LOCATION: This property is 17 miles from Asheville’s city limits, approximately a 20-25 minute drive to the heart of downtown. It is easily accessed via Interstate 26 and Highway 197, with no curvy mountain roads to maneuver. There are also several cab companies that can transport groups to and from downtown.

It is 10 minutes to the charming historic towns of Weaverville and Mars Hill. It’s only a few miles to the Coleman Boundary area of the Pisgah National Forest, 3 miles to Navitat Canopy Adventures (quite possibly the best zipline company in the country), and the French Broad River is nearby: kayaking, rafting, tubing, and fly fishing are offered by several local Outfitters. Bent Creek recreation area in Asheville ranks among the top 10 Mountain Biking sites in the country!

Voted 'Beer City' USA for 4 consecutive years, there is more than the fabulous craft breweries in Asheville. LaZoom Comedy Tours offer family-friendly as well as 'R-rated' adult entertainment, the Blue Ridge Parkway is beautiful any time of year, the Biltmore Estate is the largest privately-owned house in the United States and is open for tours year-round, the Arboretum and Botanical Gardens are lovely, and other recreational options are seemingly endless! Mix in Asheville's cuisine, art, and music... you are not likely to find a quaint vacation destination with so much to offer!

About Paula Taylor

I've been in real estate for what seems my entire life. With parents as Realtors, it's always been a family business. I began appraising in college, investing in rentals at the age of 24, and have been a Property Manager ever since. I fell in love with this house and it's view during my first showing (as a Real Estate Broker)... luckily for me, my clients were not interested! Eight months later, I purchased the home and ~8 acres.

Paula Taylor purchased this house in 2004

Why Paula Taylor chose Asheville

This property and house leave people in awe... from the initial impression coming up the driveway to the expansive living area leading directly to that 'magnet' of a deck... it has the ideal balance of peace, views, and easy access to downtown and other amenities!

It is, undoubtedly, one of the most special properties in the Asheville area! Built in 1986 as a retirement residence with a Swiss Chalet design, there are charming and unique details throughout. The coat closet and pantry lights come on when the doors are opened, skylights and a passive solar design provide a light and bright atmosphere, the ceiling soars to 18' in the Living room, and all rooms of ample size.

The kitchen cabinets were hand-made by the original owner and feature a 'Small Appliance Garage': simply open the door with the brass 'Coffee Maker' label, and pull out the trolley upon which sits the coffee maker! The spice drawer might amuse you, or inspire you... the dumbwaiter is non-functioning, but still fun to check out! How often do you see a modern version of Thomas Jefferson's invention?

Multiple indoor and outdoor 'living areas' make this home an ideal get-away for intimate escapes, family reunions, or for your visitors who prefer a home rather than a hotel.

Spacious and comfortable, there are options to relax in/on the... Den, Living Room, Kitchen with a 'pass-through' to the Dining Room, the Deck, a shady pergola, and 8 acres upon which to roam!

UPDATE: As of October 2013, the Chalet can be rented with (or without) the lower level Recreation Room/laundry area and/or the Efficiency Apartment! The latter has its own kitchen, private bath, bedroom with a Queen, and a Living Area with a Queen sleeper sofa. Ideal for additional guests to have a bit of privacy from those staying on the main level!

What makes this house unique

I've gradually made improvements over the years, most of them cosmetic with a few upgrades to the major systems. Although it is still a 'work in progress', the home is fully functional and comfortable. It has already come a long way and I continue to enjoy the process of converting it into my vision and having the ability to share this special property with guests!

Please see www.vrbo.com/495206 to review additional rental options, as the Chalet on this listing (436612) is available as a 2 BR/1 BA.

Wonderful Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5
We have stayed at the Chalet twice now over the summer. After trying many places during frequent visits to Asheville to see family, this is the best place we've found. It's perfect for us and our two small children. The grounds are beautiful, with a large, several acre long view and gorgeous mountains to gaze upon. The grounds are perfect for easy exploring and running around on the grass. No other neighbors in site, but you're not too alone. There are a couple of houses nearby, and the caretaker is on the opposite hill, couple minute drive away. Plenty of folks along the main road before turning onto the Chalet road. Barnardsville is a quaint spot, nice to be in the country, but minutes from some nice restaurants in Weaverville (Blue Mountain Pizza recommended) and Asheville is 15-20 as other's have written.

The air was super sweet, the milky way stars at night, sound of the crickets, just awesome for us city folk.

The house itself is great too, large large large. In great shape, comfortable bedrooms, bathrooms, well equipped kitchen. We shopped and cooked there most nights. We'd pack lunch and go to Asheville, or waterfall country near Brevard, then head back and grill out for dinner. The deck is super, big and wraps the house.

Nice den with tv for relaxing. Great dining room and living room with huge wall of windows to enjoy view while in comfy reclining chairs, and if home in the peak of the heat on a summer day, the central AC is great.

Laundry is convenient downstairs, ping pong is fun. The jacuzzi was so nice with the view. We set it cooler also (90 degrees) since it was summer and that was perfect.

Also I'd like to mention we have a family member who can't walk great at the moment, but there are no stairs to contend with (just to go down to do laundry) so the enjoyment of the house and grounds is very accessible.

What else can I say? This place is a perfect mountain retreat and we'll return.

Incredible view

What a terrific stay. It's all about the view at the Chalet and it does not dissappoint! The house was clean and well appointed. Photos were accurate. The grounds are sprawling and our kids and dog loved it. The house was very spacious. Next time we come we'll have to bring more family. You could easily host a huge gathering or keep it to an intimate group. Thank you Asheville Chalet.

Valentine's honeymoon

Valentine's honeymoon

This place is awesome! Arrived with 5" of snow on the ground and sledded the big backyard hill all day long. Close enough (15-20min) to Asheville to get to town for fun, but also secluded enough for some nice peaceful relaxation. We really enjoyed it!

Relaxation station:)

  • 5 of 5
Spent the weekend here as a meeting spot with some girlfriends. We really enjoyed the hottub, which was super clean, easy to operate, with a wonderful view. The kitchen was huge with every appliance one could need. We all enjoyed cooking together and eating at the wonderfully large dining table. Couldn't figure out the fireplace and the caretaker, conveniently located on next property, rushed over to help. The owner was easily accessible and very accommodating. I brought my books and studied by the fire. It was such a lovely feeling to be in such a cozy living room and gaze outside at the view of the mountains. When I finally pulled myself from the property, we all drove maybe 20 minutes or so to hike to a waterfall(Douglas Falls Trail).

Great Escape for Humans and Dogs

  • 5 of 5
Great place to get away and decompress. We were referred by our friends who have been a couple times and we had to check it out. Tons of land, beautiful views and great for dogs to explore and play. The house is super dog friendly which is a A++ for us!

Owner and caretaker are extremely responsive and willing to go above and beyond. It is an easy 15-20 minutes to Asheville, if you decide to venture in.

For folks who need Internet... it is WIFI and it is HighSpeed. I can't tell you how many times I have stayed at places and they said it was highspeed and it wasn't or the wifi was horrible.
