedroom and bath, making it a very private place for a guest. When our children come to stay with us, they can have a private place for themselves when they need it.
I just wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed staying at your mountain home this weekend. That house was so unique- my husband, who is a general contractor, was fascinated at the design. And the view from the back deck was incredible. We spent countless hours sitting on your porch swing enjoying the view of the mountain colors. It was a very relaxing, fun weekend site-seeing on the parkway and in surrounding areas. And certainly one of the cutest homes to stay in for our 25th wedding anniversary. Thanks again for the use of your home. God bless.
We loved this cabin, nicknamed "Top Notch". The space was clean and comfortable. We loved the unique round shape, the spiral staircase and the spacious bedrooms. We were a large group and there was plenty of space for all in the four bedroom, 2.5 bath, cabin. The livingroom offered a cozy central space for the family to gather around the warm fireplace -- for which there was plenty of pre-chopped wood. Away from the town lights, the night sky was amazing with all the stars. The wrap-around, two-level deck afforded us gorgeous views of the mountains and trees surrounding the the cabin. There was even a porch swing. We all had a blast at the air hockey table, and there were several other board games and even legos for the children to play with. Besides having a washer and dryer, the owners stocked the cabin with plenty of bedding, blankets, kitchen items (pots, pans, dishes, utencils, etc.) and other comforts of home. We would definitely stay again -- maybe in the summer next time, to do some grilling and enjoy the warm-weather activities of the surrounding towns.
All eight of us had a nice spot to sleep and the location was perfect for our activities. Open kitchen was ideal for old friends chatting while cooking dinner. Away from city lights the stars were incredible and played with various camera settings to grab a few interesting pictures. View in the morning across the valley to the Blue Ridge Parkway was stunning while we would sip our bitter brew. We'll be back next year...
Couldn't have asked for a better weekend. Started off on Friday grilling and having a few drinks on the porch. Saturday morning started in the fully equipped kitchen, making omelettes and bacon, and then after a quick drive up the road we set out on the Blue Ridge and found a fantastic hiking spot. There are plenty within range of this cabin. After that it was back for more good home cooked food, drinks and several air hockey sessions. Sunday was mostly clean up, but the view after a cloudy Saturday was incredible. We even got to witness a flock of small black birds migrate through the woods as we were packing up our cars.
Any troubles we had before or during our stay were quickly alleviated by the owner. Great cabin, great owner, great location. I would recommend it to anyone. (unless they plan on staying on a weekend I plan to come up)
My sister and I took our kids ( 3 ) ages 12,12 and 15. We had a blast. Place was beautiful. Plenty of stuff to do in the NC Mountains. We loved this house and hope to stay there again. Thank you so much for making your home available and so welcoming.
Perfect house for a weekend get away with family. We were able to have a wonderful family visit plus be close to Laural Springs for a wine competition at Thistle Meadow winery on Sunday. Hopefully the house will be available next year so we can come back for the weekend.
