Our house is located on the north shore of Oahu, less than two miles west of Sunset Beach, the world famous surfing beach, and about one and a half miles west of Backyards (Velzyland), which is an equally well-known windsurfing site. A lesser known and uncrowded surfing area is offshore from our property. We are directly on the ocean, with year-round sunsets, and whales passing by during the winter months. The house sits on a flat, rocky reef, with sandy beaches a very short walking distance to the left and to the right. An offshore reef protects us from the pounding waves, and provides safe swimming and snorkeling. Honolulu is a one-hour drive away, but we are also directly on the bus line.
The vacation unit is in a separate wing of the main house and has its own private entrance. It shares a large deck and a large patio, both overlooking the water, with tables, lounge chairs, and a small charcoal barbecue. It is an upstairs-downstairs arrangement, with a large, airy bedroom upstairs, and a small sitting room and bath (combined tub and shower) below. Both rooms have ocean views.
An inclined ladder-staircase leads to the bedroom (please see photo), which contains a king-size bed, a chest of drawers, and hang-up space.
The downstairs sitting room contains a couch and a TV (cable/44 channels). There is NO KITCHEN OR STOVE, but the downstairs room has a small refrigerator, a microwave, single burner hot plate, coffee maker, toaster, and small, fold-away TV tables. There are also dishes and utensils, adequate for light cooking, using the bathroom sink for cleanup. We also have a washing machine and dryer available for guest use. As with many other ocean front homes on the North Shore, we are located on the around-island highway, so there is some vehicle noise in the bedroom at certain times. It is not heard in the sitting room or on the deck. Because of the possible hazard with the inclined staircase and the steep deck stairs (see photos), we cannot accept small children.
We require a five night minimum stay.

Thank you for being such wonderful hosts. We especially appreciated the use of your guide book, which we would have been lost without. We had such a wonderful time! We will definitely recommend you to anyone looking for a place to stay on Oahu.
If I did anything right on planning this Vacation to Oahu it was picking the McMahon Property to stay at and we will do so again if ever the chance arise again to go to Hawaii! Richard and Ann were the most gracious Hosts to meet. They would ask what we did or had we seen this and gave us insiders information of life on the island. Yes it was mentioned that the Highway noise could be heard but when we were there the waves were louder than the highway noise and were very comforting and relaxing. And sitting up in bed every morning and the first thing to see is the Palm trees and the rolling of the waves can't be beat!! We Highly recommend that you stay here and play here at Kahuna Bay. Your close to all the best beaches, Shrimp Trucks, Market places, Polynesian Cultural Center, Laie Temple, Zipline, Where they made Pearl Harbor, Jurassic Park, windtalkers just to name a few!!
When we arrived Richard was right on time outside to give us a warm welcome. We had been camping for the last five days, so we were tired and desperately needing to do some laundry and get clean. Richard gave us all the information we needed for our stay but didn't take too long to do so, which we appreciated as we wanted to get Clean! We were able to access the washer and dryer right away, soap and dryer sheets provided which was really nice to have. Ann greeted us as well, again with the warmest welcome. I read that another individual previously mentioned the noise of traffic being an issue. We had no issues with this and felt that the sound of the waves was peaceful and calming both at night and in the morning. Also we were never too hot, and didn't even access the fans that were available for our use. If we ever go back to the north shore we would definitely want to stay here again!
Great location if you're looking to be near Sunset beach. It is right on the highway so there is some road noise didn't bother us at all. If the heat bothers you there is no AC so it's very warm they do have three fans one downstairs and two up however one little fan upstairs wobbles and vibrates a bit we didn't use that one.The heat killed me rarely slept more than two hours at a time. The view is spectacular you can damn near spit in to the water. The bed is hard and really funky it looked like two twin beds stuck together so it's wide but really short I'm 6'5" so my feet hung over by about a foot. Also watch your head upstairs pays to be short I have a nice new lump. The stairs are funky too very steep be careful coming down when dark. There were three cute little gecko's living in the bathroom they must have been vegetarians because they didn't seem to eat any of the bugs buzzing around. It's Hawaii warm and humid so bugs are expected. Only saw the owners when arriving and leaving we spent the days on the beach also spent a fair amount of time at Ted's Bakery good food at a great price. I would suggest the owners spend a little money and buy a decent bed that thing is horrible the futon downstairs smells like mold the tv is tiny the furniture downstairs is almost falling apart. But the house is amazing except for that area we rented. We made the best of it didn't spoil our vacation one bit.
I recently stayed for two full weeks at this location and I have to say, everything about it was perfect! The location was close to many attractions such as Turtle Bay, Polynesian Culture Center, Pipeline Beach and the historic town of Haliewa. There is surfing, snorkeling, and any other water sports you wish nearby or a short drive away, or even just a beautiful sunset from the deck. A little farther gets you to Dillingham Airfield for adventure seekers interested in glider flights or skydiving. Great hiking trails and immediate access to the shore highway if you just want to drive the North or East coasts.
Ann and Richard could not have been more gracious hosts and I greatly appreciate the opportunity to stay here. They were always happy to answer questions and even make suggestions on things to do in the area. Richard is still an avid hiker and has amazing recommendations. I wasn't always around, even away sometimes for over a day at a time, but Ann always found me when I was there to ask if I needed anything.
I will definitely stay here again. For those interested in more space, they have a larger unit attached to the home as well.
Just wanted to send a big THANK YOU!!! to Ann and Richard. I had a wonderful 10 day stay at this property. You can't ask for such a better property/location where the water is your backyard. Away from the hustle and bustle of the town and only a few miles to some of the greatest beach spots. My main goal was to come and have a relaxed time reconnecting with the island and this was perfect for that. Ann was very helpful with tips of local events and spots to visit. I got to meet Richard the day I was leaving. Such a warm couple who definitely spread the aloha! I caught the Pipeline competition and as expected road and beach traffic were expected, but this location is a few miles away from there and not as busy. I highly recommend this place to anyone whether you just want to get away and chill, or going to be sight seeing all day and need a place to rest your head. Thanks again Ann and Richard. I had a wonderful time and will see you again this year. Mahalo!!!
My husband and I spent a week here and we really loved it. We especially loved the peacefulness and beauty of the North Shore compared to the hassle and crowding around Honolulu, and always looked forward to coming "home" at the end of every adventuresome day. The hosts are wonderful and were helpful in every way. They even loaned us a great hiking book that made it possible for us to explore some of the amazing peaks and waterfalls of Oahu. The housing was pretty much as pictured in the photos. The only two things we were a little disappointed with were that the highway going past the house seemed to have traffic going all night long, which was a little disruptive to sleep, and also that the large bed in the upstairs loft seemed to be higher on one side than the other by at least an inch or so. Otherwise, everything was wonderful and we would definitely stay there again. And as soon as possible!
We are less than 2 miles from world-famous Sunset Beach, and from the Turtle Bay Resort's fine beaches and two golf courses. A new 1,100 acre state park provides many miles of forested trails for hikers and mountain bikers, less than 4 miles away. The nearby Polynesian Cultural Center and Waimea Valley Cultural Park are first class tourist attractions.
