Nestled above a private cove beach ( locally called a “keyhole”) on the South shore of the tropical island of Roatan, L’Alizé enjoys both a constant sea breeze and a dramatic view of the Caribbean every day of the year. L’Alizé derives its name from the French word for African trade winds, (alizés) which flow East to West during the warmest months of the year. These dramatic winds account for a such a surprising cooling effect on the hottest days, that it quickly becomes clear why Roatan’s earliest towns settled on the South side of the island where these winds rarely fail to cool and refresh while they keep the bugs in check.
L’Alize was built by one of Roatan’s premier builders in 2008-2009. The building techniques and materials reflect attention to detail and quality construction. Keen usage of space, and maximization of views and sea breezes, remind one that this exquisite home was built to be enjoyed year round by the builder himself.
In 2011 a major renovation added the pool, deck, cottage, two bedrooms and two baths.
In 2014 L'Alize was awarded the distinction of a luxury destination for Homeaway’s Luxury Rentals site, by Andrew Harper, a leading luxury travel company TM, . Only two of Roatan's vacation rental properties have qualified for this prestigious rating (see luxury.homeaway.com).

Owners' kids slack line across the path to the keyhole beach.
Owners live and work in Central America. L'Alizé's natural beauty and privacy provide a place to catch up on unfinished business. This is an ideal setting for uninterrupted reading, painting or writing. With their children they enjoy exploring caves, the rope swing and snorkeling.

A true getaway. Nestled in dramatic untamed beauty on pristine turquoise shores with abundant wildlife, makes this home a refuge as well as a great place to celebrate family gatherings. Restaurants, and grocery stores are only minutes away.
L'Alizé has all the modern conveniences of home with the feel of an outpost on an uninhabited island. The view from the second floor great room took our breath away the first time and each time we visit. We never get used to the beauty.
The home is well maintained and regularly updated with the amenities we want to find.
Beautiful home in a secluded tropical paradise!

L'Alize is a lovely place with all the amenities of home. The kitchen on the second floor has plenty of counter space and everything you need to cook your favorite meals. The BBQ on the deck is perfect for grilling up some fish! It seems that there is a great view of the ocean from every point. Whether enjoying a leisurely brunch on the deck, dining at the large table while gazing through the double doors at the ocean, or sitting on the comfy couch to watch a movie or play games, the view is always right in front of you. The beach is just a short stroll away and is very private. The keyhole (ocean inlet) is really lovely to cool off in, or as an entrance to great snorkeling to the right and the left. No cruise ship tourists have been standing on the coral here! There are caves to explore, iguana to watch scurrying over the rocks and other beaches nearby to visit as well. Some people love to swim and snorkel and explore, while others enjoy laying out and working on their tan. I like to do both and this is the perfect place! The benefits of privacy come with the small cost of a very steep hill to get to the main road. A rental car would be very helpful, but it is possible to walk up the hill and flag down a taxi for the short drive to West Bay or West End. We also got the phone number of a taxi driver who dropped us off and just called him to come get us when we wanted to go into town. Gumbalimba park is very close with zip lines and plenty of wildlife (including birds that will perch on your head and monkeys that crawl across your shoulders!) The dolphin show at Anthony's Key resort is always fun as is the little museum there with some information about the islands. If you tire of the peace and quiet, you can head into West End for some excellent dining and live music at several venues on the weekends. L'Alize is an all around great place to vacation. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a little piece of paradise!
Owner response: Thank you for your lovely review. We hope you will come back soon to enjoy this “little piece of paradise” .

Our dive week on the island of Roatan began when we were met by Eddie, jack of all trades, sent to pick the eight of us up from the airport. Three minutes out of the airport and we began to see the value in having a local doing the driving. Eddie got us safely to Lalize and the view was captivating from the start. At the home we were met by Trish who gave us a thorough walk thru of the beautiful three level home. Clean, comfortable, and well appointed with tile and hardwood through out. Enormous decks surround the house on all three levels and the views of both ocean and forest spectacular. Snorkel gear, kayaks, and even a pair of local pay as you go cell phones with minutes already applied were made available to us. The owners have gone to great lengths to anticipate and provide for the needs of the guests and their efforts were greatly appreciated . Soon after our arrival we were off to our dive shop of choice , Reef Gliders, to check in and deposit our gear for a week of diving. On our return home we were greeted by the wonderful aroma of Olga's Island Chicken Curry! It was wonderful as was each meal she prepared for us through the week. With very little input we left the dining selections to Olga and without fail she delivered tasty and more than ample sized meals. Hiring Olga was one of our best decisions on this stay. As a suggestion, making simple suggestions to Olga about your preferences for things such as salad dressing choices, seafood or not, and requests for a protein such as eggs and bacon to accompany her wonderful breakfast beignets allow her to zero in on what you will enjoy most. Her cooking and light house work added so much to the relaxation of this trip I can not recommend taking advantage of this perk enough. I honestly believe that we saved twice what we spent and enjoyed our stay so much more because of Olga and her beautiful family who all pitched in. In the end it's like this, the property is beautiful and housed all eight of us in comfort and that should be enough, but there's more. What made this a truly incredible stay was the attention to detail, the availability of things such as the van, the cell phones and local information and contacts. Most of all, the staff , Tish, Olga and Eddie, and their wonderful family. Do not overlook this gem. We will return again.
A group of friends & I recently stayed at this beautiful property & could not have asked for anything more. Everyone on the staff is courteous & prompt, the house looks exactly as it does in the photos, and the owner's response time is amazing. Everything that we needed was immediately taken care of. Do yourself a favor and try Olga's cooking at least once- we had her prepare 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners, and both were very delicious!
All the rooms are clean and spacious, the towels & linens were very soft, and the views from the balconies are gorgeous. There are a lot of steps, so prepare to get a workout- but we actually enjoyed that! It kept us in shape on our lazy vacation lol. The house came with 2 cell phones, which came in handy for calling different places around the island.
We especially enjoyed snorkeling around the shipwreck in our private keyhole beach and Gumbalimba Park's zip-lining entrance is literally across the main street. West Bay really is 5 mins away & is a beautiful beach. Definitely eat at the Vintage Pearl if you can, the food is really amazing. Also, Little French Key is not to be missed.
Overall, we all had an amazing time. You definitely will not be disappointed with this property. Great location, great house, great staff- what more could you ask for?!?
We had two families (4 adults and 5 kids) stay at L'Alize for 10 days and it was a great all-around experience. There was plenty of room, the views of the ocean were better than the pictures, and the trade winds kept things cooler day and night. It was in the upper 80's the entire time we were there and we did not turn on the air conditioning once.
Location is also great. Being on the south side of the island, you get more wind and a little more surf, but the privacy is great. Feels like you have the whole place to yourself. Bonus is that you are a 2-minute car ride to West Bay and less than 10-minutes to West End so you have full access to all the shopping, beaches and restaurants you could want. South Shore ziplining is also less than a 2-minute drive.
Cannot say enough about Olga's cooking. Truly amazing! We used her for breakfast every morning, a couple lunches and several dinners. It was very challenging to decide between having her cook a great dinner or to go out to one of the many great restaurants. It was the biggest problem of the entire vacation!
Great snorkeling in West Bay, awesome dives with Island Divers in West End and the white sand beaches were top notch. Roatan is definitely on our short-list to return to in the future.
1st time to Roatan. The pics you see on the VRBO site are spot on! Spacious, nestled into the side of a hill surrounded by trees, not very far from the keyhole beach. Very large decks and walkways but no guardrails so this is NOT a house for young children or toddlers.
We appreciated the pickup at the airport and that we were able to stop at the grocery store on the way to the house to load up on food and the all-important beer and cocktail makings! We opted to have Olga cook for us during the week as we just didn't want to hassle with it at all. We discussed menu options with Olga on the first day. Overall, we were not as impressed with the cooking as others who have used her services. Too much white rice and beans and some meat that was quite grisly (with that said, we did request her to switch to brown rice and mixed greens for the salad, which she accommodated). Olga did the shopping for the meals and we were surprised that about 85% of the purchases were from the grocery store versus local sources. Since she did the shopping, we had to pay for her transportation for these trips so we probably spent more money on groceries than if we just bought the items and had her cook the meals.
The kayaks that are available are great and it was so much fun to get in the water in the keyhole and go out. Also, we found the snorkeling right off the keyhole was better than the catamaran day trip that we took! Also, when you go out the keyhole and go west, you will find the rope swing on the shoreline the next keyhole down. It was quite fun!
Electricity is $.50 per kilowatt hour! We had 7 people and used the AC sparingly and it cost $193.
As noted, I gave L'Alize five stars, which it is overall although I do want to mention a few annoyances that, while they didn't create major issues, were still annoyances that we felt should not have been present given the "Award Winning, Luxury Home" status:
Safe: We were told the safes were working and when we arrived they were not and never were during our stay.
Van:very old, two bald tires, had a blowout one day, rough running. Very unsafe.
Paper towels, trash bags, TP: while we knew only one roll of paper towels was included, we found out later that we needed to supply our our trash bags and TP (really?, in a luxury rental?)
Phones: nice to have 2 cell phones provided but we had difficulty getting through to Tish. Test them with Tish present.
Overall, a really, really nice property and we would stay here again. A great time!
This was our third family vacation and it was amazing. The house is nestled in a beautiful tropical setting with stunning views of the Honduran coast and the ocean. It was beautifully decorated and had everything we needed for our week long stay. The staff was so helpful and if we needed anything at all, they took care of us in short order. Two of our kids are certified divers and did 5 different dives including the shark dive and a night dive. The snorkeling was also excellent with lots to see. There is a wreck just outside the keyhole where lots of fish congregate. We went to Banana Beach three times but you should avoid it on Wednesdays and Thursdays as the cruise ships come in and it is very crowded. If you wait until later in the afternoon those folks clear out and it is much more peaceful. We enjoyed the pool or used the keyhole on those days. We found some little Mom and Pop places to eat and had some amazing local food. Ask Tish for recommendations if this is what you enjoy. We also had Olga fix three meals during our stay which was such a treat after a day at the beach. Four of us also did the Dolphin swim at Anthony Key Resort. This was incredible and well worth the money. It was a life-long dream of mine to swim with dolphins and I wasn't disappointed. We rented a car and most of the things we wanted to do were just a short drive away. There are lots of taxis around so that might be an option for some. There were three levels to the house with lots of stairs and open balconies. We did have our 2 year old grand daughter with us and we had to keep a sharp eye on her so this probably isn't the best property for little ones. Still, we all did fine.
I just got back from spending a week at L'alize in Roatan and had an amazing time! We were a group of friends in our 30's that live throughout the US and met in Roatan for our annual vacation together. The house was well kept and as advertised in the photos. We elected to have Olga cook her famous meals, and that was one of the best decisions we made for this trip. Coming home to a nice warm meal was great after a day of scuba diving and beach going.
The keyhole beach was not very swim friendly due to the waves this time of year but definitely great to hang out and lounge around. The house is about 5-10 min car ride to West Bay and about 20 minutes from West End making the location very desirable.
All in all a great vacation, I hope to return soon with my family as the home would be great for a family getaway. Special thanks to the property manager Tish; Olga & Eddie who look after the property.
