About Wendy Southern

Wendy and Joel Southern welcome visitors who want to feel at home in a distinguished, yet cozy cottage in a beautiful, natural setting. Creekwood is our family cabin, and we take great enjoyment in sharing this magical place with others who appreciate the natural world. We hope that you connect with the creek, the mountain hollow, and the woodland inhabitants as much as we do.

Wendy Southern purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Wendy Southern chose Townsend

Joel's parents owned and managed several cabins in Townsend, including Creekwood, from the 1970s through 2005. He grew up hiking in the Smokies every chance he could get. While Townsend has grown up a bit since those days, we are pleased that it has remained the 'Peaceful Side of the Smokies'. We love the small town feel of Townsend, the locally owned restaurants and shops. Our family enjoys biking, hiking, and swimming in the Little River when we visit. It's just a great place for a family getaway.

What makes this cabin unique

As soon as you cross the footbridge over the creek, all the day-to-day worries are washed away. The gentle flow of the creek is the focus here. Creekwood Cabin is just the place to reconnect with the pace of nature and a finer appreciation for the simple joys in life. Come, rejuvenate your spirit amid the energy and beauty of the Smoky Mountains.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for a lovely stay. We adored your storybook-like cabin.

We had never been to this side of the Smokies. We really enjoyed all the local artisans, Cades Cove loop, The Caverns and since there's been so much rain, the waterfalls in the park were beautiful.

Being able to hear the creek from the cabin was the highlight of our time. The house is unique, with beautiful stone work and wonderful outdoor space to relax.

Quality time with the Family and 40th Birthday Celebration

  • 5 of 5
We had a fabulous time at the cabin! We loved the creek flowing outside our window and the privacy of the setting. It was close to town and where we like to visit (birthday boy's favorite place to be). The cabin was clean and the kids loved their special room. Thank you for the nice vacation!

Excellent getaway.

  • 5 of 5
Creekwood cabin is the perfect place to get away. Lots of nature all around cabin. The creek runs right below the cabin windows, the sound is so peaceful. Everything is here when you arrive, except food and personal items. There is so much to do here at Townsend or quick drive to pigeon forge. Our best time was just sitting in gazebo reading or drinking a cup of coffee. We will definitely come back again.

Great great place!

  • 5 of 5
I thought this cabin was amazing. Perfect home-base for exploring the National Park and other sites in Townsend. I would estimate this cabin would built in the 50s or 60s, but it is wonderfully maintained. It has a lot of character including real stone steps, real wood paneling, modern appliances, fireplace with lots of wood provided, gazebo, steps to the stream right beside the cabin. It is a quiet area. The home is rustically decorated, but not cluttered up. I thought decorations and accessories were just perfect, in number, in time period and in uniqueness. Lots of board games, toys, and video games for all to enjoy. Great communication with the owner. Would I stay there again? Absolutely! I thought it was a very unique, very nice and very restful place.

Wonderful home-base for family gathering.

  • 4 of 5
My family of 4 met my father here for a vacation. We were ages 73, 44, 43, 8, and 6. We loved having a comfortable "home base" for meals and hanging out although we often did our own thing through the day. The inside has comfortable spaces for watching television, preparing meals, and dining, the kids' room had drawers full of blocks, games, books, etc. (not to mention a couch, table and chairs) for kids to enjoy with some privacy, our bed was large and comfortable, and my dad enjoyed the privacy of the lower level with a comfortable pull-out bed (NOT one of those awful ones, but a comfortable memory foam(?) model), his own sink, toilet, and television, along with the private entrance and covered patio with the shallow creek running alongside one wall of the patio. A dehumidifier on the lower level made that space dry and fresh. Very relaxing.
The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is only because of the stone stairs inside. This original home has been nicely remodeled without sacrificing the original home's charm. However, the home's original charm included kind of a wonky layout (pass through the main bedroom to access the kids room) and - I can't be clear enough about this - steep stone stairs. Not really really steep, but not the standard stair riser-to-tread ratio that we're used to these days. I was concerned for my 72 year old father, especially going down the stairs, but he's a trooper and did just fine.
I would definitely return for the price, convenient location, and charm, but I'd forewarn people in the group about the stairs before booking.

Great place to stay for a family

  • 5 of 5
This house was cozy. Initially, it was a bit more compact and older than I expected from photos but we settled in quickly and really enjoyed all it had to offer. My husband and I came with our two 5-year-old girls and my mother-in-law, and the house worked perfectly for us. There was a kids room off the main bedroom, with different toys and my girls delighted in exploring this. Outside, there is a wonderful creek and we spent several hours hunting for salamanders and lobster-like creatures, as well as roasting marshmallows for s'mores. The cabin is within an easy drive of Cades Cove and Gatlinburg so there were opportunities to sightsee but it was just as easy to "stay home" for a day, relax and enjoy the quiet of the outdoors. The only challenge we experienced is that the cabin has all glassware for both eating and drinking so we headed to the local grocery store for paper plates and plastic cups because I didn't want to risk my girls breaking anything. If you are coming to the cabin by car and have young children, you might want to pack some of your plastic plates and cups for them to use.
