Prazeres famous walks: famous walks in the Prazeres area include the '25 fountains' (starting point Rabacal) 'the Levada Nova' and 'the Caminho Real do Paul do Mar' PR19. The latter walk starts in Prazeres at a height of 535 metres and goes down to Paul do Mar Harbour. It is about 2 kilometres long and takes up to 80 minutes to walk. During the walk there are fantastic views of the fishing villages of Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar, waterfalls and flora. This trail is one of the historic “municipal paths” on Madeira. These paths were the only means of access to villages before roads were built. Also, it was cheaper to use the path for transporting goods than bringing them by sea which was more expensive and dangerous when the sea was rough.

Calheta's art centre on the cliffs!: The ‘Casa das Mudas’ international Arts Centre is a ‘landmark’ in Madeira. The Centre with spectacular views sits on the top of a cliff that abruptly stops when it meets the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the centre including a theatre and permanent and temporary contemporary art exhibitions is hidden within the cliff. The black basalt stone of the centre’s outside reflects Madeira’s skylight and helps it integrate with the natural landscape.

Calheta attractions nearby: white sand beaches next to Calheta marina. Opposite the marina is a supermarket. Dolphin-watching, whale-watching and big-game fishing boats operate from the marina. Other attractions include the international award-winning art centre ‘Casa das Mudas’ and ‘Engenho da Calheta’ an ‘aguardente’factory up the hill from the marina and white sand beaches
