Overview

Alki Beach Cottage Rental Photos and Description

beautiful views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains from every window

Walking on the beach, bicycling, kyaking, kite flying, and roller blading are possibly the best in the city, or maybe you'd like to have a wiener roast in one of the firepits on the beach or...people watch from one of many benches along the promenade.

Staying here you are walking distance to the Alki lighthouse & many restaurants, parks, movie theatre, busline and a free shuttle to the water taxi...which takes you to the Seattle waterfront, where you can walk to the world famous Pike Place Market, Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners or Century Link, home of the Seattle Seahawks,

among other things to do....the aquarium, space needle, restaurants, shopping, or go for a cruise on one of the Argosy boats, or one of many ferries to our islands....enjoy all the fun the downtown waterfront offers.

My beach cottage has a European feel....a little French...a little Italian...and sleeping is a little like the Dutch sleeping closets from history. I guarantee you'll have an outrageous time here!

Offered are a fully furnished kitchen, two baths, one bedroom + sleeping loft, both furnished with built in double beds...sleeps 4. Not suitable for small children or elderly or any one with difficulty getting around. Beautiful views of puget sound and the Olympic mountains from every window and the deck...while sleeping you'll hear the sound of waves outside your window or possibly sea lions, seagulls or...eagles... it's a very peaceful getaway or join the fun going on everywhere!

I recently finished a remodel and now have a wonderful 'sitting perch' with a view and steps to it, as well as the sleeping loft! The ladder is gone!

About connie mackenzie

I am a retired artist/designer...I fell in love with this property because of its' location. It had been vacant for a year so needed lots of work, which my two boys [both contractors/architects/artists] remodeled for me.

From the inside to the porch swing on the deck...it is positively delicious!!!

I am a swimmer, boater and all around beach & water lover....it's very peaceful and ...meditational but very exciting to be so close to the action! I'm also a traveler so I want to share this gem with other travelers.

I have a 1 year old puppy {see photo} so if you have allergies this might not be the place for you.

connie mackenzie purchased this cottage in 2004

Why connie mackenzie chose Alki Beach

this is where I wanted to live 8 months of the year.....the rest of the time is spent on my boat on Lake Union.

What makes this cottage unique

water...beach...and mountains! This place has it all!

Eclectic cottage

  • 4 of 5
My husband and I and adult daughter stayed here while attending a family wedding south of Seattle. Great location for getting into downtown Seattle for touring (Pike's Place Market, Seattle Center - Space Needle, Chihuly Exhibit, EMP Museum) as well as getting to passenger ferry to Friday Harbor. Easy walk to Alki Beach, and also to get to free shuttle to water taxi to downtown Seattle. Place is small, but so well designed that it seems like a larger home. Outside deck overlooking Elliot Bay is fabulous, very peaceful and relaxing. The small parking pad (have to drive up over a curb) proved somewhat challenging to get car parked far enough off the small, narrow street. We had a compact rental and it barely fit, so just something to be aware of if you are renting a car. Wi-Fi is slow, but as we were on vacation it really wasn't a problem for us. It's very evident the owner is highly creative, and a world traveler with a special fondness for Italy. If you're looking to stay in a place that is not "cookie cutter" and provides a great view of Elliot Bay, this property will meet your expectations.

Owner's Response: You're right the parking pad is small and best for small compacts....{see the 2nd photo} but I'm happy that I am one of the very few around here that can even offer parking. With some places you must park on Alki...which is a 1/2 block down the hill and walk up! And the wifi...I didn't know it was slow because I am techie challenged!
other than that my place is magical! and most really love it!

Perfect Cottage overlooking Puget Sound

  • 5 of 5
Perfect getaway for me. I needed a bit of peace in my life and found it in this beautiful eclectic home by the sea. Perfect for long walks by the Puget Sound but close enough to be in the heart of Seattle in 10 minutes. Everything about Connie's home made me comfortable. It was clean, comfortable and beautiful views everywhere. The deck was perfect for nice dinners with a view to die for. I'm planning on going back this winter for a few weeks and hope to stay in this wonderful little find. I would recommend this wonderful place for anyone who likes to smile and feel happy.

funky creative little cottage

  • 4 of 5
My husband and I stayed at the cottage over the 4th of July holiday. We found the owner to be easy to access before our trip. We flew into Seattle and then took a train to the ferry to a shuttle bus to get to the house. It would probably be much easier to drive but we wanted to explore without being weighed down by a car. The owner met us at the house as soon as we got there and showed us around. It is such a funky place. The previous reviewers wrote that it is cluttered which is definitely true but we felt like it was in a fun way. Anywhere we turned there was something new to look at (including the ceiling). I laughed out loud at the book of tub songs that hangs in the shower.
The only thing I'd note about it is that it is definitely clear that this is a place someone lives in when it isn't rented. The owners food/drinks are in part of the fridge and back room is an owners space. This is not at all uncommon though and wasn't a problem for us. The porch is a great place to sit out with a glass of wine in the swinging chair and enjoy the view.
The property is a half block off of the beach where there is a path that goes for a ways around. Was nice to do some runs in the morning and check out the scene. Definitely a different beach scene than we get at the east coast shore with huge tents and grills set up for the fourth of july.
There are restaurants nearby with a small corner store (a little more pricey) within a 10 minute walk. There is a regular grocery store about a 20-30 minute walk away uphill with more restaurants. We stocked up on supplies one day and carried them down. Rented stand up paddleboards a 2 minute walk away from the house. (the view is nice but the water is definitely not swimable at least when we were there!)
We took the ferry to and from the house (easily accessed by a shuttle bus) and wandered around Seattle.
It is a good property for low key, fit (the beds are hard to get onto if you have any disabilities) people who are looking for a quiet getaway not in the center of town with a nice view.

Owner's Response: "Funky is good!"
Only condiments in the fridge door are mine and I've welcomed guests to help themselves. Most people are coming on planes so can't take away food they've purchased. Anything like colas/beer or even sealed yogurts etc. I was leaving for incoming guests...telling them to help themselves. But now....... I'm taking everything away. And yes downstairs thru a locked french door, is my art studio...you may look in if you wish!
beds, please note.... in my cottage description.
My cottage is unusual.....beautiful.....magical...and the perfect place to build a wonderful memory. The photos show it well.

Property not cleaned/strong dog smell

  • 1 of 5
My husband and I have rented through this site and similar ones numerous times and have always had a wonderful experience! However, we were very surprised at the condition of this rental. Although this place is listed as “no pets” there is a dog that lives there with the owner and the place is not very clean. There is an exceptionally strong dog smell (strong for dog owners.) There is dog hair throughout the entire place and it hadn’t been swept, vacuumed, or dusted. I am asthmatic and allergic to dogs and only rent places that don’t have pets – and when I arrived and discovered this I tried very hard to tough it out since I wanted it to work. After the first night I realized that I couldn’t stay there and contacted the owner explaining the problem. We did not receive any response from her for the entire week that we were there! Since we had paid in advance by check, there was nothing that we could do.

The place is very close to the water and beach which we loved (since we stayed outside as much as we could.) The internet at the cottage barely works (we asked about this and also received no response.) The place has a lot of clutter – there are knick knacks everywhere that are covered in dust.

The main issue, however, was the lack of cleanliness and the strong dog smell. I cleaned and cleaned and was able to use a few spots in the cottage. The coffeemaker had old coffee and mildew in it and I tried cleaning it but eventually gave up and went out for coffee. The showers were filled with hair, old soap, and accumulated grime and had not been cleaned for some time. My husband and I travel a lot, we camp, and we stay at cheaper hotels and our clean standards are not high. But this was a challenging situation for both of us. I took some pictures that I am unfortunately unable to share here.

I finally heard from the owner the day before we were to check out. She wanted to make sure we would be out in time. Before I even mentioned it, she said that she doesn’t get wifi and didn’t get my communications during the week that we were there since she was on her boat. It was obvious that she had since she had brought it up – and I also wondered that she wasn’t available for contact from her renters (what about emergencies or just general questions?)

If we had paid much less for this place that would be one thing but at these rates, plus a cleaning fee, we were really surprised at the condition of the place and the lack of response from the owner.

Owner's Response: I HARDLY KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN!
"No pets" means no pets allowed!
I have a 1 year old cocker spaniel {see website}
"the place" not only had been swept..vacumned..dusted and all floors {wood & vinyl} mopped, but furniture vacumned as well!
My cell # is taped to the outside front cover of the idea book I leave for everyone filled w/ suggestions of places to see, restraunts/grocery stores and wifi password etc. I also tell everyone, please call with questions or any problems. anytime. She had my number, because she called it from the airport!
When I called her re: check-out SHE ASKED if I had gotten her email.....
at which I told her NO, because there is no wifi in our marina.... then she proceeded to list her complaints to me.
It has been my belief that not connecting or "bugging" people allows them to make the cottage their own while they are there. but calling ME, anytime, is what I want them to do.
I asked my neighbor if she would bring her laptop over to test my wifi.....it worked perfectly!
coffee maker...I take it apart and put the washable parts in the dishwasher.
knick-knacks! I have 4 grown children who have traveled the world bringing back treasures!
It's obvious nothing was going to be OK for these people.
They were unhappy when they arrived....their luggage didn't get here with them, I don't blame them for that.
but....WOW! wasn't there something to like about the cottage?

SO unique!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I spent only a very short time in this lovely little oasis but enjoyed it so much! The description of an artist cottage is right on. Cozy with eye candy and surprises in every nook and cranny. Creativity and child-like curiosity awakened! At the entry is a lush botanical feast but my favorite part was the deck. A garden in and of itself with a porch swing and a beautiful view of Puget Sound ringed by the Olympic Mountain range. Though most of the mountains hid behind clouds, we got a glimpse through the binoculars that were provided. Stunning! The beds are a high perch of comfort. We chose the nest in the loft where we could open the windows and port hole (another fun detail!) and fall asleep to the sound of the water. So lovely to wake up to that view! Connie's hospitality was warm and exceptionally accommodating (Thank you, Connie!). Everything we needed was there and ready for use. The cottage is convenient to restaurants, a bar or two and the beach, which has a forever-long walking and bike path (and a bike rental shop). It's just a very short walk down the hill (West Seattle is very hilly!) to the flat Alki Ave. below. Alki Cafe for breakfast... YUM!! Also a great view of Seattle and the water taxi a bit down the avenue- a long but do-able walk or there is a free shuttle to take you there. A short car ride away is California Ave., host to delicious boutiques, shops, restaurants and bars. We've rented vacation homes many times but this was, by far, our most unique experience! This home is perfect for those who enjoy an adventurous life a little left of center!

Beautiful and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5
Spent a few nights this summer while in Seattle on business. Made me feel like I was on holiday! The views from the deck overlooking the sound was very tranquil. The owner was very accommodating, and felt at home right away. Easy proximity from DT Seattle, and airport. Will definitely stay here again on next trip to the WC. Enjoy!!
