Take a century old carriage house, locate in the best living and shopping neighborhood in San Francisco, tear out the insides, and completely update.
Just off 24th street in a quiet alley-way, we found the perfect place to renovate and update. From dark-small rooms, we tore down walls, ripped up carpet (to find great hardwood) and redid just about everything.
The result is something that is absolutely central in one of the best neighborhoods in the city. Bright, modern and peaceful, it's the ideal home base in San Francisco. You can walk to some of our favorite food places (crepes at Savor), coffee (Martha Brothers) and groceries (Whole Foods) in under 5 minutes.
We're just 2 minutes from the J-Church street car line, that goes directly downtown. You can also walk 10 minutes and get to BART which goes directly to the airport or downtown as well.
Inside we've completely redone the kitchen. Modern appliances and everything our friend, a Cordon-Bleu trained chef has told us to get for her when she visits.
We have a big LCD 'smart' TV with Netflix preloaded for your viewing pleasure!
For the more technically oriented, there's 50mb broadband, WiFi, a printer/copier/fax and an Apple TV in the house as well so you will not be out of touch.
We've done our best to be eco-friendly here. The roof has hot-water solar (feel free to take long afternoon showers), most of the lights are LEDs (many of them using the new L-prize winner Philips LED bulbs) and the home is equipped with smart power and heat management systems.
We also have a single garage space that's shared between the two units, which you can reserve with prior notice and a small additional nightly fee. Please note that the garage will only fit compact cars and requires comfort with snug spaces and city driving.
After many years of renting other people's places on vacation, we decided we'd like to do this ourselves. We're professionals (lawyer and business consultant) living in Silicon Valley with two kids. We love San Francisco, and we don't always have time to go there for the weekends, so we can share this place with our friends and family. We hope you have a great time at our place. We're not San Francisco natives. That's probably why we've come to appreciate how fantastic this city is as a place to live, work and visit. Since we moved down to Silicon Valley in 2002, we've been thinking about how we keep one foot in this great city.
Location, location, location. Noe Valley is one of the most amazing neighborhoods in San Francisco. Totally peaceful yet just a few minutes from everything.
Straddling Noe Valley and The Mission, this is a quaint neighborhood location a stone's throw from a slew of restaurants, stores, Whole Foods, etc. Moreover, the nearby Muni and BART stops are a huge deal. With one small child, we found the apartment to be ample size--but more importantly, nearby Dolores Park has an amazing playground. High marks for the kitchen, family room, TV, hot shower and high-functioning heating (SF can be chilly during the winter)
We recently spent 5 nights in this wonderful appartment and couldn't imagine being anywhere else. What a great space! Completely renovated and very clean. Very bright with its big windows, white kitchen and light-coloured walls. The kitchen is truly amazing, wish mine was like this back home. We unfortunately didn't get to use it much as San Francisco is filled with top-rated restaurants and we were on a foodie mission.
The bedroom was perfectly suited to our needs, with a comfortable bed and a good amount of closet space. There was even a noise-reducing device. It's a very quiet neighbourhood but the people who rented below walked heavily and slammed doors pretty loudly so the device did come in handy.
The living room was also a very bright space with comfy furniture, a computer desk and a flat screen TV with Netflix. But you won't need to do much of that: get out there, it's awesome!
I loved the neighbourhood: quiet at night yet very close to great shops, restaurants and all the amenities (including a Whole Foods). Everything you need is on 24th Street, so basically at your door step. A short walk will get you to Valencia St and Mission St, in the heart of the busy Mission district so once again, very close to fabulous restaurants, bakeries and shops. And just walking is a treat as the houses are beautiful and colourful.
The tram is a street corner away so easy transit to anywhere.
My recommendations in the neighbourhood:
- Saru: a tiny Japanese restaurant with the best sushi I have ever had. Ever.
- Bi-Rite Creamery: Decadent ice cream! I had Ricanelas (OMG if you like cinnamon), Brown sugar, basil, honey & lavender.
- Humphry slocombe: funky flavours! I had Horchata, black sesame, Salt & Pepa.
- Pizzeria Delfina: delicious Neapolitan pizza
- Tartine Bakery: very busy but I had a fabulous fruit tart. Not too sweet which is what I like personally.
I warmly recommend this property and would book it in a heartbeat if we came back to San Francisco. Well, WHEN we come back to San Francisco :)
Considered one of the most liveable, walkable neighborhoods in San Francisco, Noe Valley is ideally located near the city centre just a few minutes walk from mass transit. The location has a Walk-able neighborhood rating of 100. The place is loaded with great shops, restaurants. For groceries there is also a Whole Foods nearby as well. To head downtown, you're 3 minutes walk from the J-Church line (street cars) or 5 minutes walk from BART, which also goes directly to SFO.
