We’re often told that our garden is one of the sunniest spots in Inverness. With an expansive lawn and fruit trees, it makes a great place to gather for al fresco dining after a day at the beach or hiking, or for morning coffee, afternoon tea/cocktails/oysters. The living quarters are ideal for a romantic getaway for 2, but also fun for a family of 4-6 people. The suite has a main room with an open kitchen, dining, living room plan. The kitchen is efficient with modern day amenities, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster, etc. The old English Pub dining table accommodates 6 people. The living room has a big fireplace and loads of cozy spots to get comfortable, curl up with a book. The main bedroom has a double bed and built-in work desk. The second bedroom has 2 sets of bunks to sleep 4 people. There is a DVD machine in this room as well. The house is full of good books and board games and WIFI (occasionally this blanks due to it being the country side, but can be accessed at the local café).
Our house is walking distance to Shell Beach, to most exclusive and unmapped beach in the area. Nearby, there are also hundreds of miles of trails to explore in the Tomales State Park. Also, within a few minutes drive, there are several good places to eat out.
The house, built in the 1950s by a New York architect has separate upstairs and downstairs living spaces. The upstairs houses permanent tenants. Due to excellent design, the spaces feel very private from each other, with separate entrances and gardens. Should you decide to stay at Canterbury Orchard, we can give you great insider tips on our favorite local adventures.
Thank you for visiting our listing. My husband and I bought our home after years of enjoying horseback riding, hiking, picnicing and sailing in the area. We have created many fond holiday memories raising our children here and hope to share it with others.
Walk to Beach. Sunny lawn. Tranquil Orchard setting. Easy to get to San Francisco. Close to small town shops and restaurants in Point Reyes Station. The gateway to the miles of trails and beaches in the National Seashore.
Quiet and peaceful, yet centrally located for good eats and adventures on foot or by horse, car or boat.
The house location is great. It is close to both Seashore, the beaches and Point Reyes. The trails are close to home, if you like to walk to the beaches. The garden is great especially for kids. Our kids loved it, especially picking fresh apples from the trees. My older one got so excited to see two bunk beds. Our host recommendations for food were great. We had a fantastic breakfast. They are very friendly people. They even let us stay one more hour for our younger one to take a nap. We really like our stay in Inverness.
My daughter and I spent the weekend at this wonderful spot north of San Francisco. Being from the Northeast, it gave us a perfect feel for how beautiful and adventuresome this area is, and how those who live in northern California enjoy and take such pride in it. The house is nestled within an adorable neighborhood harkening back to the 1960s, and inside it offers a clean, spacious and cozy place to retire after a day outside. Then you add to that a beautiful garden outside in which to relax and entertain and you have created a perfect place to stay. Enjoy.
Great location! This cozy place is a ten minute walk to Shell Beach and a short drive to numerous trailheads and the quaint town of Point Reyes Station. The kitchen is small but functional, and the fireplace is wonderful. It is ideal for a couple or a family with small children.
My wife and I stayed here and enjoyed a sunny summer afternoon in the garden. It was quiet and afforded the opportunity to unwind from work. Just an hour from San Francisco and yet a world away. You could walk to the beach, get dinner at a local restaurant or go for a hike. Yet, we just enjoyed the time spent at the house and a wonderful meal made in the kitchen. The fireplace added to the cozy feel and really warmed up the evening. We will go back again!
What a wonderful time we had here. Explored the seashore all day then came home to make a great dinner and play board games. Also, the house is handy quick drive to the big Pacific side beaches and endless pasture hikes too. Beds are super comfy, house has everything you need for memorable family weekend.
This is the perfect spot for a family or whoever is looking for a relaxing vacation in one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Minutes from the beach, the lighthouse, town, hiking, boating, fishing, and fresh oysters. You can sit in the large yard and enjoy the fruit trees or sit by the cozy fire and relax. The space is small but it is very well laid out and has everything you need to enjoy a great vacation on Tamales bay. We love it here and will return often!
There are hundreds of miles of trails in the area to explore. From the house, you can walk to Shell Beach and the Tomales State Park Trail System by following Camino Del Mar to the end and going down the trail. It’s less than a mile total. It’s a great place to swim, especially for childrn in the bay and in warm water with no ocean swells. At low tide you can walk back along the shore to Chicken Ranch Beach, and back to the house along the road. A longer loop would be to climb up the road just SE of the house, Via Del Vista, to its end. Then continue straight up a dirt driveway that will become a trail. When you come to a “T” in the trail, turn right (Johnstone Trail) and it goes down to Shell Beach. That’s about 2 hours in total.
A good source of information for going further afield is the Bear Valley Visitor Center at Pt. Reyes National Seashore. This will give you information to the Point Reyes Lighthouse closeby and the ocean beaches.
Five Brooks Stables provides guided horse rides in the Point Reyes National Seashore to the beach. Blue Water Kayaking provides rental boats on Tomales Bay.
There are several good places to eat out. In Inverness, Salt Water is good with wine on tap. Vladimir’s is good for a beer. In Point Reyes Station, the Pine Cone Café is yummy for breakfast and lunch…good shakes! Pizza Reyes is reasonable and very good, gourmet pizzas. Stellina’s is more upscale and very good. The Olema Inn in Olema is also a nice spot for an upscale dinner. If you want to buy your own oysters and bring them home, we recommend Tomales Bay Oyster Co. which is on Highway 1 North about 15 minutes out of Point Reyes Station on the left.
Enjoy in all four seasons!
