About Iwona

Hello , my name is Iwona Szajer and live on Kauai. I am originally from Poland and my husband is from Germany. We call ourselves 'gypsies' as we live in many beautiful places , and yet Kauai is always home. I arrived on Kauai in 1991 and I have made it a home for the girls. They have gone to schools here and they consider this Kauai home.Tatjana , the eldest, lives on Oahu but ultimately wants to be back on Kauai. Ariella in still in school at John Hoppkins and is hoping to one day do good for humankind :-) Daniel , our son has just entered Kindergarten here on the island. We love what Kauai has given us...someone said to us once that moving here has given them an extra 10 years of life...we don't know about that , but what this place has given 'us' is many wonderful memories...we love the life style here...we hope to share some of it with you.

Iwona purchased this townhome in 2012

Why Iwona chose Poipu

We have lived and owned the adjacent unit since 1994. It was always our wish to buy this adjacent unit as it would be perfect for a 'bigger' family. It is perfect for a small family but also if more family comes we can still be together but separate

When I moved for good to Kauai in 1994 I searched for a place that would have a 'blend' of many things. I wanted a great location, a safe place for the girls to be outside, a place where I could enjoy running and hiking. A place that was private and yet where I could meet people. After many visits I found Poipu Crater and it was PERFECT! I truly felt ( and still do ) that this is Poipu's little secret . My friends and neighbors use to say that all the time. So many people in Poipu don't even know that this place exist. Before I bought this cottage, I have lived in few other units and ultimately made the decision to buy the one that I currently own. I made that decision because of the location. My unit is truly in the BEST location. I have the morning sun - I can have my breakfast on the lanai ( it's still not too hot ) and in the afternoon am able to enjoy the outside as well . My unit is perched on top of the Crater and because of its unique location it is comfortable all year round. The morning sun warms it up in the morning , the prevailing trade winds keep it cool all day and I have no or very little mosquito's! It's these small things that one can only find out after truly 'living' in the place and because I had the chance to 'try' other cottages and was lucky to be there at the time when I had choices. I chose this particular one because it is the BEST! I have LIVED there and raised my girls there for 8 years. My husband and I always envisioned ourselves retiring here...but as our family grew we had to find a bigger place. We still have a long ways to retirement , especially now with our 5 year old, but at least we have the knowledge that one day if not us, the girls will be back in 'their' home.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Enjoyed the BBQ area and eating on our lanai. Lush surroundings , lizards on the pathway and tropical birds singing made it a place to remember.

Nice Pleasant Stay

  • 4 of 5

We drove down into the crater depression that's lush with vegetation. We found our home and discovered the door was open to air out a recent fumigation. The place is clean and very comfy. There is an ipod stereo, a tv, and a Blu-ray in the living room. Nice view of the common tennis courtyard. I liked that there were things left from other patrons and owner for us to use, like games and food items. At night, we saw frogs and in the morning there were lizards along the walkways.

We did experience a problem with the circuit breaker going off in the kitchen and upstairs bathroom. We couldn't get that fixed til the next day. Also, the walls are thin and you can hear people next door or near the area. Other than that, it's a beautiful place. I would definitely come back.

Felt at home

  • 5 of 5

The minute we walked in we felt at home. I loved instantly all the shuttered windows, allowing the amazing Kauai trade winds thru. The décor was spot on to my taste. The house had everything we needed with just a short walk to the beach (be prepared for some work with the hills, you are in a crater after all). Our first evening/morning was blissful to wake up to so many birds and not a single rooster. I woke up thinking I was in my own aviary! We didn't pack light or maybe we shopped too much at that point but moving our suitcases in was a fun little exercise getting up to the home...going down was much easier :) I will say I didn't realize it was a duplex of sorts when we rented it - but overall that didn't seem to be an issue - we heard neighbors very little.

We never checked out the pool but who needs to when the beach is blocks away but it did look lovely & clean. Sigh, so sad it had to end. Kauai has our heart and we will be back as soon as we possibly can! Thank you for renting us this beautiful space!!!!

Great Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Since our trip to Kauai was a last minute decision and we were not familiar with the Island, we rented this cottage based only on the excellent reviews. It was clean and comfortable plus stocked with items you hate to have to go out and buy such as laundry detergent, fabric softener, bath soap, plenty of towels including beach towels. There were also beach chairs and toys. Kitchen was updated and well stocked for cooking. It was close to the beaches and very walkable. The one disadvantage we had was that the cottage directly next door with our decks facing each other was occupied by 7 guys that were there to party into the night. The more they drank the louder it got. It was difficult to sit out in the balmy evening and enjoy a nice glass of wine with my sweetie and listen to really gross language. I asked them once to calm it down to no available. Since there is no manager on site we had no way to resolve the issue. The cottage was a great choice though.

Great Alternative to Beach Resort

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time using a VRBO instead of staying at a beach resort and we love it! We were traveling with our young daughter, and having the extra room to spread out and relax was a godsend. And make no mistake, the property was clean, tastefully decorated, and very convenient.

Not much Aloha

  • 4 of 5

This is a well cared for and well-supplied unit. The owners have done their best to accommodate the needs of visitors here. The unit was clean on arrival, the linens are well stocked, and there were many add-ons from previous visitors that made cooking and living very comfortable.

The complex is somewhat dated, but most things are well cared for and it is clean. One of the two barbecues was unusable. The sign directing us our unit was broken off and not visible when we arrived, creating some confusion on our part. There was a broken down truck parked on the driveway, and it never moved while we were there. Regardless of these minor issues, the groundskeepers were very good. The pool was very clean, and a pleasure to use.

We encountered an unhappy few locals in the Poipu Crater complex. I was informed that they felt responsible to continually remind visitors to comply with the rules. These people were quite uncomfortable with some of the children that were around the pool, as they did not like the noise. Although we only rode our bikes in and out of the complex, we were reminded by two people that we could not ride our bikes. Having brought our own bicycles from home, we had made biking a focus for our vacation, and we were disappointed with this attitude. These people generally had negative things to say, and seemed to find it difficult to even say "good day". It was the negative and controlling attitude that conveyed a feeling of resentment toward our presence. Although we were all visitors to this beautiful place, some seemed to take more ownership than others.

Most other people in the community and on the island were positive, welcoming, and happy. They reflected the "Aloha spirit" we have come to know and love about this place.

Wonderful Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We travelled to Kauai for a family vacation and booked the Poipu Crater Condo and my Brother-in-law booked the adjoining unit. The accommodations were perfect for us. Totally kid friendly which is a huge plus. The condo itself is clean and well equipped, as well as the pool area. Kathy was very helpful with recommendations and assistance with babysitter bookings. The whole experience was a treat. Thanks.. we'll be back.
