The Elk River is a Wilderness area and Fall and Spring are noted for fabulous fishing on the pristine Elk River. A serine spot as well, since only drift boats are allowed! The Fish Hatchery is a short walk from our riverhouse where boats can be launched and fish can be viewed.
Salmon spawning is happening there late Fall and is a great chance to view large fish as they return to the hatchery. Early June the hatchery hosts free fishing for children up to the age of 10. Three miles up from our riverhouse, the Elk River is spectacular after the rains have replentished it. It is aqua-marine in color~ an incredible sight up the canyon! And there are numerous waterfalls as well!
Cape Blanco Lighthouse is just 15 minutes away and offers an awesome view of the Pacific ocean plus interesting facts about the history of the lighthouse.
Port Orford marina offers a possible glimps at migrating whales in Spring and sealions throughout the year too! And always a view of the picturesque Oregon coastline!
The Animal Park, where one can actually touch wild animals! is just a 20 minute drive north.
Golf at Bandon Crossings is just beyond the Animal Park and Banon Dunes is a 40 minute drive along tree lined 101.
Shore Acres Botanical Gardens are located 1 1/2 hours to the north out of Charlston harbor. Thousands of lights during the Christmas season create a fantasy land as they glow in the night. The shoreline there is very interesting as well as the history of the Simpson family who originally owned the gardens.
South 30 minutes, at Rogue River, there are exhillarating jet boat rides up that beautiful river. Continuing south along a magnificent coastline you will arrive to the Giant Redwood Forest. This drive takes about 3 hours, but if you have the time to venture out, it is an awesome sight.
