Darlene and I are true locals having grown up in Ouray and Ridgway.
We spent our early married years in the Denver area and after 10 yrs. decided that we wanted to leave the fast paced urban lifestyle and return to a more tranquil mountain setting. Ridgway was the perfect choice.
We have been knocking around the southwest for 30 years now and have extensive knowledge of SW Colorado and also Utah, Arizona and New Mexico.
We are people oriented and enjoy sharing our knowledge of the hidden gems of the southwest with others.
As much as we love the natural beauty of the area we also feel lucky to live in a community with a very diverse mix of great people.
We wake up every day thankful for where we live.
Owner/Property Manager purchased this studio in 1992
We purchased this property in 1990 when we discovered it located in the old historic residential district of Ridgway. It had never been built upon and had old growth trees and shrubs throughout. We knew that it would be perfect for a private cottage style home to be situated on .
The grounds have nice areas for lounging, reading or cocktails. The neighborhood is very quiet and safe with little traffic.
We are located 2 blocks from the Historic Business District which includes Kates Resturant (voted #1 in Ridgway) 2 blocks from The Colorado Boy Brewpub, well known for it's great brews and Pizzas and is a spirited locals hangout. Also close by is the new Sherbino Theatre being renovated for film and live music.
We are located 45 minutes from Telluride and its world class ski area. Telluride is also known for its year round festivals. Bluegrass, Blues & Brews, Jazz and Film to name a few.
Ouray Colorado 'The Switzerland of America' is 15 minutes south and has fantastic hiking, biking, ice climbing and soaking in it's hot springs pool. The outdoor activities are endless in this area. Come and enjoy.
Our five day retreat at the Stone Cottage was exceptional from beginning to end.
The purpose of our stay was to take scenic motorcycle rides to the areas around Ridgway.
The owners Bob and Darlene are motorcycle enthusiasts and were very helpful with ride info as well as helping us unload and load our trailered bike. The cottage was even more
adorable than the photos and every detail of what would be needed was anticipated. It felt as though we were in a tree house. Sitting outside in the shade of the many trees was delightful. We will return again and again to this special place.
The cottage itself, was quiet and intimate. Even nicer than the photographs depicted. The bed and its linens were 5-star-quality and comfort! The kitchen though small, was well laid-out and more than adequately supplied for a couple preparing a morning meal, take-away-lunch or evening repast. Window light filters in and gives the flat a warm and welcoming glow.
And the breeze through the windows and French doors! sigh… Perfect!
The washroom was also a pleasure, the shower had wonderful water pressure, and is of a size that it is comfortable, and not cramped, stocked with oversized luxurious towels and full sized soap bars, to boot!
When I consider just how phenomenal the cottage is and then add in the Hosts, well, this is where words truly begin to fail me.
Bob & Darlene were not only accommodating hosts, they were kind, and helpful, both with a wealth of knowledge about Colorado and the surrounding areas that they were willing to share openly. They always seemed to find time to “fill-us-in” on places to eat—“The Colorado Boy, Kate’s Place, the Thai Restaurant— or places to drive or off road…
We have never before felt as welcomed as we did during our stay at the “Stone House Cottage.” We honestly felt that we have made good friends in Bob and Darlene, this was a stay we will not soon forget, and will always cherish, and hope to repeat for years into the future!
We enjoyed our stay so much that we stayed for our initial 6-nights and then left to camp for two while they entertained other guests, and then we returned between guests for two-more-nights! We are already in the process of locking down our dates for next year!
My one fear is that the “Stone House Cottage,” will become so popular, we will have difficulty arranging visit-dates in the future!
Thank-you Bob & Darlene for everything! We were truly overwhelmed.
We've been home now, for nearly 2-weeks, and each day I deliberate over just the right words to describe our stay with Bob & Darlene in their "Stone House Cottage.” I typically find it fairly simple to write a review of the places we’ve stayed. Quick and dirty, to the point. “Nice and clean, or Not-so-nice…” Less than 10-minutes later, poof, I'm done.
This time, it’s just not the case. There’s just so much that I’d like to say about our stay. Frankly it was just that fantastic! Really, I stumble over which words I should use:
be it—wonderful, sensational, outstanding, superb, super, excellent, first-rate, first-class, breathtaking—
They all fit, and yet somehow still fall short!
My husband and I plan getaway's nearly every summer, and every year we come back relaxed and refreshed— Usually quite happy and satisfied with the experience…
This year, as with last, we decided to return to Colorado, the mountains and their beauty call to both of us, and offer fantastic photographic opportunity that revitalizes our souls after working a year of 60-hour-weeks.
This year we planned to camp at least a third of our trip—which we did— and the balance of the time we thought we'd hop from hotel to hotel, as in previous years, while we took daily road trips and jeeped on some of the rugged back roads through the mountains taking photos.
About 3-weeks before we were to leave, while searching for accommodations, I stumbled across the "Stone House Cottage," and was able to reserve 6-consecutive-nights. The rate fit in with our planned budget, and the location in Ouray County was just where we hoped to be.
Upon arrival we were greeted by our Hosts, and were taken immediately by their warm and friendly reception… Then we were shown the cottage. Oh-my, the cottage, what a lovely surprise! Far beyond our expectations!
Nestled just a block-and-a-half outside of town, the location is perfect for anyone who enjoys a quick walk to any-place in the historic district, or along the river with its quaint shops and fantastic restaurants, or a short drive to the mountain roads with their spectacular views, or into Ouray or Telluride and beyond.

We have found the absolute perfect home-away-from-home! We will never stay at a motel again when going to the Ouray/Ridgway/Telluride area. The Stone House Cottage is just awesome! As are the hosts, Bob and Darlene. We arrived as renters and we left as friends. Thanks for a great experience all around.
A lovely quiet setting. Beautiful in every way. Pleasantly surprised to find this lovely upstairs loft as nice or nicer than the pictures. Perfect for a romantic get away. Will definitely try to stay here again.
Absolutly the best place I have stayed with VRBO!! Everything about it was perfect for my husband and me. The location was right in the middle of Ouray and Telluride. The owners are beautiful people in general. Helpful, kind, and full of information. I left there with friends for life!!Our dogs loved it too! I would recomend it to everyone and hope to return as well.
