The newly built Luisa Apartments are situated between the villages of Villa Collemandina and the pretty villlage of Pianacci, with easy walking distance to a small but well-stocked supermarket (La Fontana) but is only 15 minutes drive to the nearest large town of Castelnuovo with all facilities. The stunning backdrop to this property are the Appennine mountain range which form part of the Parco del'Appennino and Orechiella Nature Reserve with its Visitor Centre, Bar & Restaurant, Botanical Garden, Bear Enclosure, Trout Lake and Hiking Trails.

Tips on how to make the most of your holiday:

Eat your main meal at lunchtime!

Even in the bigger cities there are local Trattorie charging around 10 euros (£9) for a three-couse lunch including wine and coffee (pranzo di lavoro). Or why not pack a picnic and try the range of breads, cheeses and cured meats available locally and spend the day exploring the Orecchiella National Park & Nature Reserve (30 minutes by car) driving through stunning scenery with breath-taking mountain views.

Drink at the cafe counter!

Coffee and soft drinks taken standing up at the counter instead of at a table with waiter service are half the cost.

Train travel is still extremely good value. There are excellent connections from the local town of Castelnuovo to nearby Lucca, Pisa, Florence or the Cinque Terre on the coast (around 9 euro return per person via La Spezia).

Excellent Tuscan wine is available from a local wine merchant at great value for money. Why not buy for the duration of your holiday and if travelling without restrictions, buy a case or two to take home.

The Tuscan Climate: In general the climate in Tuscany is very mild with little variation between the different provinces. However the coast and valleys are3 or 4 degrees hotter in summer than the hilly areas. Usually summers in Tuscany are hot with little or no rain. April and May are milder and rainier but there are still plenty of dry, sunny days. July and August are the hottest months. September and October are usually warm during the day but cooler in the evenings.

Spring can be one of the most rewarding times to visit, average temperatures are warm and comfortable. It can however be one of the wettest seasons but normally by May rain is rare and the days are longer with up to 10 hours of daylight.

Summer in Tuscany is usually hot and sunny with pleasant evenings for 'al fresco' dining. Humidity levels can get high, especially in the cities.

The Local Area: Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is a typical bustling Italian town that is important for local farming and agriculture and famous for local produce including pecorino cheese, farro (barley), porcini mushrooms and polenta (ground maize) and is located at a height of approx. 300m above sea level.

The town is well served by supermarkets, small specialty food shops, restaurants and bars. There is a busy market on Thursday mornings 8am – 1pm which sells clothes, flowers, pottery, hardware, carpets, shoes, leather goods and gifts and also has a separate fruit and vegetable section. It’s best to go early for the atmosphere.

The local clothes and shoe shops can also offer some great bargains. Shops close generally between 1 pm and 4 pm and are open until around 7pm. Trains from Castelnuovo station go regularly to Lucca where there are connections to Florence, Pisa and onwards. There is also a bus station in the centre of town which connects to most of the villages and towns in the area.

Inside this newly converted first floor apartment there are two bedrooms both with en-suite shower rooms sleeping up to a maximum of 8 people + cot (one with a double bed, bunk-beds and balcony and one with a king-size bed, bunk-beds and a view of the pool). Large well equipped separate kitchen with door to garden and Pizza Oven. French doors from large and spacious dining area lead to a private shaded terraza with tables/chairs for al-fresco dining. The newly built swimming pool with fountain feature can be reached via a small flight of stone steps with stunning scenery beyond. Large and spacious gardens with play area. Ample parking.

The garden is spacious and well kept and the pool is cleaned and maintained daily (in the early morning to avoid disturbing guests).

Although the Luisa Apartments are in a quiet and rural position enjoying 360 degree views of breathtaking scenery, the popular village of Castiglione di Garfagnana is only a 10 minute drive away (or 40 minute walk) where you can sit and watch the world go by at one of the three bars - ideal for enjoying a cappuccino and getting to know the friendly local people. The busy town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is only a 15 minute drive away and has plenty of shops, restaurants and bars to experience, whether it's a morning coffee, a light lunch, an aperitivo or an evening meal.

Owner's Response: The Luisa Apartments are the perfect holiday destination for families. The newly built pool has a waterfall feature with amazing views of the surrounding countryside and moutains beyond. The surrounding gardens are spacious and perfect for children to play in a safe environment.

Although situated in a quiet and rural location, the nearest village is only a 10 minute walk away where the well stocked supermarket 'La Fontana' has fresh bread delivered daily as well as a deli counter providing a good selection of local meats and cheeses - perfect for a picnic by the pool, or for those wishing to explore the local area, why not visit the nearby Parco dell'Orecchiella, which is approx. a 30 minute drive through areas of outstanding natural beauty with breathtaking views along the way.

The park consists of imposing forests of beech, chestnut and fir trees still populated by many species of wild animals such as the Apennine wolf, deer, mouflon and wild boar. The skies are dominated by birds of prey such as hawks and eagles. In addition visitors can enjoy watching the family of brown bears from the various viewing platforms, take a stroll around the Visitor Centre and sample some locally made produce from the organic shop.

The Park occupies a large area with paths that have different levels of difficulty. We suggest an itinerary enjoyed by all and especially interesting for children. Upon reaching the Visitor Centre, where maps are available, follow the path that leads to the "garden of mountain flowers". Through a small forest of pines are where the brown bears are housed. The trail ends back at the Visitor Centre.

The beaches of Viareggio, Forte dei Marmi and Massa di Carrara are all just under an hour away, with Lucca, Florence, Pisa, La Spezia and the Cinque Terre all within easy reach.

Luisa Apartment is a very pleasant apartment accommodating 8 people. As it used to be a small restaurant, it has a very large kitchen and the sitting room is spacious. A wonderful pool is at your disposal with a grand view over the surrounding area.

Owner's Response: The Luisa Apartment 3 on the first floor (or on the ground floor looking from the front as the property is built on an incline) is ideal for families as it has two double bedrooms with a double bed and bunk-beds in each room, both with en-suite facilities and has a large and airy lounge/dining area (with TV, DVD's, Games Console & Games), with a separate well-equipped kitchen. It also has a large shaded corner terrazza for outside dining as well as spacious grounds. In addition there is ample car parking right next to the apartments.
There is a brand new washing machine which is housed in a small 'cabina' on the ground floor for guests use along with pool towels, airers, iron, ironing board, cleaning materials etc.
The swimming pool is cleaned and water quality checked every day by Claudio, the Italian owner.
The Luisa Apartments are situated in a quiet and peaceful location but the nearest supermarket 'La Fontana' is only a 10 minute walk away in Villa Collemanda - which is well stocked and ideal for buying daily bread etc. The large town of Castelnuovo is 15 minutes by car.
The welcoming Italian owners, Monica & Claudio, want you to have an enjoyable and pleasant stay, so if there is anything that you have forgotten or that they can provide, please ask and they will do their best to provide it e.g. extra towels, pillows, kitchen equipment etc. The Apartments are spotlessly clean and well presented and there are no extra charges to the published rates.
Many families book again for the following year as they find there is not enough time to explore this beautiful area. The comprehensive House Book gives plenty of information about things to do and places to visit.
In addition, we can be completely flexible on arrival and departure dates / times e.g. if guests are not arriving or departing the same day, you can arrive or leave at a convenient time which fits in with your travel plans.
We also offer competitive prices - and the rates are based per apartment and not on the number of occupying guests so a large family can benefit from an 'excellent value for money' holiday.
You will be assured of a warm welcome at the Luisa Apartments.

Luisa Apartment 3 - two bedrooms - in Pianacci

Although the view, pool and outside entertainment areas are delightful there were many disappointing factors to this rental.
We were surprised to find that although we were only three, the extra beds had not been removed from either of the bedrooms. The authorisation from the Region of Tuscany specifies the accommodation is suitable for six persons but in an attempt to crowd in eight beds, one bedroom was left with no wardrobe at all and clothes had to be draped over the bunk beds. A week later the owner provided us with a mobile hanging rail of the type used by porters in hotels. The photos on the web site show the bedrooms without the extra beds and appear much larger than they are. One bedroom is very dark.
Both bathrooms were without toilet roll holders, towel rails or hooks although they were finally installed after our complaints. The industrial sized toilet rolls were left on high-up windows, out of reach.
The accommodation is an obviously "converted" pizzeria and gives the impression that although the owners may be absent they are likely to restart the activity from one moment to the next. The sitting area, which was previously the dining room, has seating for about 24 people with many tables and chairs and an old TV up at ceiling level, but very little "homely" comfort. The kitchen is enormous and could easily contain a washing machine (see below). The bedrooms are small in comparison to the huge dining area which also extends to the outside.
We used the communal washing machine only once (it is in the outside shed/ toilet). It does not spin and requires the strength of a weight-lifter to close and get started.
Nothing has been removed from the business side to make it a more welcoming rental home.
Any activities, attractions or restaurants all require travel as the property is in quite a remote location.

Owner's Response: We greatly appreciate guests taking the time to provide feedback and welcome their views to help us improve the accommodation we provide, however although some of the points mentioned above are fair, some details are inaccurate. The property information is detailed, accurate and clearly states what is provided. We were unaware that the washing machine was not in full working order and this will be rectified. The apartment was converted into a property rental in 2010 and the owner has no intention of reverting it back into a restaurant. The property is located in a rural area between the villages of Villa Collemandina and Pianacci with stunning 360 degree views which adds to its beauty and tranquility. The nearest restaurants are a mere 10 minute drive away in nearby Castiglione, a picturesque 13th century hilltop village steeped in history with panoramic views of the local area and popular with visitors. Castelnuovo, the nearest large town with all amenities, is only 15 minutes away by car. The Luisa Apartments are fairly priced and are mainly aimed at families with children. This is the first negative review we have received and many guests happily return year after year.

Throughout the summer months there are daily 'festas' held in the many small villages in the area with speciality food and drink e.g. Traditional Tuscan specialities ranging from trout, steak, pasta, cheese, funghi (mushrooms) and a German Beer Festival all with dancing to music. Here and at many other festas you can eat and drink to your heart's content for a minimal amount. A truly memorable way to experience the real heart of Tuscany and its friendly people and cultures.

Tennis courts (10 minute walk in Villa collemandina), a 9-hole golf course (10 minute drive in Bosco), pony trekking (in nearby Castiglione) and daily hiking excursions can be organised locally to explore the many surrounding mountain villages against a backdrop of stunning scenery.

The small ski resort of San Pellegrino and the Parco del Orecciella Nature Reserve with its Visitor Centre, Bar & Restaurant, Bear Enclosure, Botanic Garden and Hiking Trails are only a 30 minute drive away with the coast and upmarket beach resort of Forte dei Marmi just 30 km away.

Lucca, Pisa, Florence and The Cinque Terre are all within easy reach.

Golf: There is a pretty little 9-hole golf course situated nearby in Bosco.

The separate kitchen is extremely large and well-equipped and includes a fridge/freezer, oven with four ring gas hob, sink/drainer with cupboards above and below and microwave. The dining area is also extremely large and spacious with ample seating. There is also a wooden dresser with plenty of china and cutlery. Both bedrooms have en-suite faciliites with clean and spacious shower rooms. Bedroom 1 has a balcony and Bedroom 2 has a pool and garden view. There are French doors leading from the dining area to the large private corner shaded terrace for al-fresco dining. A small flight of stone steps leads down to the pool (cleaned daily) with waterfall feature with deck chairs, sunbeds and parasols and surrounding garden. To the side there is also a large lawned area with swings and a play area for children. Outside there is a small storage area (cabina) housing the washing machine, iron/ironing board, airer and cleaning materials etc. Ample parking.
